Drone flying around the house!!!

Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/15/24 11:26 PM

I'm 127 miles from home at work and my wife calls asking about legal issues with people flying drones around the house. Apparently my boys heard something and it was a drone flying all around the house.

Now my wife is not having it. It could be looking in windows, stalking our kids, and or looking for things to steal. I told her we may have small legal issues but it it is around the house 7.5 shot should bring it down fast.

Honestly I'm not having it either. Both boys are out watching for it to come back.

It could be someone playing with their new toy but they better learn respect or they won't have that toy long because I don't know who or what their intentions are so will assume they are not good.

Anyone have any issues with things like this. It's the first time for me.

Did it simply fly by, or did it linger and move about.
They are often used for surveying wildlife, power lines and whatnot, and a flight pattern is programmed into it. Those will just be flying buy in a straight line and maybe come back a fair distance away on a parallel path to cover a wide swath or a big grid pattern.

A new user may not realize how close they are to a home and just be experimenting. Going out and waving them off should address it if that is what is going on. Even if you don't get a chance to do that, they should quickly realize the error of their ways and not repeat. Beyond that I would be concerned and willing to use the shoot down option and/or notify LE. The LE option may be the best route depending on your situation.

It hung around a bit I from what the wife said. I was not there and that's my problem. I would have smoked it very quickly with any of the shotguns conveniently placed. I'm sure 4 buck or 00 buck would have worked well enough.

LE is more for people in town. Out on the farm we tend to handel things ourselves. LE takes to long to respond. Figure they can let me know if whoever from it is is to worried to come pick it up if they want it back.

Insurance companies use drones to inspect roofs of property they insure. But I think they would let someone know if it was obvious someone was home

Amazingly, Boco is probably right about something happening in America. A huge number of rural counties are using drones to explore and take pictures of properties for tax assessments. They did it here.

How is it a crime to shoot a piece of plastic from your own yard, above your yard, without shooting across property line?
It’s like shooting skeets. The mess stays on your yard. Anyone has a problem with that is an idiot.

I have no problem with this. It's no different than someone looking in my windows, they will get a load of buck shot also. This is not Canada we have the right to self defense. Besides I would love to see they try to charge an 11 or 13 year old for shooting down a drone over the house they thought was looking in the window at their mom or sister.

I don't believe the owner would come knocking wanting it back. They may send the sheriff deputies. Either way I can afford to pay for a drone. I can't afford to take chances about child predators and or thieves watching my home. Common since is not to fly that low to someones house.

My boys do have some pco air guns but they are just for cheap practice. They normally grab powder burners. There may be a baseball around somewhere but we are not big sports people.

If you don’t mind paying for a drone and court cost, fire away, lol! I’m thinking it illegal to shoot something out of the sky, but I guess you could go Rambo and find out for sure.
Posted By: BTLowry

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/16/24 11:36 AM

Illegal to shoot one out of the air

Also illegal to fly one without a license that is out of your sight I believe

Also illegal to tresspass to retrieve a crashed one as far as I know

If it is following the same path in and out of your yard, a strategically placed cast net could cause it some issues laugh

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/16/24 11:58 AM

Try to ID the quality of the drone, that will give some indication if it’s a hobbyist or a professional (Insurance Co or gov entity). Some folks just don’t think. We were playing a gig and next thing we know there is a drone flying eye level across the stage. Having seen the operator during the flight, I approached him during the break and pointed out there could have been a lot more surprises when it happened and maybe it would have been a good idea to ask or at least inform the band what his intentions were beforehand. “I never thought of that, I apologize.”

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/16/24 12:05 PM

If it's an insurance agency or something similar, shouldn't they at least notify the landowner first?
If the thing is just flying by I'd figure no big deal. But if it's hanging around and you have no idea why, I'd say its fair game.

Drones=peeping Tom's. That's what I call them. There are no houses close to me. On a Saturday night with family out in front of my house by my pond. Circled us briefly and I gave two warning shots. Next time it comes down. And I will have my day in court.

A friend stopped by yesterday, we were in the driveway when one came and circled. The third time it circled he asked, “What are they doing?” I replied, “Taking pictures of you and your vehicle, getting your tag number and the like.” lol

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/16/24 03:36 PM

I really don't think a federal charge will just be left alone if you don't show up.
Don't shoot any aircraft from the sky.
Call the county and ask if they were doing property surveys, if not then report it to the sheriff.
It will take your picture of you shooting it, don't risk a federal offense.

The attack drone sounds like a good idea though, lol.

The idea of doing some skeet shooting next time it shows up might work, get a hand thrower and have some fun with the kids.

