Oddball Gun Question - Springfield 1911 Conversion - 04/24/24 07:36 PM

Former coworker stopped in today with a unique piece. I'd never heard of them let alone seen one.

Springfield 1911 A2 SASS Conversion.

Unit fits on top of a 1911 and converts it into something similar to a TC Encore.

His is in 7mm BR.

He's currently looking for the magazine that works with the setup, it seems to acts as the barrel lock/release. He didn't know it took a special one when he bought it, just thought it seemed cool and the price was right. Only made these for a year or 2. Told him the mags are gonna be scare as hens teeth.

Anyone seen these before or have a possible lead on one of the mags for one?

Stock photo I found online (I didn't think to take a pic of his when he was here)

Quick search on GB and Ebay didnt show much. Kind of a crazy setup. Slides on any 1911 frame. Came in calibers from 22 to 358 Win

Looks like a cross between a 1911 and a Luger.

Above is mine in the center in 308. I bought mine right off Springfield Armory back in the early 2000’s with 3 barrels and a storage case. I have the 308, 223 and 44 magnum with mine. These guns hurt you and draw blood. The 1911 frame was not designed to shoot the recoil.
Good luck finding a magazine. Not many of these were made. Pachmayr made a similar single shot but the magazine is different. The magazine on the Springfield is the lock and break open release

If you can't find one, you might be able to reach out to Springfield Armory and get a set of drawings so he could have one made. A fella I know did that with a Smith and Wesson part that is long discontinued and unobtainable. They first said he wouldn't be able to make the part but when he explained he was a machinist in the aerospace industry and had access to any machine tool he might need they sent it to him. He actually said that he machined to tolerances that made their machining look like it was marked with chalk and cut with a chainsaw, the person he was talking to apparently got a kick of that and that's when he agreed to send him the drawings.
