Average for me is probably about 8-10 inches, though I don't worry about it too much. Sometimes I don't dig at all and just kick a hole in the bank if its soft enough. I'll then either pin the bait in the back or shove a wad of grass in the hole over the bait so a coon has to work a little for it. I don't want to spend a lot of time digging!

I think it’s important to angle it upward to keep the bait from washing out how deep I feel is less important.

I don't dig holes. I just take my tile spade and shove It vertically into the bank. Then I just wiggle it back and forth just like you were planting a tree. Drop in your bait and kick the slot closed. Place 2 traps one at each side of the slot.

Deep enough that a coon can't reach up in there and pull the bait out.
