Field Dressing tools for deer

Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 04:18 AM

I have one of these but haven't tried it yet:

I'm looking to buy the gut hook tool-- if anybody knows where I can get the gut hook tool, let me know. I've seen some where it's a combo pack, with the Butt Out tool included, but I already have the Butt Out tool.

All I use is a knife and a hatchet to split the pelvis.

I wonder if a hooked utility knife blade could be your guthook tool?

That's what I use.

Waste of time and money. They work, but not needed. Kind of a gimmik.

These actually work pretty good for animals with thicker hides like moose. For Deer not really necessary, just a nice sharp knife and your opening cut is done in a few seconds.

I don't even take the butt out of a deer. I process my deer and most times they're deboned within a few hours of the kill.

I just used the leatherman Sidekick I always have in my pocket. The saw worked great on the pelvis.

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 01:29 PM

I don't like a knife with a gut hook. I tried one that a friend bought for me. It was always getting caught on stuff while I was up in the cavity detaching organs. I went back to my regular, non-gut hook knife after that.

For opening the abdomen, a very sharp knife run blade up just under the skin from pelvis to sternum then passed lightly over the belly skin blade down works great.

I tried the Butt-Out tool once, wasn't impressed. I just cut around the anus between the colon and pelvic bone and detach the colon before pulling everything out. I don't split the pelvis in the field, I do it with a bone saw when processing.

A knife is all I use I don't split the pelvis either and I try to leave as much hide on the deer as possible to keep the meat as clean as I can if I have to drag it out .
A lot of those kits aren't needed when the rut is on I'll use one knife to remove the glands on the hind legs and then put it away and use a different knife to finish field dressing the animal .

Outdoor Edge Swing Blade is great for gutting deer. Gutted many with a standard drop point knife. Just run your finger on the bottom edge of the point up over the guts so it doesn’t catch anything. An old hammer to split the pelvis, couple light taps on the back of knife it slices right through. Spreads those hams nicely for quick cooling when the pelvis is split. Nice clean, easy peasy.

All you need to dress a deer is a sharp pocket knife, 4 minutes and you better not be bloody past the wrists! smile

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 02:39 PM

I normally use my edc pocket knife. I had a knife or two with a gut hook and they worked well just like a tail zipper. But my pocket knife is always in my pocket and I'm not fond of packing extra gear not needed. Getting the butt cut out used to give me problems but no longer. Take your time and be sure it's all cut free and it will pull right through when you pull out the intestines.

As to the guys that say there is no point to splitting the pelvis I disagree. Early seasion when it's 75° and it's been an hour since your shot or more before you find the deer and can get it drug out if your in deep at a walk in only area and still have an our plus drive home. I split the pelvis and the rib cage all the way. I believe it helps it cool down faster. I stop and pack it full of ice at the first gas station I come to as well if I didn't pack a cooler of ice for the purpose.

Now when it's cold out 100% not necessarily. May not be necessarily when it's warm but makes me feel like I'm smart and doing all I can to cool it down fast.

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 02:52 PM

When I do a hog or a beef I cut around the anus inserting the blade in deep. The animal is hanging up by the back legs. You need get a hold of it before you get it loose. Cut it loose leaving the colon intact and unpunctured. Pull it up out the animal a few inches and tightly tie some good cord around the colon or gut. No more worries about feces in the meat. Deer and elk produce pellets. I dont bother tying them off. When opening up the abdomen I make a V, the old peace sign, and put my fingers in. use my fingers to keep the gut pushed away and my knife held in the other hand with the blade between those fingers. A pocket knife works great. you can do deer on the ground that way and never cut the guts or stomach with your pocket knife.

The only tool you will ever need to gut a deer.

Heck no! I think I could do a better job with a chainsaw.

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 03:52 PM

Yes a chainsaw would be cleaner. Fellow thinks busting the guts is a ok and didn't remove the butt so cut that and probably busted the baldder.

