Good OBD2 scanner for home use

Well I think I'm ready to buy one and if anyone could recommend a good one for home use I'd appreciate it!

I am far from an expert, have an older version of this one and have used it a few times. It has done everything that I needed, including SRS airbag codes. A little clunky to figure out the menus until you get used to it.

OP , this is a tougher question than you think. Options to buy a OBD tool are vast. Newer better ones come out all the time. Buy a well recommended unit on a Monday , then some other brand makes a better one by Friday. However , don't get disheartened , they still have enough in them , so upgrading is not needed and even an older unit works fine for the most part.

Some watchouts when buying ,
look for 'free lifetime updates' , very important. I've heard horror stories of crazy fees to keep the unit working after free period ends on a product that does not have free lifetime updates.
Do not buy the cheapest one you can find. There has been incidents where these real cheap scanners have damaged OBD ports and even fried computers.

The one that Nate L posted looks nice. I don't any experience with that exact one but it is a known brand , has a lot of features , price is excellent too.

I have this one and it gets you a bunch of data , uses the phone for an interface so you can have it plugged in and be under the hood seeing it or be driving down the road

there is a touch of lag like your rpms are actually about a second behind
torque lite is the app for the phone.

Honestly, I know nothing about these, I figured one might save me some time and maybe money. The one Nate posted said 2006 and above. So, if I have a older truck it won't work?

OBDII was standardized in about 1995-1996 there were a few 94s that had it also

the Bluetooth one I have worked on everything 1997 and newer I have tried it on , some give more info some less but the 4 digit codes all seem to work

it isn't the most advanced but for 20 it is definitely useful

I have a $13 Bluetooth one that I use with an app on my phone. Torque. I think the app was less than $5. I'm in less than $20 and it works fine for me. It doesn't have to be an expensive one.
