Maumee River and walleyes.

I'm hoping to spend a day or two on the Maumee next week, been doing a lot of research.

Anyone here partake in spring fishing there? Any recommended areas or a good bait shop to pick up last minute necessities.

The Maumee walleye run gets very crowded. When it's good, people fish shoulder to shoulder and nearly constantly cross lines.

At the Maumee run, my maternal grandfather had a an Asian guy, crowd him and cross lines with him 3 times while he was bringing in a walleye, causing him to lose the fish. Each time, the Asian guy said "So sohhry. So sohhry." and then moved in close and did it again, trying to cast into the spot my grandfather was hooking them in. The fourth time, my grandfather shoved the Asian in and told him "So sorry." The Asian got the message and left.

That's the only time I knew my grandfather to get mad. He was always polite and courteous in my experience. He was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 10th Armored Division during World War II. The 10th was nicknamed the Tiger Division. My grandfather lied about his age and enlisted at 16 and was Europe soon after his 17th birthday. He is my favorite person and the one I most want to see again after I die.

One hook rule right now. No treble hooks on a lure.

Chest waders /life jacket if you're blown off the lake, that's the place to be if they're spawning.

Walleye fillets are worth fighting for.

It's called combat fishing up there.

Bring a small boat and it won't be so bad, at least a pair of waders. I went to the Sandusky river probably 40 years ago in Fremont, never again. Good luck!

Been that way for years, no snagging. DNR everywhere they will catch you!

If you have a boat you can catch the walleyes on the reefs about 45 min east of the maumee. PM me and can give you more information. If the river is your choice there are plenty of folks selling jigs and twister tails along the river. Also Maumee Bait and tackle or Janns Net Craft are close by. Its a single hook only and fish have to be hooked in the mouth no snagging. Plenty of game wardens to keep everyone honest. Did it for a lot of years but the crowds and the craziness gets old quick. Jig fishing the reefs is a lot more fun and very few fish are not hooked in the mouth.

If I was bringing a boat I'd stay on the D.

I'm going with a guide for a few days on the Detroit River and will try some shore fishing for a few days.

I realize it's combat fishing, it can get crazy in other areas of the country too. It's all part of the fun
