There’s too many people

There’s too many people - 02/25/24 11:20 PM

I can’t stand living in this town. I remember when it wasn’t so built up. You would hardly ever see another car on the highway on a Sunday. They’re tearing down more woods to build another strip mall. So much traffic today when we were going out to help a cousin. A bunch of people aimlessly wandering. Reliefers spending the money I provide them as a working class citizen.
I’m wondering if we don’t belong here anymore. I had a tension headache until we got out into the country for some fresh air.
By the way my cousin has to move into section 8 housing. He’s getting older with mental disabilities so the poor sap has to move closer into town. He gave me some taxidermy fishies, God love him…

Re: There’s too many people - 02/26/24 12:24 AM

Get out in the country where you belong. I just walked in the house after watching the bass hitting insects on top of the water in our pond. Caught some crappie earlier today, went to look for a groundhog hole also, due to some game cam photos. I didn’t find the hole or the groundhog, but I will. Now, in a few minutes, I will go outside, a beer in hand, and listen to the coyotes as they start their night time activities.
You should not have to suffer, and it will happen if you want it!

Re: There’s too many people - 02/26/24 12:30 AM

I live in the woods, can't see any houses until the leaves drop off. Most that come here don't stay long because they say it smells so bad. smile A couple chickens, ducks and geese are dinner for the fox, coyote, bobcat, coon, owls and fisher in these parts.

Containment and protective measures need to be taken to keep them alive as best as you can. Free range birds don't last long around here.

Country living is great especially with no real close neighbors. Coyotes and owls are heard almost nightly.

Re: There’s too many people - 02/26/24 01:27 AM

I'm old enough to remember when my area of southeast PA was truly rural. Tens of thousands of acres of farmland and relatively few people in the country. Then came the developers offering obscene amounts of money to hard-working farmers who never even dreamed about having that much money. The Amish farmers wouldn't sell, thank God for them or the entire area would be one giant suburb by now.

Some of the dutch farmers told them to get off their property and never come back but many sold. And urban sprawl happened. And it's still happening.

When I moved to my current home in 1989 it was in a pretty rural area for SEPA. Only two cars and a school bus went by my house most days. As urban sprawl continued housing developments sprang up all around the area. None were closer the five or six miles but it put a lot more traffic on the area roadways.

Some of the development dwellers figured out that my 1.5 mile long road is a shortcut between them and the nearest city 18 miles away. We have regular rush hours now.

I have a second home/camp in north central PA near the NY border. There are no paved roads in my township and I'm the last stop for electricity. There are no rush hours except in deer and turkey seasons. It's where I go to get away from the rat race.

We will have to get used to the growth and adapt or at least our children and grand kids will. Anticipated to be 420-450 million in the USA by 2050. most of those additional 100 or so million will reside near or in the 25 largest metro areas but all areas will feel the growth. Many of the largest metro areas will really grow and use up lots of land and probably invest heavily in mass transit to shuttle people in and out of the major loops.

Re: There’s too many people - 02/26/24 02:19 AM

I always thought I was born a hundred years too late, but I thank God I wasn't born a hundred years from now. I don't think this world will be a place I want to live in then, and definitely not this country other than maybe in Alaska.

I lived in a city, Buffalo NY, for about 3 months when I was going to college. I don't see how anyone can do it. It was soooo depressing. That's the only time I've lived in a city, and I never will again. I live in Heaven these days. My nearest neighbors are over a mile away as the crow flies, and my half gravel/ half dirt road is 3/4 of a mile from the house. I could walk around naked all day if I wanted outside and the only person that might see would be the occasional plane flying over, lol. Got a small pond full of brim, and trying to get some crappie started in there. Little crick meanders through our land, and I have 60 acres to explore. Couldn't ask for any more!

Went antelope hunting a few years ago out west by myself. Slept in the back of my suv parked in field or pasture entrances. Nearest house anywhere I made camp was at least 3 miles and never one in view. In 3 days I talked to one farmer, a pair of hunters and the game warden. It was awesome.

Re: There’s too many people - 02/26/24 12:57 PM

Been saying it for a decade. What’s the number? We know how big the continental US is down to a mile. How many people can we hold? What does that look like? When a million people come into the country it’s not just housing. How many new Wal Marts does a million people get you? Interstate freeway lanes? McDonald’s? Dentist offices? Government buildings? On and on and on ad nauseum. The frontier closed over a century ago. We have plenty of people and you would think a smart person in the government would have at least an idea of all this looks like.

Re: There’s too many people - 02/26/24 01:28 PM

Grew up in the city but had Grandparents with farms. Goal in school was to move by them and that is what happened. We live in the country. Not ideal but our country can hold and feed a tremendous amount of people. I am sure we are the most developed/advanced country with the most available space for people. Bad thing is that it is becoming impossible for the common person to get a piece of the countryside.

Going the other way here. When I graduated high school there were 560 kids in k-12. Today there is 243 in k-12. Many schools are have or are considering merging. As it is most schools are merged with 1 or 2 other schools for sports.

One good thing about the state of NY. LOL

Edit: I graduated in 1984

Two schools up here are down to graduating 35-40 students per year total for both. Can’t even discuss merger. imo dumber than dumb!

Unreasonable amount of time on the school bus is cited in most cases against mergers here, which I completely agree with. Some would ride the bus for an hour and 45 minutes.

Another is the all powerful teachers union not wanting job losses. In my hometown school district there's one teacher for 8 students.

Smasho, Don't you live in Fayettenam??

You should be able to find some ruralness.

My aunt just sold her farm near chaintown. Her nearest neighbor was 3/4 mile on direction. The other was a mile away. She couldn't see either of them.

The only real traffic by her house was during the summer when people were going to creek falls.

Re: There’s too many people - 02/26/24 04:44 PM

I live in the country. Nearest neighbor about 3/4 mile. Cant see a house light from my place as my property backs up to about 60,000 acres of land that does not allow a permanent structure. My polaris ranger is started much more often than my truck or car. The only downside I have found - if you need a bolt or plumbing fixture or loaf of bread - it is 25 miles one way.

MOST developed and advanced. The masses in China are poor compared to us, with Ukraine Russia has proven their technology is not up to ours, vast majority of Canada is unlivable at the current time based on what the average person will tolerate.

Out skirts turn into town quickly, I have probably 15 new house built near me/ down my road since I bought the farm. It's only going to continue. Lots of fields becoming subdivision, business parks, and apartment complexes going in within 8 miles. That will draw more people wanting just a few acres and willing to pay stupid money for them and build more houses. And they will raise my property taxes even more.

Lots of space to go if you want to be alone or by one's self. Only 15% of the earth's surface is impacted by humans and 50% is not inhabited, but is harsh.