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/16/24 04:22 PM

  • You cannot shoot down a drone, even to "protect" your property, (unless it were armed)
  • A fence around your property might give you the same expectation of privacy from the air as from the ground
  • A drone should not be operating within 50ft of your home.
  • The drone must be within line of sight of the operator, so he is reasonably nearby. Watch where the drone goes, or have the Sherriff do it.
  • Once the operator has been located and given notification, any further flights over your property are subject to criminal trespass.
Local regulations vary all over the place; but, above are general expectations. Now, on the other hand you decide to make your own rules; expect the other party to do the same.

I have adopted my own rules of conduct entitled Seven Years of Bad Luck

You can do whatever you want. I am not letting a pervert or thief either one video the inside of my home.
By the time a deputy got here the thief pervert would be in another county. IF the thief pervert calls the law I guess a jury will decide if video invasion of privacy should be tolerated.

I was on a trout trip last spring, my wife called in a tizzy. There was a drone hovering around above our place.

It was late evening, long after normal business hours. I suspected that it belonged to a neighbor that lives about a 1/4 mile away. I shot him a text real quick asking if it belonged to him. He replied that it was his, it was a gift for his kid. I asked him to not fly it over my place, particularly when I'm not home. And also told him that if I seen it in my airspace that I would hand deliver the pieces back to him after it crashed.

He apologized and we haven't seen it since.

So we’ve gone from flying over the house to hovering around windows? Which was it??

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/17/24 04:21 AM

I understand your concern about the wife and kids and maybe someone snooping, most likely it's just someone playing and learning to use their new toy.

One thing that you might want to consider, give your Town Council a call, explain what happened. Or the police or Sheriff's Dept. That should get the word out, probably have a little note in the local paper too.

But I'd tell your kids, wife and everyone, if it happens again, to wave it off. Someone, the operator of the drone is watching their screen, tell them to get the H outta here, flip them the bird or something.

I can think of 4 or 5 people that have drones. One of my guys just got his "drone flying license". He does pictures as a side job. He needed a license before he could legally sell pictures. He had a little drone to start with, it'd fold up and fit inside a shoe box. He brought it here in the house and handed it to me. I've never got to see it in the air.

Then he upgraded, the new one has a better camera, longer range, more flight time and all. I forget, he paid like $1,600 for the thing. Honestly, from the get-go, he thought that folks would pay big money to have an aerial picture of their house and yard, business or whatever. So far, things haven't worked out the best.

I'll tell you this, I'll never tell my buddy. He took drone pictures of my old hunting camp, they are nice pictures in a way. Probably 1/4 of the picture is the roof. My buddy knows this, my brother knows and a bunch of other folks do too. It's only been 4 or 5 years ago, I painted that tin roof. With a brush, hanging onto a ladder. I forget, a 4 or 5 inch brush? Honestly, I know that roof very very good, and hope I never need to paint it for a long long time. I slopped the paint on heavy!

But I'm not impressed with his pictures. But, I can't find any spots that I missed. lol

So start with they were surprised. Their mom asked them what they were heading out the door so fast with shotguns for. Assuming predator or groundhog not drone. Naturally she was surprised then bothered when she watched it.

So no my wife asked them not them her and she asked me if it was legal for someone to fly it around the house and be ok for the boys to shoot it down. I said it may not be legal I'm not sure but I don't care if it's low and scoping out the house thank it down if they need to.

Yes, not many are made to work 16 hr days. Must be another overly sensitive victim of the times. Sad to see it affecting so many. I don't really care if you don't like my response or the hurt feelings drone operator doesn't like it that he can't fly his drone around people's home with no issues. There are still Americas left that won't cower and be walked on. The drone operator with his bed wetting and If someone would shoot my drone down like he was a big man and going to do something is what got my response.

If he is not flying his drown where and how it shouldn't be using respect and courtesy he won't have problems. Use it rudely in some places he will not have a drone. If he came looking for it like he was a big man with aggression after flying it close enough and long enough around my place for it to be destroyed it would not end well for him. But like all keyboard commandos if he would do anything it would be call someone else to come out not man enough to come get it himself.

Like I said if you don't like the assessment head back over to your safe space.

It was most likely some jack leg with a new toy. They got a pass once.

Did they let it know for sure it was seen by wife and kids, wave at it or flip it off?

Call law enforcement and ask if anyone has complained about a drone flying over their property.
The county, as stated, could be doing property work for taxes.
If your kids or you shoot down a county drone if will be a pain in the you know what for you.

If they are and are flying it intrusively then they are at fault, make some calls.

