Good Friday Plant Your Spuds

Good Friday Plant Your Spuds - 04/07/23 11:54 AM

Good Friday is spuds planting day. Most years I have but this year the ground is still froze. Snow is gone but ground is hard and cold will be a while before I plant this year.

If the former, I'll have to drink some first.
If the latter, already planted.

I never plant potatoes until the first week of May here in northern Pa. Get the soil temperature to 50, and three weeks before last frost.

I’d need a jackhammer here.

I think the ground is thawed here but would have to plow the 3 feet of snow off with the dozer to see lol. Maybe May

We had 10" of rain in March, and nearly 3" already in April. One of my 2 gardens still has standing water, as the ground is still just saturated. However, weatherman said we should have 9 days without rain and highs in the low 70's, so Lord willing, I can get some gardening done! What varieties are you planting?

the neighbor had to do some work on his eclectic line to his well a couple days ago. He had to use a jackhammer to break the soil. He gave up at about 6" down. We will not be planting any suds or spuds anytime soon.

Been working at the ranch today on well that I need to get going. I dug a 4 foot hole early part of this week. I had about 8 inches of frost and was good to go.

I came home and had a lawn sprinkler I ruined last and thought if ground was frozen there to replace it. It wasn't frozen I dug it up and screwed in a new one.

If it wasn't for the mud and still way to cold, I could plant them, but I won't yet.

It has been an odd winter in so many ways.

I have over three foot of snow in the garden. I did not move it there, it drifted in over the winter. I just saw a flock of crows fly by. They are saying melting temperatures next week. I got another inch of snow last night.
