New truck. Prices coming down or staying outrageou - 11/29/22 01:43 AM

I'm in the market for a new ram 3500 Laramie crew cab long box 4x4 with the cummins diesel. My salesman is supposed to get back to me with price but I'm gonna figure she'll be north of $100 000 canadian pesos. What are you guys seeing south. Prices holding steady or going down?

New is holding, used are coming down in the private market but dealers are still holding the line on used vehicles hoping to not take the hit they have coming.

Bought a 2021 Silevrado Trail Boss about a year ago and things were crazy back then. There were little to no new trucks. I was fortunate, I got GM employee discount so I did save a lot of money and got what I was looking for and this after many months of shoping ...but what you are looking for is a big notch higher and I don't know if there are that many of those trucks around.

I walk by GM dealership every day and often drive by local Ford dealership still not too many new trucks. For several months they only had used ones, prices were high and no low mileage noted.

Interesting enough, I noted many more trucks at Dodge dealerships than GM and Ford. Not sure if it is the same where you are.

Good luck, hope you do ok.

It is crazy the prices. My 2016 cummins was $65000. I haven't got a all in price yet but I'm told if I order it today it'll take min 6 months before I'll see it.

We are to the point that If you have to ask how much, you can't afford it.

Just bought a 2022 Chevy 3500 SRW 4x4 High country it was north of 100k USD. friend that works for dealer said the 2023 are going up 15-20%

Priced out a Lariat f-150 this am and it was $70K... down from 2 months ago so heading the right direction off a pretty high anchor point.

Negative inflation is unusual. I don't think prices will be coming down.

Going up 20% would put barebone diesel work trucks at around $100,000. I need a new work truck, fusterating to pay anywhere close to 6 figures for one.

Considering I bought my first 3 bedroom house on 2 acres for $47,500. 21 years ago in April.

I know some folks who live in Hawaii but fly here to do business with this dealer because of the affordability. No idea about availability but at least you can do some research on the website.

I don't see the MSRP coming down but as interest rates climb and money tightens, fewer people will be able to afford new vehicles. That may drive the dealers to be more willing to deal. Meanwhile your $ is worth less and less and if you are taking a loan the rate is going up.

Glad I bought my last truck in August of 2021. A GMC Sierra Elevation w/5.3 V8. Its the extended cab w/6 foot box.

A month after I bought it, took a trip to Virginia and to Florida visiting family.

It got 22 MPG on that trip total. Glad I bought it. Best ride ever.

Cost with my trade and discount was $46,500 I believe. My last truck at my age of 75. grin

Then I spent another $2000 for a capper that is color coded.

No pickup truck is worth that much. Maybe if it lasted 30 years, which of course it won't.

I bought a tacoma in December of 2020 for 36,600. I traded it in a couple months ago with 30,000 miles, shot tires and a shattered windshield for $38,000.

This nonsense won't hold.

Thats probably about right. The real unicorn trucks are the F450 platinums, they will sell all day every day for $120K+. Where all the vehicles are going, I have no earthly idea, but you would think somebody is buying them, melting them and repeating by the market for them.

I've had Lariats, King Ranches, Platinum's and I'm really struggling with turning a $70K vehicle into a trapping truck... and they all end up that way no matter how hard I try. Thinking of scaling down to an XLT or going a different direction all together.

Apparently new truck prices are not outrageously high as people keep buying them.

$100,000+ may seem like a lot of money, but at least you get a fancy tailgate that opens three directions and turns into a computer desk.

Re: New truck. Prices coming down or staying outrageou - 11/30/22 02:15 PM

I wish they made a truck I actually want. I want one that comes from the factory with 36" tires 4x4 with lockers. Bucket seats and an interior that's 100% water proof and can be sprayed out at the car wash. Made out of steel thick enough you can sit on the hood or have some kids run into the side horse playing and not cause 8k in body Damage.

Heat and ac with am fm radio would be nice also.

Something like an M 37 would be very nice so you could have a usable truck but still fold down the wind shield and remove the top and putt around on Sundays like jeep.

They can keep all the electronics. Gas or diesel and the top speed of 70mph for the interstate would be great.

You know a true off road truck that should only be about 25k and a much better.for me vehicle than those fancy trucks I don't want anyway.

I guess I could go fancy with my dream truck and add on board air compressor and front and rear winches.

I guess if I want it I'm going to have to build it myself.

