I have a BA in Psychology with Minors in Marketing and Anthropology. I graduated in 3 1/2 years. Later on, I went to Law School for 1 year. I got 175 on the LSAT and got a multitude of scholarship offers, but went to my old college, which was close to my house.
I always test very well, but if a subject didn't interest me, I was a lazy student. I ranked in the top percent on all the Iowa Basic skills Tests. I read at a 12th grade level in 2nd grade. I had an eidetic memory of books. I could tell you what was on a page, word for word, months later. In fourth grade I was ranked second in the United States in mathematical ability for kids my age. My parents were approached and some government group offered to pay to have me spend the Summer at a math camp in Washington DC for the nation's top scholars. I refused to do it and really angered my father. I find mathematics very boring.

BA Anthropology (archeology) U of Wyoming. I learned lot about human prehistory, geology and climate plus how to do research and write papers. That skill allowed me to compile several 150 pg +/- 'prospectuses' for a federal guiding permit which kept me busy and out of trouble for decades.
One basic US History class first day the guy got up there and told the auditorium that he did not believe in capitalism or democracy and was a communist. I got up and walked out and dropped the class. Scary part was a whole big room full of others just sat there. And that was in Wyoming. I can't imagine the nonsense they have to hear in college now.

Re: How Many - 03/03/23 06:18 AM
I see there a few guys on here with degrees in the natural resource fields, wildlife biology etc.
So I would like your input on the following if you don't mind.
I was in college for a as a wildlife biologist major myself before I felt it was a waste of time.
What really turned me was I ran into a pair of guys with masters degrees in the natural resource fields and when I found out what they were doing it shocked me.
They were working at a golf course due to the fact that jobs in the fields were very hard to get.
I also learned at the time (mid '70's) that vets had preference in hiring.
Since then I have run into many young people that have degrees in natural resource fields that are doing other than what they thought they'd be doing.
All not by their choice but the situation of more applicants than jobs.
I have a niece that has a Phd in Aquatic Entomology that ended up as a biology teacher.
Not what she wanted and a waste of a Phd education.
One of the young guys I know tried to get a internship on a study of wolves in WI. He told me there was Professors trying out for the job. He was very disheartened by the whole experience.
What chance did a guy with a BS have against guys with Phds for just an internship job?
So my question for your comments is the picture I paint pretty much true?
Very hard to get a job in many of the Natural resource fields?
way more applicants than jobs?

The field is extremely competitive. You can have 100-150 people applying for an entry level position. Many of those applicants will have masters. What (entry level menial jobs) at one time only took an AS in wildlife tech/management, now require at least a bachelors with the intention of going for a masters. I saw a job posted not long ago looking for a field bio tech. You had to be working on getting a masters.
You almost have to specialize in one discipline.
i have many hours of collage classes, no degree , I went thru a 4 year apprentice program as a millwright. I work as a millwright for 35 years in a paper mill, I work with lots of people with degrees either they couldn't find a job in there field or didn't like it once they try it , most made more money at the mill ,

I've got two BAs, anthropology and American indian studies. Do they apply to my current job? Nope. But I met my wife in college, wouldn't change that for the world.
It was my third year when I realized I wouldn't get a job in my field, but I finished anyway. Then became an auto tech, and now I write technical manuals for paper converting machines.
Just a useless associates degree. If I had it to do over again I'd have gone to veterinary school.

I worked in manufacturing and did an engineering job without a degree. I was the second one of 5 at the place without a degree.
I'll agree with the above, the most knowledgeable engineer by far that worked at the place had no degree, I was hired to replace him as he was retiring.
The man was a wealth of knowledge that no college degree offers. He could look at problems and 9 of 10 times he knew what was going on.
The other 1 time he knew where to look to gather the info to figure it out.
He got this knowledge while at the job by being observant, working with the tradesmen, reading and thru trial and error. None of these things are taught in college.
I have worked with many engineers thru my years and 1 out of 10 is worth while, the others are best ignored. Go into the shop ask the tradesmen what's going on, they almost always have a better idea than the college boys.

X2 for me. Way better off to go to a technical college and get a two year degree. I found the first two years of college are generals having mostly nothing to do with your major. Not to mention the liberal garbage most colleges try to brain wash in you today. In a technical college you get started on your major your first semester.

I took a BS in Wildlife/Fisheries Management, then a MS in Wildlife Management. 50 years of practical work experience during and after the degrees was the real education. I tried not to let the University interfere with my education. Finished off my "education" by studying coonman's writings. I've also got 2 Phd's. One in the back of my pickup and one in the shop (post hole diggers).
Did one semester in college before coach Lou Holtz told me I probably wouldn’t be playing anymore with the one good knee I had left. Dropped out and went to work construction.

Yes I got a BS degree in Wildlife Ecology and never had a job directly in that field. The number of people applying for resource positions in the early 70s was amazing. Being drafted and going to Nam took a couple years away as well. I am very glad I took all the dairy, soils, ecom etc. as I spent 37 years as an Ag Educator for adults in our Tech college system and UW Extension System. Got a lot of chance to use natural resources working with farmers for 37 years.

Re: How Many - 03/04/23 04:31 PM
Big difference in definition of "college" between USA & Canada.
Over here, college is a community college or tech school. University is about the equivalent of a US state level college or university (I think they are sort of interchangeable in the US?)
For instance, I have an accounting certificate from college here but you would need a university degree to apply for a CA professional designation (similar to CPA in US). Also, you couldn't g a law degree or P.Eng at college here.
I have a certificate and a professional designation but I never attended post secondary education until I was 30.
