Great deal

If, I'm understanding what you paid for it, $50 cash plus 100 lbs. of feed plus 5 large round bales. I don't think you got a very good deal. Being a dairy crossed with a hereford at the local auctions around here, he would only bring about a third of the price as a full blooded beef steer.

Why sell him? Fatten him up for 12 months and butcher it. I raised Holstein calves for years for my own personal meat. You can't raise them as large as Angus but butchered on the smaller side and they are great meat.

5 bales of last years hay, plus the feed and cash seem about right. It doesn't look like a bottle calf. Probably cash equivalent to 250, that's a good deal.

How much would beef/holsteins be there? I have a truck and trailer...

Not just 50 cash

100 lbs winterizer feed and 5 large Round Bales

225.00 trade value

Still worth it

Your hay is cheap compared to around here, large round grass bales are $125 to $150 a piece here if you find anyone to sell them. That’s for crap grass, I seen brome rounds bales go for $235 a piece on an auction last month. Most of our bales are 5X6’s maybe his are smaller also.

Most of the hay left here Is a year old and has sat outside for that year. It is not great quality this time of year

I'll feed 2 or 3 year old Grass hay to my beef anyway

An old time beef rancher told me that 15 years ago. Said it goes through them shower.

We can buy 6x6. 1,100lb bales for 30 or 40 bucks

local auction had fat cattle sell for 1.92 last week that makes a 1500 pound calf worth just shy of 3000 dollars

Re: New meat maker... - 05/28/23 02:54 PM

A a couple of years ago beef cross steers were bringing almost as much as colored calves for 300 pounders but you took Holstein price at the kill plant, that’s one reason I never bought any plus at the time beef plants didn’t want them because of the Holstein in them and the Holstein plants didn’t want them because of the beef in them, but if he is 50/50 get him a little bigger and put him on full feed shell corn and pellets he’ll finish at about 1000 pounds but will be some of the best meat you can get.

before the dairy buy out in 1985 dairy fats broght whith in a couple cents of beef fat calves and dairy cows were more than beef cows the calves were taken from the cow soon as it was born and fed grain its whole life and cows were fed grain all the time they were milking the beef industry didnt like the buy out the dairy is still the best if fed grain its whole life
