Trigger Locks - best/easiest

Trigger Locks - best/easiest - 09/02/23 04:45 PM

So, now that I'm "old" and need glasses for the first time in my life, I've run into an issue with trigger locks.
I used to have everything keyed alike, Allen trigger locks, but it took one time leaving a key in the truck for me to try combination locks, which was amazing in theory LOL.
Suddenly, I can't read the dang numbers on the dials in the dark, even with glasses.

Is there some other type of lock that doesn't require me to remember a key every darn time? I've checked Google, YouTube and Amazon with no luck, looking for suggestions.

There are 4 numbers I believe on the combination trigger locks.
Just set them at 000x and leave the last one, one click up or down.
Dont need to see them unless someone messes with them. Then you know someone has been fiddling with your guns.

Don't you have a key on your regular key ring? Nobody goes anywhere without the key ring on them. I also keep a small flashlight on my ring for seeing the key hole in the dark.

No key needed for mine......no locks on my guns!

Re: Trigger Locks - best/easiest - 09/02/23 05:13 PM

BigBob, the problem arises during duck hunting....I don't like bringing car and house keys out on the lake for fear they'll drop in the drink if I'm fishing them out from inside waders in a boat at 4:30am.
Boco, I do that (similar) with the combination, but I've had the dials roll in the case while traveling.
I know it's a long shot and I should probably just learn to manage, but if there's a better way, I'd like to know

Why do you use trigger locks when your duck hunting

Re: Trigger Locks - best/easiest - 09/02/23 05:30 PM

You dont need trigger locks on guns when going hunting.
Leave the trigger locks at home.

Hang a key on a lanyard and wear it around your neck. Readily available without fumbling in pockets, or losing it in the drink. smile

I know that, and you know that...but from experience, LEO don't know that and aren't inclined to sit through a Google search to prove them wrong LOL.

Seriously I know what they are, never owned one never will. A total worthless feel good bit of kit.

All guns are always loaded, always.

yup use the cheap cable ones they give away for free all over the place and keep the MASTER key in your truck

Master key is the cable cutters for snares , snip and they are off in a second faster than finding the key

I am guessing Canucistan requites them or something or we wouldn't be having this discussion

those locks are intended to keep a 4 year old out , a zip tie does the same thing

If you ever fly with a weapon you’ll own one or several. I use what comes with the firearms when I buy them. Got a pile of them. Even carry extra with me which came in handy when I only had one lock on my gun case. TSA always steals them on the outgoing trip, but demands two on the gun case on the return trip. I figured I’d they’re going to take them anyways I’ll just put one on…nope they wouldn’t check me in without another lock. Spare trigger locks in my carry on saved the day.

When you don't have sufficient locking storage like a safe or cabinet, trigger locks are necessary. I agree that they are a bit of a silly contrivance, but they keep the peace at home and avoid unnecessary drama while traveling.

Rusty, I'll be hunting early goose north of Oshawa and then probably Rondeau Park, Lake St Clair and maybe Hullet Marsh near Goderich.

I get why you would want to avoid travel hassle
and locking your guns in some storage is good
not sure I understand what they do to keep the peace at home.

it is not a requirement to lock or even unload your guns at home here in the USA
(it is a requirement that your minor children don't go do stupid things with them while unlocked)
handguns can be left loaded in cars in a lot of states.
and shotguns can be laid across the back seat unloaded in many states, in some states may even be loaded.
you have to deal with what you have and I get that , but this is why you get the answers you get , gun culture is very different. in the two places.

Is that a Canadian law?

My trigger locks at home was a long piece of leather with a buckle on one end. Introductions were started young and learned quickly. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had an unloaded firearm in the house.
In the truck, the normal firearms are always kept loaded. Shotguns are generally transported unloaded and in floating cases when heading duck hunting.

Exactly. Start them young.

But I'm seeing the reason he's asking is for one of those stupid nanny state laws.

What's next, mandatory chastity belts to prevent the spread of STDs?

Probably do not make them in Boco's size.

Warrior, because I don't have sufficient safe space, I need trigger locks for storage. Also, while traveling, I won't store them in a locked vehicle, so required for legal storage also.
As mentioned above, many police officers don't know that trigger locks are not required during transport and I'd rather not get in the argument on the side of the road.
As for home, it's my wife's only rule since we had kids. Easy compromise. I've been drilling my kids since they were very young. They won't touch a firearm without my permission and they won't let another kid do it either.

Trigger locks are a fact of life for me

This^^^ is how I was raised too.

The butt whoopin' you'd get if you messed with the guns would've been worse than getting shot....lol

Dang, sorry to hear.

Years ago I've been in Manitoba hunting and if it was required, I didn't have one so is this new regulations or by Province?

Sorry, I now see its not a requirement.

What kinda ducks you get on st.clair ? Have wondered about that lake a while. I think it's in a different fly way then I am. I drove down there to pick up a camper once and the snow geese on the sides of the roads were unreal. We don't get snow geese where we are.

Mallard, gadwall, black, widgeon, gw teal, bw teal, ringneck, bluebell, canvasback, redhead, goldeneye, common merganser, hooded merganser, wood duck, pintail (few), Canada Goose, incidental snow/speck, shoveler, ruddy, incidental oldsquaw... Basically all of them LOL but the migration doesn't seem to hit full force until the season is over.

We get all those as well but never pintails and we have shot a few old squaw but very few. And never snow geese

A gun ain’t doing me no good locked up. Heck my wife has one in her purse at all times and wears a fanny pack on her evening walks with one in it. My kids had their own firearms in their own rooms with ammo since they were 8. They’ve always said clear and showed the weapon when entering a truck, when in a pit duck hunting, when exiting the swamp after a good Woodie shoot, and when cleaning. Guess things are a little different down South. They were hunting by themselves at 12. Birds, small game, or deer, they just went. They knew where and what they could shoot. They knew to load the weapon after climbing in the deer stand and once on the field or in the swamp. They knew to unload before exiting all of the above. My 2 year old Granddaughter knows exactly what a firearm is and that she’s NOT to touch it…she’s 2! It’s how I was raised and how I raised my boys, and now they’re raising their children the same way. We never “hid” guns from them and maybe that’s why there was never a fascination of “checking” one out. They were just there and if they wanted to hold it or know about it, they asked. They couldn’t hunt until they could field strip any weapon they were taking and know what to do incase of a malfunction.

Right or wrong, it worked for us.

Not sure I understand you Wanna Be. TSA does not require trigger locks on declared firearms in checked baggage. Maybe you are talking about the number of lock spaces on a hard sided case ? Usually they DO require a lock in each hole that is available. What am I misunderstanding ?
