Anyone mess with .300wsm ? - 11/24/22 01:37 AM

So got a buddy with a nice one and hes offering to pay for the components if I'll reload for him. Said I can keep the rifle for as long as I need, so seem like a good deal to me. I have a hand full of folk who I do it for from time to time . Just wondering though if anyone hear mess with it any ? Apparently alot of bench rest guys like it. Easy to "tune" alot of them say.
Anyway for y'all who mess with it any particularities this cartridge has that just stand out ? Strange Enough can't find a ton on the YouTube about it

One of the things that I noticed when reloading for it was that you need to set your sizing die while resizing them. I needed to have the shell plate touching the die when sizing the cases. If not it was hard to close the bolt and extraction was difficult, even on starting loads. Another is that they like 180 SBT tips. This was with two rifles. The ballistics show it has some good potential.

When I get home I’ll post the load we use. I know it’s a 180 Barnes

I have a 300 wsm I bought when they first came out. Mine is a mod 70 Win. Put a Jewell trigger in it. Went on two elk hunts and killed a large Montana whitetail. Too much gun for NC. Hasn’t seen daylight in over ten years.

Got a fortune in the scope and Jewell trigger, plus gunsmith fees. My 7 Rem Mag doesn’t come out to play either. Neither did my heavy barrel 280AI that I eventually sold.

Mostly hunt with 25-06, 7mm-08, 270, and occasionally a 280 Mountain and a 308 Model 7. No more magnums for me. Considering a 22-250. Had four shoulder surgeries. I am a wussy now at 76.

Do you have a specific question regarding the round? I loaded 180 for elk and 150 for deer.

They work well, fairly popular out west, short action for a shorter bolt throw, but you usually sacrifice one round in the magazine for that short action. The hype with the short mags when they came out was that they were inherently more accurate than the regular long action magnums, more efficient, and less recoil. More efficient maybe, but I don't really buy the other two. Too much depends on other factors for that, and I believe they were often enough chambered in newer guns that were designed for better accuracy and less felt recoil than some of the older magnum rifles, but I've shot some short mags that kicked like a mule, and others that didn't hardly kick at all.

I'd look at loading 180s in it, if it has room in the magazine for longer OAL and the twist to stabilize them you can play with some of the long, heavy, low drag bullets designed for long range. I know a few guys that shoot 210 Bergers in them with great results, but not all guns will stabilize them, and some of them guys can only load one in the chamber and one in the magazine because they are too long to fit down in the magazine.

I had a model 70. Put a sour taste in my mouth for Winchester. I sold it and a 300 rum that ripped my shoulder apart and kept a 30-378 weatherby. One of those guns that's so accurate you shoot straight up to see if it it falls back in the barrel

Reloading for another person is a liability issue.
If his gun blows up, he's comin for you.
Don't do it.

Been thinking about nicking one up to 358 for our stupid public land regs. Thinking I read people doing so can get 2900fps.

Great round. I like using a muzzle brake it can reduce recoil by almost 50 percent.

It is a (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) cat with a tiger's bite! I used to load 165 gr Spitzer boatail for it but got to thinking 180 yr was more like the reason I bought it. Never noticed much more recoil in it than the 270 or 30-06

If your chamber and dies are not matched, shoulder bump can vary. Bump it until it chambers easy.

H4831SC and IMR7828SSC are two you should look at. The 4831SC being the preferred of those two

Some rifles do not to chamber it well,,, push feed issues back in the day when I had it in a Christensen rifle years ago, everyone says they got it fixed.
