Elk scraps for marten bait - 11/22/22 09:34 PM

Does anyone know if this would work for marten bait? I read somewhere that it doesn’t have the fat content and marten don’t like it but I have a lot and would love to use it for bait

Betcha if a marten came across a dead elk he'd gorge himself.

Being opportunistic hunters and SCAVENGERS marten and fisher both will respond to most any bait or lure. If they are in the general locality when you set, they will find it. I have no elk here but both deer and moose scraps work great.

That's interesting, in southeast Alaska I have had terrible luck with deer scraps for bait, even beaver isn't the best. However, the marten go nuts for duck and grouse scraps. You know the old saying; "move a hundred miles and you have to learn how to trap al over again".

Check the regs , I believe it's unlawful to use any parts of a Game bird , Game fish , or Game animal for trapping bait in Oregon

It is definitely illegal in Oregon to use any part of a game animal for bait. Go with beaver or muskrat and maybe some castor and fish oil for scent. Beef liver can also fill the bill as far a bait goes.

Weird laws in some places.
One time a Game Warden buddy of mine dropped off a pick up truck load of moosehides for me to use as wolf bait.

So if Birds, fish and game are illegal do you use lettuce or carrot's for bait?

Yes, also raspberry jam if sourced locally and certified organic.

The key word is "Game " .... anything the odfw deems a game animal

Common law in western states. Idaho just changed theirs so you can use roadkilled game animals, etc. for bait. Still can't use edible portions of game animals unless they are roadkill. Furbearers are not considered game animals, so anything from a furbearer, nongame animal or domestic is good.

As of March of this year they changed it so that you can use nonedible portions of game animals as bait. The edible portions you are required to salvage are described in the regs.
I'm not sure how they would describe scraps from butchering the edible portions of a game animal; probably would depend on the officer whether he considered those scraps edible or not.

I've always thought that some old laying hens all chopped up would make great marten bait. That would be legal in Oregon. Just tell the game warden you think might be spotted owl you're using for marten bait (not a game bird). That will cause him to send off samples to wildlife forensics lab in Ashland. I think that would be a good harmless prank to waste their time with.

Thanks for the info, I had forgotten about not using parts of game animals. I was able to get a hind quarter off of a beef cow that died so hopefully that will do the trick for bait.

X2. I rarely use anything but feathers for marten. Depending on what type of set you are using all you really need is some movement and eye appeal. Tie up a bunch of chicken feathers and put some scent on them. Suspend them above your trap and let the wind provide the movement