Someone had to be close I would think, that is creepy if not legitimate reason for being there.
Sherriff should understand that feeling by your wife and kids and check into it.

Operating a drone has to be by done by line of sight does it not ? Anyone Know ?

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/17/24 04:04 PM

I don't know if it is used for tax reason or anything county it takes a operator. If this is the case they should get off their backside and come knock on the door and fill me in on what is going on. If they doing it legal they would show up quite fast when it ends up on the ground in a pile scrap. If it isn't legal they probably won't show up. If it was around my house for a long time I would take my chance. They can come and get it then.

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/17/24 05:01 PM

Blow that thing into smitherings. There would need to be another drone flying with it to prove you shot it.

And without the pieces of the blown up drone…what drone?

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/17/24 05:14 PM

Above I told you about my buddy that got his "drone license". He told me at the time the rules, it needs to be in sight and can't go up more than 400 feet.

A while back he did take drone pictures of a man's property. The man recently built 3 spring fed ponds, he intends to raise and sell trout. Pay for fishing ponds. Really, you'd never be able to get those pictures from the ground.

Another guy posted a video, last fall when our leaves where at their peak colors. He took his drone up, made a slow easy 360* rotation, that was a nice video. Not like being there in person, but still better than just a still photo.

I know another guy that posted a video of a ball game, Little League or something? Not the whole game, maybe a 5 minute video? It was clear enough that I could read the numbers on the players shirts. So they do have their uses.

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/17/24 06:55 PM

Again, the thing has a camera and gps, in real time, you shoot it and there's a video feed to the operator of the shooter and exactly where it is. Now I don't care if they get shot or not, but it makes more sense to be "under cover", no sense proving you did it. Jamming at least won't show images, but that equipment would probably have to be home made. Probably very doable as those things only run on 2 frequencies, or so I hear.

Shoot down the drone. Get a knife. Wipe your prints of it. Throw it down next to the shot down drone. Tell law = Drone brought a knife to a gun fight ! LOL!!!!

Edit. Copied and sent in a pm. .

Your boys were the ones that heard the drone according to your original post. Why did they not handle it like you said in the above? Sounds like they bothered their mother and father to me. I think you really need to cool your jets, maybe it's working those 16 hour days.

So instead of actually doing something yourself...you head to Tman to air your grievances and moan......did you need reassurance from Tman folks? Sounds like another insecure Tman keyboard warrior. Here...you want some advice....contact your local law enforcement. See....pretty easy tough guy.

Well Ltrman, when your 127 miles from home at work it though to do anything about it. As far as making a post on trapper man I figured it's something that is going to become more and more common as drones become cheaper and in wider use. So it the topic is discussed here it will be in people's minds and they will think about what they are legal to do or if they don't care have a rough plan and are not caught flat footed.

Looks like we have yet another big talker that opens his mouth before thinking it asking questions. Another drone operator that thinks he can do whatever he wants with us drone perhaps? Or maybe just another overly sensitive product of today's soft body and mind weak product of society?

Exactly.

Funny how all the pro dron gus know they can't fly over government buildings and many tracks of state forest and are ok with that but feel like they have the right to fly over private property and do as they please. Sure if they are respectful don't hang out and stay at a Good height. But don't be surprised when and if operated rud and disrespectful if you get a reaction you don't like.

I'm guessing they are the same that like common sense gun control, don't see why anyone wants an AR 15, and would be happy if all semi automatic guns were banned as long as they can keep their model 60 Marlin, auto 5, and 1100 Remington.

Classic example of boot lickers, mixed with entitlement mentally for a lot of them. No concept of respect personal space, consequences.

Reminds me of a kid In middle school at recess. Bully thought he could yell, scream, posture, and come over and push younger smaller kids around. I guess he thought his size and age would be intimidating and every kid would cower, like all the other kids over the year, or at worst it would be a come on man do something with a push then push back and forth with neither willing to throw a punch and leave him to feel like a big tough guy. Funny thing I watch take place several times over the year. But he was surprised when he finally got around to one guy that didn't wait for the push to contact and had thrown his punch as the bully stepped in to push adding all his forward momentum to impact force of the well thrown and placed punch promptly dropping him in what quick became a puddle of blood.

He was crying as he was carried away hands catching the blood flowing out of his mouth and nose and almost in shock and keep repeating why did you hit me over and over. Actions create reaction. Never saw that guy bully anyone again at least until I left that school system mid sophomore year. I got 3 days of in school suspension since the recess attendents had seen the pattern many times and were happy to see different results this time vouched for me that the bully got what he deserved. Looking back the kid was troubled had a bad home life and all but as a kid on the playground that was never even though about.

