Thanks. All but one wolverine I caught last season we’re taken with 330 Conibears. For wolverines up here anything smaller then a #4 they will just tear them apart.

Re: Trapping Wolverine in Alaska 2022 - 01/04/23 02:00 AM
I use bucket sets, keeps wolverine from chewing which can knock the price down a fair amount.
Works great on cats too....................

Re: Trapping Wolverine in Alaska 2022 - 01/04/23 02:16 AM
Nice Cat, I usually catch a couple in my 330 sets every year. I tried buckets for part of a season years ago but every wolverine that passed by stayed clear of the bucket. I used white buckets and even completely covered them with spruce boughs. I think it’s has something to do with the remote area, wolverines even stay away from unboiled Lynx traps most of the time here.

Re: Trapping Wolverine in Alaska 2022 - 01/04/23 02:44 AM
I caught 3 wolves in one winter in 330s 3 years ago. Now not a wolf for miles around will go near a 330 set.

Re: Trapping Wolverine in Alaska 2022 - 01/04/23 02:55 AM
I've had wolves go up to them but never commit, was it a young one? The wolverines we catch are in a remote area but they don't seem to be bothered by them, I have heard though from other trappers that buckets don't work in their areas too. One trapper up your way uses snares on a leaning pole set for wolverine and that works well for him. They are certainly our favorite animal to trap and every time I cut fresh tracks I still get gitty as a school girl lol. Lynx and marten are our bread and butter but they crashed so we're just trapping for what my wife uses for skin sewing. Check your mailbox I sent you a PM..............................

Re: Trapping Wolverine in Alaska 2022 - 01/04/23 04:33 AM
Yeah the one in this photo was a young one, but in the same winter I also caught a large male and a medium sized female. There is a guy in Canada that has done well with milk crates, but I have yet to try it. I think I’ve only ever caught one wolverine in a Lynx snare, he had almost chewed through the cable like all the others I’ve caught in Lynx snare. I saw on YouTube a guy doing tip up snares looked like it worked. Haha yeah I’m pretty sure wolverine have been getting all of us excited at least in the last decade. Before that it sounds like they were a real menace on the Trapline destroying a lot of fur. At least the last 3 years wolverine and wolf are the only way I make money. I hope Lynx and marten make a comeback that would really help a lot. That’s awesome that your wife makes stuff with your fur. Every year I say I’ll save some fur and every year I watch it fly away. She does awesome work with beads and fur we buy or have given to us.

Re: Trapping Wolverine in Alaska 2022 - 01/04/23 05:18 AM
Based on my experience trapping wolverine I recommend a spacious walk-through cubby (16-20” wide X 36-40” Length) with a 280 or 330 BG trap at each end. My experience has been if an animal can see its way out the back end of a space, and can easily turn around within it, they are far less hesitant to enter and less apt to tear the cubby apart. In my opinion many wolverines feel crowded in a normal cubby set up with no escape route, thus they tear them apart to safely get at the bait with an escape route available.
