Sap Tappin'?

Sap Tappin'? - 02/02/24 02:18 AM

I saw where someone had tapped about 50 maple trees today. I've never done it, but is it plausible under current weather conditions? Seems a might early! Any of you folks at it!

I have a couple coworkers who are tapping in hopes of catching this early run and using the usual later time to get other stuff done. Sounds like they are running but definitely hot and heavy. Next couple days they should run good here if they’re going to at all much before the cold snap in a little over a week. One guy boiled yesterday just so he could say he’s boiled sap in January! Happy trapping! ScottW

I put my taps out last night in Eastern Nebraska. They were dripping

I just came in the house from the second boil of the year. Weather for the next week looks excellent.

I think so. The sap will run any time the temperature gets about 40 0 F during the day and freezes at night. That is fall winter, or spring. Usually, though, fall or winter runs are extremely short and tap holes heal up before the main run. I don't think that's going to happen this year.
