Slingshot for grouse

Slingshot for grouse - 09/19/23 01:04 PM

Can this be done or waste of time? Thinking of bringing one on upcoming moose hunt in Ontario I will be scouting two days before season opener and thought if I had the chance to take a few without making noise I would try when I was up there last bear hunting they were everywhere and not hard to get about 30 feet away

taking any out of season seems like a bad idea in another country

I think they can be taken with a sling shot but I would think a pellet gun may be a better tool.

A slingshot makes a lot more noise than you might think.

It depends on if you don't want to alert game or game wardens.

Yeah it is legal I called and asked just thought it would be something different and a challenge

I've seen them taken by throwing a stick, yes a slingshot will work.
Air rifle is also a good tool for raking them.

David killed Goliath with one. How big are their grouse?

Re: Slingshot for grouse - 09/19/23 03:24 PM

They are ruffed grouse not as big as the blue grouse I have shot in Colorado

My boys are killers with their slingshots! They have shot a lot of stuff with them! I replace the rubber bands on them once or twice a year.
They build hunting blinds and stalk whatever they’re hunting. I’m very impressed with them!

Sorry to derail your thread a bit!

Just be careful if transporting one through NJ.
Them wingnuts made it a felony to be caught with one.

I did that a few times for Squirrels while Deer hunting! Worked for me.

You can do it but you'd better be ready to run up and step on their necks real quick while they are still stunned. I've shot a lot of rabbits with a slingshot and it never killed them outright. It did slow them down enough for me to come grab 'em.

Them spruce grouse must just sit there a lot were shot on the Alone show with a bow to get that many consistently from non-bow hunters they must be easy.

Killed plenty with just rocks.
There is a way to hunt with thrown rocks that is deadly, learned it from the Cree.
Its a group effort, but grouse are easy enough one person with a handful of good sized rocks.

I always used to carry a sling shot while moose hunting in Quebec..
I ve killed a few spruce grouse , they are good eating..
I had access to some surplus ball bearings , that where cheap ammo ...
With some practice, you get pretty good at it ..

I don't know anything about grouse but a sling shot should kill them fine if you can shoot well enough. My boys have taken several critters with theirs. Last I can remember were pigeons in the neibors barn thar were leaving a mess on the hay. One was a banded racing Homer from Oklahoma city area about 700 miles from homebwhen it was killed.

Seems I remember Jack O'Conner using a slingshot to hunt grouse out west during an elk hunt.
Many Canadians call them stupid birds.
At least where I was in Quebec , they hunted them a lot.

Use a gun. If it is anything like around here there are folks shooting at grouse all season. The moose hear plenty of gun shots. I walked up on these on the way back to the truck after shooting some grouse. [Linked Image]

Cool pics JPark. My kiddo became a full on savage about that age but had a pellet gun by then. With a sling shot he and I could probably hit the side of a barn but would have starved trying to hit ground squirrels.

All depends on what kind of slingshot your using, a wrist rocket for example with lead shot will pass right through most game at 20/25 yards or if you go for head shots, my friends as a kid nicknamed me head hunter because that’s what I did and it’s totally doable with some practice

Re: Slingshot for grouse - 09/20/23 01:00 PM

I saw some video's, of snaring grouse , They use a thin pole with a snare wire , on the end. They approached roosting grouse, placed the noose over the grouses head and set the snare. If several in the tree , snare the lower one first and work your way up. It definetly wouldn't work on our local grouse. old243

Re: Slingshot for grouse - 09/20/23 02:50 PM

used them ever since I was a kid and I use 00 buck or ball bearings, I lost a lot hit in the breast, a side shot works good breaking a wing. The best shot I found is in the back, you hit the backbone and they are stunned or paralyzed fall out of the tree or walking away from you just start flapping.

Re: Slingshot for grouse - 09/20/23 03:07 PM

I used to shoot blue grouse with a wrist-rocket. I'm sure they still make them, or something similar. They were the go-to slingshot back in the 70's.
