A question for chicken folks.. - 05/26/23 08:38 AM
Have any of yall ever had a hen that crows?
I have a 3 year old lakenvelder that is 100% an egg layer.
A couple weeks ago one of my mean hens got ahold of her and I had to bring her inside to doctor her comb for a few days and during the 5 days I had her inside doctoring .her she crowed 3 times that I witnessed.
She sounded just like a rooster and arched her neck..the whole 9 yards..exactly like my roosters.
At the time I had to banty roosters quarantined because they were being super aggressive with then hens,so they were also inside crowing.
I've never had it happen before and I have and have had alot of chicken over the years.
If someone told me.they'd witnessed a hen crowing I'd have thought they were high.
Any of yall ever seen a hen crow before?

Was she watching TV while she was inside? The liberal commercials probably turned her Trans, js.

I have never heard or seen anything like that! I wonder if there is a small percentage of hens that crow for some reason or if yours is just seriously confused.

My mamaw had a hen that crowed when i was was young. If i remember correctly she was either a part game hen or a banty. Seems like i have heard an old saying that goes something like " a crowing hen comes to no good end"

I have one now like that. She even mounts the other hens. Raised in an all hen environment until now. I have a few rooster pullets in the fence now. When they come of age, she's going to get a surprise.

I've had Buff Orpington hens that would "change" into butch hen "roosters". One at a time as the last one passed on, They'd crow, grow spurs, and act like a rooster, Very strange and I've never seen or heard of it before....

Cathryn, that does happen occasionally. I've read numerous articles about hens crowing. Here's a short one that covers a few causes.

I had a light Brahma hen, that previously laid, molt out into rooster plumage with hackle feathers on her neck, a saddle and sickle feathers at the tail. She started crowing and fell over dead when crowing, while I was in the barn. Something must have gone wrong hormonally in her.
