Where do you aim at this deer?

Where do you aim at this deer? - 03/30/23 03:07 PM

This was Pete's deer in the zero range thread. When guys are talking bullets, rifles and such, it often comes with qualifier that it's all about shot placement, yet few ever say where that is exactly.

So where do you aim and why? (1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.........or other)

I guess it depends but if I'm with 100 yards of a property line and it's a nicer buck- I'll anchor on that high front shoulder.

What caliber ?? Obviously, you would have a different aim point using a 300 win mag as you would with a 30-30 in that scenario for example

top of the 3 in 353. i like a heart shot with my 22 250. saves a lot of shoulder meat

With my seven Mag and it was at 100 yards I shoot 3 inches High at 100 yards so I would aim 3 inches below number 5 and with my 7 mag it usually Folds within 50 yards.

Number 5, 1 if close to a property line I can't cross.

Re: Where do you aim at this deer? - 03/30/23 03:44 PM

Depends on range, gun, & how steady I am on gun. Neck work good if close. High shoulder is great for putting them down in their tracks. The way its standing the 5 is a little bit farther back than I prefer to aim. Still in the vitals but towards the back half.

Re: Where do you aim at this deer? - 03/30/23 03:49 PM

5 if I'm somewhat close , 1 or 2 if there's a chance of being off a little at some distance .

4" below the "y" right behind the eyeball with my .25-06. I hate wasting meat.

Me too, Jack. I never want to jell the heart, back straps, or any other part of meaty potential. Shots in the slats work, but I don't like them to run any distance before collapsing. I love spine shots, but even neck meat I would like to have , if possible.

Re: Where do you aim at this deer? - 03/30/23 04:38 PM

I am not that picky I can make a lot work

my ideal is red I can make anything in blue work depending on range , how fast it is running , what angle I almost never get a broadside deer typcialy some sort of 1/4ing at me or away from me so then I want to transvers the blue

normally I follow the front edge of the leg up with the vertical crosshair if you look at a few skeletons when you have the meat off you see where the neck joins the body at the front of the shoulders it dip down then goes back up
that is the connection I want to hit

Just above Gator Foot's #6, I shoot to anchor on the spot and kill all my dear to eat. While a #1 will also anchor on the spot it will also waste some loin meat.

No. 5, unless I have to stop him short then right on the yellow, you will ruin a little meat but he aint going anywhere.

Gotta be a bit careful, that neck roast is awfully good.
I like Whites thought, base of the ear. DRT.

Yep 3, no meat damage.

Re: Where do you aim at this deer? - 03/30/23 08:39 PM

Osky, that's right. The only reason I don't aim for Jack's area, right behind the eye , is that when I want to keep the antlers , for nutritious antler art...I aim just under the ear, not too far forward. Essentially the base of the ear, too. Right where the neck vertebrae connects with the head bone smile

Depending on the angle you will either take out the brain or the Atlas joint. DRT is right.

Below the Y
I don't ;like looking for them..
I only shoot to eat.

Line the vertical wire up to break the offside shoulder!

Re: Where do you aim at this deer? - 03/31/23 01:19 AM

The fools advocating headshots for the first shot should have their hunting privileges revoked.
1) you probably aren’t as good of a shot as you think you are, especially on game in the heat of the moment (but your false bravado is cute)
2) a deer can easily move its head very quickly in the split second of a shot
These two things result in crippling loss and slow death.
Shoot the shoulder, or just behind it in the ribs if you are worried about meat - nice big easy target, guaranteed to kill.
If you have NEVER missed a shot on a target or deer, then by all means aim for the fist-sized target on a live animal, but no one can honestly make that claim.

anywhere within 2 inches of the Axis vertebra and the deer is down with a spinal dislocation with the shock wave.

But it does take a good steady hand and know what the deer is going to do.
Based on one foot forward with that deer it is ready to bolt.....if you read it's tail and ear location you base your shot

Read the big picture before the shot

I used to pin the shoulders , aim for the opposite shoulder. It’s deadly, anchors them . Then I learned how to smoke the shoulders. When slow smoked properly, that’s some fine dining! Now I try to save them, so mostly shoot through the rib cage now.

Deer has 3 off buttons Only one is numbered and an option on this target 2 is no wiggle not even a step . If I’m shootin does it neck / head shots the other 2 off buttons If they run you missed . A deer has a “kill “ zone the size of a basket ball in its chest . Angle distance or direction the deer is moving changes that point of aim . For you guys that say you hold left or right up or down of any of these numbers to “ avoid” meat damage is full of it . First and only thought any hunter has is kill that deer ! Not if you aim 2 inches to the left I won’t “ jelly “ the heart ! Lol lol lol a jelly heart is a dead deer every time

So far there has been 75 shots on this deer
and during the process only 33 computer screns were hit
some guys even took multiple shots and still keep trying

just poking fun at all the vegetarian hunters pre April fools joke
