Yes, downed log, limb etc. Also a toothpick and in a pinch, a pig castrator. grin

It is that spiky thing that is on the ring of a trap chain.
It is that thing that young trappers pound into a tree with their hatchet.
It makes them so proud that they have their trap solidly anchored.

Then the next day they are really cranked up when they find out they cannot
pull it out with their hatchet, they are wondering why they pounded it in that far.

My dad was a coal miner and he called those spads. Said they used them like nails, hammered them into the rock to hang curtain to control air flow and anything else they might have needed to hang up.

I used it in between the jaws when dying and waxing back in the day and as a wedge between a hardwood stake and the trap chain ring for staking.
