Can't afford to change my oil

Can't afford to change my oil - 07/09/24 08:23 PM
This is stupid. I need to service my 2018 3500 ram. If I buy oem part to do oil and fuel filter change it's $400.00 bucks. And I have to do the work. Dispose of the old oil ect
OR
I take it to town and let them do it with the same parts and oil for $250.00 plus they wash the windows and vacuum the truck. Something seems wrong here.
I can't hardly stand to pay someone to do something that I can do. But at the same time I'm not going to pay a extra $150.00 for the " privilege " to crawl under that thing either!

OEM parts a marked up a ridiculous amount just buy a good brand on sale and a quality filter for it. If they can do it for less they are cutting corners somewhere I’d say.

Idk about where you are. But, my wife schedules an oil change, she drops her car off, gets a loaner and they call her when it’s done. She goes back when she can later that day and gets it. Super easy.

That works if you're in the same town. I'm not so have to wait on mine while they change the oil. I've found if you're the first or near first appointment for the day you get in and out fairly quick. Otherwise you're gonna sit there for 2-3 hours.

Re: Can't afford to change my oil - 07/09/24 09:29 PM
Yeah, that’s a bunch of crap having to wait that long. She just has to drive to the dealership about 15 miles away and then come home, she can work remotely so she would just work from there. But yeah, I am not waiting that long.

Re: Can't afford to change my oil - 07/09/24 09:29 PM
I'm guessing it's a diesel that probably takes 15ish quarts of synthetic oil.
Dealers can do the oil change cheaper, because they buy oil in huge quantities, and they rely on upsells to make money as well from oil changes.
If it's a diesel.....does that price include fuel filters as well?

Re: Can't afford to change my oil - 07/09/24 09:42 PM
Yes it is diesel. Dealership priced the oil filter and the two fuel filters at $288.00 auto zone price the 13 qts of rotella oil at $120.00 total is $408.00

You can buy all that stuff plus an air filter at rock auto for under 200 bucks .
All mid grade to premium grade too , not the cheap stuff . Your truck won't know if it came frome the dealer or not

I guess I am the only one that buys and stockpiles oil and filters. With 6 vehicles, 3 tractors, 4 atv/utvs, lawnmowers, tillers and a multitude of things that take gear oil - I constantly am changing oil and checking transmissions and hydraulic fluids - I watch sales constantly and stock up as I know its something that is going to need done in a few months or next year........

Looks like the regular price for Kirkland full synthetic is $20/5 qt jug shipped to my door free just like you said! I’m gonna have to keep an eye out for the sale and order several changes worth. Even that regular price is about as good as you’ll find anywhere for synthetic. Happy trapping! ScottW

I don't even have a Costco membership a co-worker does , as do some friends and family
when the oil sale comes around my co-worker is always watching for oil , I start shelling out 20s to cover the cost he has it shipped to my door.
I need some more 5w20 next time the sale rolls around
it was $32.xx for 10 quarts last time I ordered. that was shipped.

The free oil change on my last truck they forgot or did not tighten a skid plate bolt it took a bit to figure it out. The oil change guy in many garages is the bottom of the totem pole entry level position. I worked at a Lincoln dealer many years ago the kid put brake fluid in the master cylinder and ruined the rubbers on the brake hydraulics.
He said, “ all hydronic fluid is the same” just before he was fired.

About 30 years ago my mom was moving from Washington to Virginia. Before she drove across the Country she had her oil changed at Firestone.
On her way down Lolo Pass from Idaho into Montana her car engine siezed up. The tow truck drive said her oil drain plug was missing.
Firestone put her up in a motel for a couple of days, flew her to Virginia, paid to ship her belonings to Virginia, put a new engine in her car in Missoula then shipped her car to her. They even paid for her rental car for a few weeks in Virginia.
Glad I wasn't that guy who changed her oil

I do all my oil changes .
Ditto.
I had a 87 Dodge Ram 50 sport pickup ( Mitsubishi Mighty Max ) with the 2.6L Mitsu engine. One of the few vehicles I bought brand new.
I was the
only person ever to remove the drain plug since the factory installed it. That drain plug had been removed over 50 times by me changing the oil during the time I drove it. Every time I used a good quality 6 point box end wrench to remove and replace it.
The drain plug had almost no wear. No scrapes , marks , grip wear and nice clean threads. The only wear was paint missing off in spots on the drain plug. Not too shabby seeing how it had been in and out that many times.
I've seen drain plugs ruined on cars with less than 10k miles on them due to knuckleheads in oil change places.
