Another Odd Question - 11/26/22 08:27 PM

This morning we had fog here. Somebody shot where the timber had been cleared behind our property. We watched the fog come through the wood to us. When it engulfed us my wife said she smelled gunpowder. Is that really possible or is she messing with me?

Moisture enhances smell. The breeze just carried it and the fog to you.

I have smelled cigarette smoke which traveled several yards from a smoker to me .

I'd say it is possible, HT. I love the smell of gunpowdah....

Thank you Ms. Sharon.

I love the smell too but I require a larger dose and a close distance to smell it. lol

Although I’m left handed I always shoot the right hand shotgun at the range so I get a good whiff when that ejected shell passes by.

Sharon nailed it plus females have better noses than us guys. I'm sure Sharon is not one to brag.

Warrior, the thought never entered my mind, all I thought of, was remembering I've experienced that myself on occasion. smile

And yes, HT, I love the smell of gunpowdah shooting trap and other games with a line of shot gunners.

If people can smell something like that at that distance how in the world does a K9 make up its mind where to go?

I think it’s what you’re used to smelling. We’ve smelled deer, hogs, gun powder, skunk, etc…we know what we are smelling.
Other folks probably smell it but just don’t know what they’re smelling.
I hunt hogs at night by smell after my camera lets me know they are there. Just keep that scent in your face and you’re good.
I’m with others, I’ve smelled cigarette smoke from a long ways away.
I’ve found dead deer by just walking a zigzag pattern with the wind in my face until I eventually nail it down.
I’ve smelled rattlesnakes long before they let me know I was close.
With a fog, it’s almost like a sensory overload with odors. They just carry thick and for a distance.