That type talks big then needs goverment force to back them up when their poor behavior doesn't get the desired results. They bow down to the same government force while talking about the constitution and their rights as long as they can walk on others rights.

Today parents would get on to their kids and cower to the school staff, the bully would end up protected and kid being pushed around punished. It's all part of the program to build a weak society that won't stand up to the government force. It's sad so many refuse to see it .

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/17/24 10:34 PM

I know a guy that sold his pressure washing business and got into the drone business. He does everything from deer recovery to roof and building surveys. He’s even done property mapping. Business is good for him right now. Pretty sure is someone shot his drone down, he would win in court and whoever shot it would be doing time and paying restitution.
I’ve learned that those that “are capable” don’t ever talk about it or post about it, they just do it. Lots of keyboard warriors on every site. Or either those just looking for attention.

No problem. Just petition the FFA to remove your property from class G airspace. I'm not sure it has ever been done; but if anyone can do it ,it would be you. If it does nothing else, it should keep your boys out of Juvie. smirk

Call a good friend. A GOOD friend would slip up the road in his gillie suit with a shotgun. Blast the drone out of the air. Then leave. Try proving who shot down the drone then !!! LOL!

And I'm sure your friend is above roof level at least 50 and not hanging around people homes unwanted. Again two very different things. I don't say a thing about all the small air craft that practice over the farm all summer long. On guy always turning off his engine gliding for a while then firing it back up. Irritating to listen to but not causing any problems . He stays at above 400' . Drone Is fine it it stays away from the house and at above the roof and tree height. Infact I think that's part of the requirements. It's catching them and running through the channels that make it hard to impossible to inforce.

Seems to be a major disconnect for many of the members on here. There is a difference between running droend for fun and business in respectable manor vs flying one low around someones house and yard at window level and hanging out looking around uninvited. Some sort of mental block I guess.

Exactly,. But it was likely a one off thing of someone playing with their new toy. As far as line of sight ant the operator being close there was no way they were line of sight the way my house is in a valley. I own everything behind us a few hund yards and everything to the south 1/2 mile. Two houses can be seen from mine and one I'd my dad's the other a good friend. All the ground to the north300 acre's was bought by an Amish guy and the couple hundred to the east is another family that's had it for about 100 years. It's not from anyone around here and they were not very close or would have been seen if they could have Been within sight of the drone.

I'm not a drone operator tough guy. But my first reaction to an issue involving my family isn't to run to Tman to whine about it and be consoled. You have a phone that works more than 127 miles? Why not use it. The only snowflake is apparently you....who needs approval from strangers before you protect your family from scary things...imagined or not.

I would let it pass and quickly don a headnet, grab a 12 ga & some # 7 1/2 shotshells, get off the property and try to intercept it right then and there, or study it's flight route for a future encounter.

Just once inside 45 yds, and it's lights out on that sucker, and they won't be finding it either.

Police are sympathetic to complaints of drones, police don't like cameras. First admendment auditors are using drones and handheld cameras in the popular police harassment tactic that pays, when officers step out of bounds with civil rights.
If I take out your drone for what I feel is peeping or spying. Do what you feel you need to do. I'll be waiting on my property for you to show up, and give me a dirty look. I'll still be there when police show up. I will have called my attorney already. How much fight you putting up for your drone? I know how much I'll put up to protect my privacy on my property.
Just a matter of time for laws to catch up with tecnology.

Re: Drone flying around the house!!! - 03/18/24 02:10 PM

Only personally know a few guys with decent drones but they all have them insured with the manufacturer. As such the operator doesnt need to go looking for it as a new one will
show up on their door step within a couple of days of filing a claim. But the company does know the drones exact last/current gps location along with detailed video footage that was being recorded and the flight records of what/when the operator was doing with controller. Just keep in mind that in those cases things definately might not be financially/legally in your favor if you get caught shooting it down AND the operator was legally within the FAA rules as the manufacturer with deep pockets may pursue that recovery to the fullest legal extent just out of business principle

I imagine police response for drones is like everything else and greatly varies by area. Most departments around here of any size have police drones that they use so not sure what type of response I'd personally expect if I called them saying a drone was hovering around me. A few years ago it seemed common to see drones flying all over in the summer but the fad seems to be over. I think most were pretty cheap and likely belonged to the neighbor kids. But with most high tech stuff the price point is dropping and the quality increasing. I very seldom see a drone flying around anymore as most are up in the 3-400 foot range and cruising along at a good clip.
