7x57 for deer

What's everyone using for bullets in their 7mm Mausers?

Was lucky enough to smack a couple decent ones with mine this year and while both were dead when I tripped the trigger and just didn't know it, they ran 30-40 yards. I'm colorblind so blood tracking isn't my favorite.

My 30-06 usually plants them with my standard bullet placement, but I was a little hesitant to drill the shoulder with the 7x57 with the factory stuff I was shooting.

Was using 140 gr Corelokts this year, but I can handload whatever.

Plan as of now is to load some Partitions or Accubonds for next year and put the bullet where I normally would.

I see a lot of talk of guys using the heavier bullets in the 7x57. I don't shoot long range, but 200 yds isn't out of the question.

I love 140 Partitions in 7x57. One thing I will say is that with a 7x57 and 6.5 Swede is that they always run but not very far. 50 yards tops if hit correctly. Even if you can't see the blood due to being colorblind making circles for 50 yards looking isn't a big deal.

My ruger liked hornady 139 and 154 spire points over 4064 my thoughts were a good bullet in that weight range was all that was needed

Congrats! I knew I should have kept that one but I need to thin the herd. The model 70 collection is going to get thinned this week too.

I have a 7x57 in a rem. mountain rifle and the Deer I've shot with it all staggered about 20-30yds too. Nature of the beast I figured.

Nothing wrong with what you’re already using if it shoots well in your gun. I don’t know that a bonded bullet will change where the deer will drop. A 140 gr. cup $ core bullet in 7mm will kill most if not all deer shot with it. Shot placement is often times a determining factor. But a well placed bullet in the “boiler room” will not need much tracking regardless of what your are using for a bullet or rifle. My .03. Lol. I will post a pic of a large SD buck that made it twenty yards after a single shot from a 55 gr. soft point out of a 22-250. If I can figure out how to post pics that is.

Accubonds or Partitions will work great at the ranges you are shooting, but so will Corlokts. Those old Remington Cor-lokts aren't a high bc long range bullet, but they will perform great on game, expand reliably and I've never, ever seen one blow up and fail to penetrate like I have seen out of so many of the hyped up hunting bullets. If you were to tell me you were wanting to front shoulder something my first recommendation for a bullet would be a Grand Slam, closely followed by either a Cor-lokt or a Partition, and Accubond would be right up and probably top the list if you were looking for possibility of a little longer range accuracy. Of course there are many others that would perform great, but that would be the first that come to mind, mainly because I've used the first three extensively and the Accubonds I just got to try loading in the wife's gun.

I'm a fan of the Hornady 139 gr inter lock bullets in my .7 mm Remington mag loads and my .284 Winchester the 7 x 57 is a fantastic cartridge that is equal to the others mentioned and will treat you right as long as you do your part .

I ended up with quite a collection of loaded ammo for the 7 x 57 while at a auction so I've been looking for a rifle to shoot it with possibly to give to one of my grandkids some day .

We have killed about 40 deer with the same bullet out of a 7mm08. Does very well even shot through the shoulder.

Edit. Apparently they work for opossum a well my 12 year old just informed me. A bit let down I was ready to hear how nice a buck he got after letting so many walk. Guess nest predators don't even get a pass when deer hunting.

Apparently now ita s opossum hunt. That makes 2. He will be out of bullets when a nice buck walks in.

I shoot a 6mm Rem and used to shoot 100gr Partitions but now I use 90 gr Accubonds as they shoot better in my gun. Haven't had to use more than one shot. Great bullets.

I don't have any experience with the 7X57 per se but I do load a 150 grain Remington Corelokt bullet to 7x57 velocities out of my 7mm Remington Magnum for when I am hunting closer areas but also around fields. The loads 100 yard zero matches with my long range load which is a 140 grain Sierra Gameking SBT, 300 yard zero. I have shot several deer with the 150 grain load and they have either been a boom flop or only took a few steps, I have never had one leave my sight when shot with that load. Every deer I have shot with that load has been a complete pass through with a significant exit wound so if I did have to blood trail, there should be plenty of blood to follow.

Just as good as a 7mm-08, which is a great deer round for me.