I got a 2005 f-150 that will get a new engine when it’s need . I can throw a remanufactured engine and tranny in it for under 8000.I won’t pay 60-70 thousand for a truck.

That may work in your location but everything that is used here in the winter is a rust bucket in 10 years.

Why Is everyone worked up about new fossil fuel internal combustion engine truck prices ? Just go out and buy an affordable electric truck that uses free fossil fuel electricity. LOL, Will be driving my 2014 Tundra until the body falls off, or when I can no longer afford gasoline, which ever comes first.

I did that....but it truly is a great trapping truck. As long as the electricity doesn't come from wind or hydro dams, I am good to go. I hope all you guys if given the opportunity will think about it at some point, because with a few mods jeez it literally is like the ultimate trapping and hunting vehicles. For my F150 Lightning, I spoke with the Lightning team and let them know that they would have a lot more sales if they had a long bed(6.5FT on the F150s) , 6 seats like every other F150 can have, and to get rid of the factory 20s and just go with 18s. They were really receptive, so I will have no problem buying another one if they will have a long bed at the minimum, the shorter bed sucks bad for me. My 2004 F350 has a 8 foot bed, and my 2016 F150 has a 6.5Ft bed.

Come talk to me in 20 years heck even in 10 and we will talk about jow great that electric truck is doing and how great it is.
I am driving a 1997 now and it was a 1998 every day before this one. Your electric truck won't last and the battery mining and disposal Is worse for the environment many time over and that's not getting into the all the tax payer paid for discounts or fossils fuel powered power plants that run it.

Probably shouldn't bring up the fire hazards of the charging or when the battery's explode. Or no mater how unpractical they are for the largest % of the population thay are jamming them down everyone's throat.

I'm sure for some people they can be great. People tha t get a new vehicles every few years and won't deal with the 20k battery replacement if they can even get a replacement when it's needed. And people that live in a warmer climate and in urban settings.
For me they don't make financial since or practical since either.

Explain how you select for electricity that doesn't come from wind or hydro. When I plug something in I only get what comes out of the outlet.

Wow. I don’t think I will ever afford a new truck. I don’t do loans so that’s a lot of cash to save up. I bought a 2001 Toyota Tundra with 150k miles on it today for $2500. My 08 f-150 has 210k miles on it and will get a new engine when it goes out.

Re: New truck. Prices coming down or staying outrageou - 11/30/22 06:52 PM

I can still build my 2500 tradesmand with airbags for less than 50K. Won't own another diesel again. No way! and a guy don't need all the extras. Foo foo it up and you'll pay pay pay. It's not necessary, though, unless you have to bury the money from write offs. It's the only way it makes and sense to me.

I used the extra savings to buy a commuter car that gets 40 mpg. That car is pretty much free compensating for the miles you don't put on the truck at resale.

I've put more deer in the back of my Ford Focus than in my truck for sure. FWIW, you can fit two adult deer in the back of that car no problem and it's actually easier to load them than into the high bed of a truck.

I used to remember an old Beaver trapper who trapped the logging trails of northern MN decades ago in an old rusty Gremlin. He had it figured out. People now think they need a 50K truck to toss a $10 beaver into or drive to Wal-Mart. It's nuts to me.

You got a steal on that Tundra, it would sell the day it was listed here for three times that. And if it was a Tacoma it would be worth even more.

Prices go up and quality goes down! My 2013 Silverado has 83,000 miles and the frame is rusted through. At least they could do is use American steel and undercoat their vehicles.

The last time I bought a new vehicle off the lot was in 1980, and I paid in greenbacks; literally.

There is no way on earth I would ever pay $100K (or even 50K) for something that is going to depreciate from the day I buy it.

I have halled deer on the hood of an 85 chevet got thumbs up every time. Got to have the head on the driver side so you can see over the neck the body is to high to see over. Fill your washer fluid so you can wash the blood off thet splatters back on the windshield out of its mouth and nose.

I halled deer in the back floor board of my 1990 Ford probe, in a few different mini vans( be sure you move the kids back pack or their books and home work will get blood on them.

Had deer ride in the trunk of my Honda accord and several suv's. By fare the best to load is the mini vans. So nice and low to the ground and nice wide sliding door.

Truck are the easiest to wash up though.

You can fit three gutted does in the trunk of a 99 2 door honda civic...

