Seems Early For Redwing Blackbirds - 02/20/23 02:05 PM

This morning there must have been at least a group of 30 plus males. Usually I don't see them till up in March.

We have a few around every year that don’t leave for the winter. Tend to group up and stay around feedlots big cattle operations during the winter.

We saw our first robin this morning. Poor guy sure is in for a surprise, forcast says 12 to 15 inches of snow heading this way and back to around 2 degrees at night . He better get while the getting is good.

It is surprising how close to the same date ducks show back up here. I always see the first duck with in a couple days one way or another of the 15th of March. I would guess the black birds and robins are the same.

Dirty D That is something that they are there that early. You must not have winters. They do not care much for cold. We will not see them here until the end of March at the soonest. Do you always see them this early? The only birds I see now are sparrows, Hungarian partridge and I saw a raven today. Snow buntings, snowy and great horned owls, sharp tail grouse and pheasants you can see in the winter too. I have seen chickadees too, but not this winter.

Cardinals started singing here 2/1.
We usually see red wing blackbirds 3/1-3/10. Saw one last week checking otter traps. Earliest I’ve ever seen them here

Grackles showed up here yesterday, 2/20 (eastern Long Island), probably a few redwings mixed in but didn't bother to check. About right for them "here"

A month early here. By far the warmest "winter" I've seen. I work for a municipality and so far we have plowed the roads one time and salted twice.

No, usually don't See Sandhill Cranes till March. This winter has been very mild, lots of days in the 30's in Jan. and Feb. and some even in the 40's.

My neighbor has been plowing snow since '89. He keeps records, so far this winter he has plowed 4 times, the average is 10 times.

It must be a mild winter for them to be around. I had -23 for the low this morning, so I don't think that I will see any for a while.
