Hard for coyotes to pass good urine especially this time of year. The quality of the urine makes a big difference. Find a good natural feature along where they are traveling, bed trap and squirt of pee. As nature and attractive as it gets.

Slim Peterson says I do it wrong and he is a great trapper so I no doubt could do better. If a smart ol coyote takes to digging traps I set another one back and off set. Works like a charm.

I caught a double this morning on a big dirt hole with urine on the backing and muskrat in the hole . The second set about 70 yards away was a double dirthole with rat in one hole chicken in the other and urine on a corn cob. Both male coyotes that took ten days to come around, for you guys that think you need to rebait or re lure , be patient !

Coyotes aren't smart. They just learn quick. Don't teach them things you don't want them to learn laugh

A dirt hole that looks natural is gold!

Thanks again for everybody’s response and Coyotes might not be smart But the reason for my question is so I don’t teach them something to make them tougher to trap that’s why I’m interested in everybody’s favorite set that works the best for them ..I realize you can never catch them all it would be nice but not possible :-)

For smart ones (ones that have been trapped for before) and are trap or lure shy, a trap bedded at a natural pee post is a killer. For those of you that don't have snow, natural pee posts will be harder to find, but a dog will make it much easier. Pay attention to your dog and they will show you and mark existing pee posts. If you have snow or ground you can see tracks in, bury a trap right where the coyote tracks are at the post and leave as little disturbance as absolutely possible.

It's like Mark said do not educated,,, coyote urine , badler urine, lure, or bait. A truly (ie) smart coyote will not tolerate it,,, it's by association. They Can be caught but not using the baits lures urines that they have associated with already. In a different place you got a chance do not educated them more. And a different trapper can make it seem simple. C. O. From Montana Has got a set that has caught a many so called smart coyotes if done right.

Don't make them,,, won't have any
There are guys that can teach you or make learning curve faster . And a lot of it is getting rid of mythology you already have about trapping coyotes.
There is no magic positions out there .
There are solid locations, solid tech., And work ethic

Urine post set, with their urine, wet dirt or yellow snow

Snare the trails. Few drips of urine on the trail in a few spots spaced out each way of the snare, not at the snare. Get them running the trail.

x2. BUT no body is listening. Its sad. Know a guy in West Texas. Tried to put a 20 something year old kid in = Truck House and Good pay for trapping coyotes. BUT young ones cant leave thier blonde girlfriend long enough to do coyote work = SAD. I might have someone a = 2 k a month cash job with lodging and truck in future. But finding a trapper with = SUPERIOR work ethic’s??? Almost impossible

If you trap beaver, skin it, cut tail off, bury at a 45 degree angle in a dug out hole, bury it tight with 3 inches of the tail side sticking out, rough dirt up all the way around it, bury your trap 8 inches out from tail side, is does not need to be off to the side , for the coyote will have to work at it to get the beaver out of the ground, this is my go to set on a trap wise coyote, with very good results.