Image sells, that is the problem. I make more money driving a nice truck vs a cheap car. There's a value to having a new vehicle that is not universal but still there.

Re: New truck. Prices coming down or staying outrageou - 12/01/22 03:45 AM

I'm unsure what exactly the difference is in the big horn to the laramie. Leather seats vs cloth seats seems to be one difference and $10000. The leather seats in my laramie are probably the most comfortable truck seats I've been in. When I get a minute I'll go have a look at the bighorn.

Next question. High output cummins with the aisin trans or standard 6.7L cummins with the torqueflight trans? I figure one warranty is expired I'll def delete it so maybe the heavier duty trans be the best?

Very true. Pull up to bid a tree job in a beat up rusted out truck and you might get the job if you have a low bid. But pull up in a nice truck with tool boxes and flashing lights and you will get the job with a much higher bid and the customer will be much more friendly and respectful generally.

I've driven used and usually rebuilders most of my life and still am really fond of the crew cab super duty F250 I have had for 20 years. However, at 60 years old, I have come to the conclusion life is short. My next truck will likely be my last truck...thinking real hard about a brand new one. If I can afford it, why not? The biggest reason I can think of not buying a new truck is knowing how much it will tick me off when I get the first door ding...

Very true. Pull up to bid a tree job in a beat up rusted out truck and you might get the job if you have a low bid. But pull up in a nice truck with tool boxes and flashing lights and you will get the job with a much higher bid and the customer will be much more friendly and respectful generally.

Agreed. I buy a new truck every 5 years for that reason (amongts others). That does have some return value (along with the write off). However, I think there is a point where people shy away. If I see a guy show up in a 110K, pimped out truck, bidding my tree work, I know I'm paying extra for his truck, amongts other things. Those trucks are a dime a dozen around here in the landscape, building trades. Middle road, clean and professional, is what I "think" most look for (depending on location).

That said, the new trucks are garbage compared to the older trucks. I wish they still made new older style trucks. Most guys in Alaska who live OUT won't buy a new truck (they are unreliable and can't be fixed on the side of the road). They fly down to the southern states and buy 25 year old trucks and have them rebuilt.

Donnie: Yep, I could have got 3 deer in the focus I'm pretty sure. The antlers on the buck got a little stuck in the back seat divider, however. One of those deals where they slide in real nice but it turns into a wrestling matcht getting them out.

I had n I t had my wife's van 3 days and drove it to work. Came out with a nice door ding. I parked well away from everyone and in the back of the lot when I got there. But the lot fills and empty while I'm there with my 16 hr shifts.

If I was driving a van to work, I'd park well away in a back lot to!

I felt like that when I took over my wife old van years ago. Then I got used to driving it and decided I liked it.

Coverd storage can hall 4x8 ply wood, 10' lumber, 7 people when needed in comfort, easy to get in and out of and 25mpg.
The more I drove it the more I liked it.

People like me are taking a real beating with these truck prices.

I have never owned a new vehicle and have not made a car payment since 1985. I've found the best way to have a nice, reliable truck is to buy for cash every few years. I put money away regularly for when I will need a new truck, then when it's time, I find a good deal on a reliable used truck and cash money talks, believe me. I look for pickups about 5-7 years old with about 90,000 or so on them. I drive them up to about 275k or so (I put on an average of 35k a year), then sell it and buy another. I have been doing this for about 30 years.

The cost of doing this keeps going up, which is natural, but the last truck I bought 4 years ago was a XLT Lariat with 91K I paid $15,000 for. It now has 233K on it so I'll be looking again in about a year. Suddenly, instead of $15k to buy, I am looking at probably $30-40k for a nice truck that's about 5 years old with less than 100k miles. That's a huge jump!

I'm in a good spot right now because I sold one of my small businesses recently and I could go purchase a new truck for cash, but I just can't bring myself to do it. The thought of putting $60-70k into something that depreciates goes against my entire lifestyle. Making payments on one is even worse. Even $30-$40k for used makes me sick. Plus I use a truck as a truck, so I can't be worried about door dings. My truck is in the woods.

Not sure how the next year or so will play out. Maybe I should get a truck for the bush and everyday driving, and then a nice one that I can put a lot less miles on and keep it for a lot longer. Not sure. Suggestions?

