Unexplained things happen, and will happen to everyone eventually if you hunt long enough...I've had my share of, "what the heck just happened? " crazy

I am one of the worst off-hand shots this side of the Mississippi, don’t get yourself down. Go do a little target practice with the gun and get your confidence back.

I missed one this year as well with my shotgun. Total chip shot at 50 yards. Never missed one in the past with this gun, either. I'm still scratching my head as to how. We all get humbled I guess.

I think I'd rather miss one than ever wound it and never recover it.

Bummer you didn't get your deer but would rather have a clean miss than a questionable hit.

After hearing what your wife said about a new gun makes one wonder if that was an intentional miss. wink grin

Done that! Don't be too hard on yourself Roy, I have missed them when they were so close I nearly had to back up to shoulder the rifle! Even at close range there is a pile of space surrounding them.

do you often take neck shots?

by neck do you try for near the head or near the shoulder?

the neck shot near the shoulder is a lot more forgiving

Re: can't say never - 11/24/22 05:38 AM

I have shot two in the neck as all I had is a head shot. I shot both times right for the white patch on the throat. One was say 80-90 yards the other about 40 yards both in the woods with lots of brush and cover.
Both with open sights with my 300 Savage right after coming out of service when I could still shoot pretty good.