I'm sure my 10 year old can do a better job by himself with a pocket knife

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 04:02 PM

I've done a big heap of them with just a knife, If your splitting the pelvis a hatchet is handy on older deer.

But I only do a gutless field dress now, Opening skinning cuts with a hooked utility blade, it's like having a zipper on the deer, lol

Deer is hoisted up, or not, and skinned and boned out with any knife you got, I use Mora's now but once skinned and boned one with a tiny 1 3/4" folder. Meat goes in game bags and pack bag and walked off the mountain.

When I used to gut I didn't split the pelvis or ribs if I was dragging it out, helps keep everything cleaner.

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 04:19 PM

I only use a pocket knife w a 2.5" blade.. my first cut is around the anus and colon, then I can split the chest all the way up. Use my finger as a guide split the belly all the way down to the hip. I don't split the pelvis this keeps everything clean and no waste. I skin as soon as I get home then they hang in my walk in cooler about a week. I then sue that same pocket knife to completely debonair the deer. You do not need any kind of saw you can take any deer apart at the joints no sawing ever
A simple pocket knife is the Only tool needed!!

What ark trapper said is correct. I like a little larger knife but you don't need anything else. Of course some people will complicate making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Simple is best, hunter orange, a good rifle or bow, and a sharp knife, maybe a hatchet. Anything else is just extra weight.

Just a knife for me other than paper towels and water to semi-clean my hands when done.

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/20/22 11:51 PM

The Butt Out tool is indispensable for me. A high quality knife with a gut hook blade is too.
The key to using a gut hook knife is to cut crossways at the sternum just upstream of the belly so that you can avoid instantly busting the guts.
Starting at the sternum and heading towards the vent will help keep the gut hook from clogging with hair.
Also when you start with the gut hook, make sure to get deep enough while still at the sternum to get into meat. A gut hook works best if it cuts the thin belly muscle at the same time as it cuts the hide. Learn how to sharpen that guthook. You will need to to make life easier.
I can completely field dress a deer in 90 seconds. I have had lots of experience. Enough to make a preacher to call me a liar if I told you how many.

It's still good for a laugh now and then.

I clicked on the link to see what it was

Then I started reading details

Product is not able to be shipped to CA laugh
Guess those dummies don't know the difference in devices out there laugh

I have no need for that tool or a guthook knife but I can see where some might find them useful.

A lot of times now I will use the gutless method. Have to be able to recover and skin the deer quickly, remove straps, neck meat and shoulders, make a cut just in front of the hams and get the tenderloins out, remove hindquarters and dump the rest in the bone pile for the critters. There is not enough meat on the ribs of our deer to bother with them. Midwest deer are a different story

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/21/22 01:37 AM

I hunt private ground, and can always get my quad to where the deer lies. I often skin them out in the woods. I use a 20 foot rope and a shiv wheel, that I attach up in a tree with a 1/4 “ chain. I attach rope to hind leg of deer, and then to the quad, and lift it off the ground. I skin with a Havalon knife, and then open the body cavity with a Gerber gut hook. I carry this hack saw with me on quad, has hack saw blade and a wood cutting blade. I use the hack saw blade to split pelvis, cut off legs and neck. I have 42 gallon bags on quad, cut deer in two pieces, bag and load up.

I never figured out why some people gutted deer while hanging? Makes it way more trouble and work for me with the guts trying to come out while your getting into the chest cavity.

Maybe I was just doing it wrong?

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/21/22 02:00 AM

If you case skin it and quit at the ears then cut the head off, you can use the hide as a bag to hold the guts Providence Farm. With deer and elk I think its easier to just gut them where they lay. Only takes a few minutes and I think you get better meat than taking time to haul it home and hang it up.

Did you hang em by the head or hind in legs. From the head it's easy.

Re: Field Dressing tools for deer - 11/21/22 12:48 PM

Hanging by the hind legs for gutless method, keep on the ground if I am field dressing.

If I can get ATV to them I am not gutting unless required (public land hunt where they weigh and take data they want them gutted with exception of a few late season doe hunts where they are looking for fetus info)