Wrestling with the same issue- I might keep my old truck and get a new one but I dread doubling up on insurance, maintenance, etc. Ideally- I would almost like a service style truck and use my wife’s SUV for when we go places… that idea went over like a fart in a spacesuit… so I remain undecided currently

Credit card debt is at an all time high as people are living beyond there means. What happens when unemployment goes to 8 % as people get laid off? Finally starting to see incentives on new vehicles as more are available. I think prices will come down but it will be a while. I feel like the oracle from Kentucky.

things are not good, 18 good eggs were $5, now $8. Thanks to all the lib voters/fraudsters. Who in their right mind who vote for more of what is going on?

The mx 5400 Kubota I was looking to buy with 7' bush hog and pallas forks. Is now 12k more for just the tractor than I could buy everything for a year and half ago. I didn't buy because I was also waiting on a land deal that fell through.

I figured I can wait untill the reason/depression hits and no one is buying. Then prices and the incentives should come back full force. I can determine by with the old tractor just fine tell them.

I wonder how the banks will handle so many homes that are over valued on their books when the foreclosures start. Then multiple that with those spending 50- 100k on vehicles and financing them for 8 to 10 years.

When people can't afford the payments and are not buying the new ones the prices on new will have to come down. Then those with loans for more than the vehicles are worth will be upside down as well.

Of course it's a gamble things could always go up more. But that tractor I have has been working since 1965 so I guess I can gamble on it. Infact I would bet that my old tractor will out last any of the new ones I could buy today.

If you are putting that many miles on a vehicle (as I am, also) you are shooting yourself in the foot by not buying a commuter car. The car ends up being free in the end and you save the miles on the truck for resale. I drive my trucks for 5, maybe 6 years and sell them with less than 75K on them. Everyone wants a used truck with less than 75 K, They still have good value. 275K..they don't.

Just a thought.

I hear you but that doesn't work for me. You can't haul treestands, bear bait, or pull a boat and other trailers with a commuter car. I have a truck because unlike most truck owners I actually need a truck. At 275k A truck doesn't have much value but it doesn't owe me anything and whatever I get is a bonus that goes towards the next one.

My commute is walking from the house to the truck. L:OL

So if I order today my fruck will be here maybe in August. I haven't pulled the pin yet and ordered but I did hear that the 2023 might be coming out with a Allison Trans. Lots to ponder.

I have been taking a different approach. I bought my first new truck in 1977 and have bought a bunch of new ones since then. The old me would buy new and trade or sell it @ 200,000 miles. Starting in 2018 i have taken a different approach. In 2018 I bought a new 2018 crew cab 4x4. Thirty some thousand miles later when the warranty ran out i traded it on a 2021. the 2021 got a stuck lifter and i traded it @ 7,500 miles on a new 2021. The newest 2021, after 10 months, has 20,000 miles on it. In about 10 months @ 36,000 miles i will shop for a new truck. The cost for me to always ride in a newer low mileage truck is a lot less than you might think. I would post the numbers, but most wouldn't believe them. Don' t knock it if you haven't tried it. My only operational costs are gas, oil changes & tire rotations. This might not be for you if you have to pay finance charges. For me the least costly vehicle expense is buying new.

Not sure where you get your information. Alaskans drive pretty much whatever they can afford. Lots of new trucks in Nome every year. When you're paying $5000 + for shipping, you're not bringing in a junker. I've owned 6 trucks, the first was an old Trooper truck, the next one brand new from Anchorage, the rest used but under 20 thousand miles. I don't know of a single "in need of rebuilding" truck purchased in the lower 48 that was brought to Nome. I recently sold a 2015 1/2 ton Chevy in Nome with 70 thousand on it for $35K.
My brother who lives on the road system buys used trucks s well, but not ones needing rebuilding.

Bernie I have 3 trucks . 2 Toyota’s a 93 and 94 I use for hunting trapping daily drivers around town and traveling to trap and bear bait . I have rebuilt Both and installed motor in one and cheap to run . I also have a 2004 f150 crew cab that is nice . All we use the Ford for is road trips and occasionally towing the boat. My suggestion get you a old beater with a heater for your daily stuff and a nice one for your travels. None Of my vehicle accumulate many miles because it is broken down among three . Have found doing this makes my nicer vehicle last longer.

For example my 93 Toyota was purchased for $900 and a new motor and clutch ran me $1650 and now has 12000 miles on it in 3 years and runs great . Plus insurance is only $105 every 6 months. I have not put more then 10,000 miles on Ford in 3 years . Just my thoughts .
