Steer got me in the bull pen, Much pain

Steer got me in the bull pen, Much pain - 08/10/24 04:07 AM

Trying to load our last steer into the trailer.

He was not willing to load so I got in the 30'x40' bull pen to turn him and push him to load.

He turned on me ignoring the White hvy. Fiberglass rod to the nose. [Linked Image]

Back of my leg two days later...Much pain.

You were lucky. I know of two people who did the same as you that lost their lives. Hope you heal up quickly!

No fun.
Punchin cows is all fine and dandy until one punches back. That is why we all should leave it to the younger fellas. 1 they git outta the way faster and 2 if they fail that, they heal up faster.

Not a cattle hand here, but I do recall swapping out the last Angus bull my grandfather had when I was a kid. The gentle fellow put his head into the bucket of the tractor so hard when he realized what was happening that he rendered himself almost unconscious. Made it easier to get him to the "back 40".

Sorry for your pain.

But, for your next selfie, you might consider a pair of boxers....

Wow you were lucky. Maybe I don't want to bother putting in fence so I can get cows. Last thing I want is my wife or kids geting that cloes to them.

Working cattle isn’t for the faint of heart. Lots of the pain I now experience are from cattle that needed an attitude adjustment. Eric

My wife tends to forget their animals and not pets, I remind her all the time. I carry a fiberglass pole and an old aluminum 34" bat when moving them. I have had to use the skidsteer a time or two also. Had a bull try to beat up the skidsteer once, was an interesting tussle as I was sitting in it. Get well.

That is why I don’t mess with critters I can’t drop with a shovel in an emergency. My buddy had a pet bull go after him bottle fed never any issues then boom it was on. It was pinning him against the barn wall and pushing him along the wall, lucky they came to a door and he was pushed out of the doorway and got clear.

Had one neighbor get killed by a bull in 1985 and 2 others were Injured in separate instances with bulls.the one guys father came running down to my house and told me to bring the gun the bull had his boy pinned down .by the time I got there his boy had gotten free and away from the bull but was sore for couple weeks.the other instance bull had a guy down and if he hadn't had a pocket knife with him to be able to stab the bull in the eyes and face he probably wouldn't be here today.

Last year we had an incidence where a neighbors "pet" bull turned on him. UPS driver found him as the bull was tossing him around like a rag doll. Figured he had been dead for several hours. I help other neighbors load cattle from time to time and after that if he has a difficult one, it usually get's a bullet. Glad it wasn't any worse Scott.

I limped in to the house...made arrangements With a Butcher/Friend that I'd shoot it...Gut it and bring it to him but it had to be the next day, because of his schedule. so I packed it with ice , 4 big bags

Ive fought many hogs between 300-600 lbs. you only win when/if they decide you can. Scariest I ever had was being between two 600+ lb tusked boars. I was able to go up into rafters right before their fight took out a concrete wall.

Re: Steer got me in the bull pen, Much pain - 08/10/24 03:53 PM

No kidding up state I had a hog probably over 350 lb knocked me off my feet with literally yo no effort. Lucky for me I was out in the open and she turned out to just be trying to rub on my legs wanting scratched. After hitting my legs over enthusiastic and I hit the dirt I looked back concerned to find her laying on her side scooting around oinking waiting for a belly scratching.

Re: Steer got me in the bull pen, Much pain - 08/10/24 04:06 PM

Scott I wish there was something I could have done but it's a little late now. The big whack worked maybe 9 out of 10 times I decided when I was young and working in a big stockyard. The 1 time it doesn't, you need a quick side step and a enough room to make a tight circle because 2 legs turn faster than 4.

I am sure never gonna say I never got laid up, I got laid up enough times I had to developed a plan b and even a plan c.

Re: Steer got me in the bull pen, Much pain - 08/10/24 04:11 PM

UpstateNY- a hog has some explosive power that is hard to believe even when you have seen it. Nothing to underestimate.

Anyone ever had a bronc bite down on yer shoulder and toss ya like a rag doll? It happens so quick that someone has to explain what happened once you start coming to.

Re: Steer got me in the bull pen, Much pain - 08/10/24 11:19 PM

Lol sounds like an old timer. . The one
That knocked me down was my stupidity trying to be a friendly person. I was going to buy some queens and just before the guys drive his neighbor across the street had a pig loose in th front yard. So p walked over to knock on the door to let them.k ow their pig was out. As I walked up the drive that pig linked and ran at me full tilt and my side step was not fast enough. When I saw it was friendly I scratched her and walked up to the door. Fellow looked at me weird then at the pig and smiled just say it's not my pig.

Turned out to be the queen breaders pig that had got loose.

I worked for a crazy dairy farmer as a teenager. Every cow he sold he told the buyer, "That's the one that killed my wife." He told me his wife had such high blood pressure that one day she just exploded while sitting in her favorite chair.

He had a bull that was always trying to kill me. Or so it seemed to my young mind. One day I was moving some hay bales, had them in the tractor bucket. The bull got aggressive with me on the tractor. I waited until he was blocking my path, lifted the bucket up and dropped it on his head. The hydraulics on that old tractor were shot and that bucket came down fast. I thought I killed the dang thing and was scared I'd have to work for the crazy farmer forever just to pay for it.

The bull recovered and didn't mess with me as much after that, at least not when I was on the tractor.

Seen a sow pig stick her nose between a buddy's legs and toss him over the sty fence like he didn't weigh anything, And he was a big guy. I told him he was lucky she didn't just bite a fist-sized chunk out of him .

That kinda thing is hard to forget and yeah- way too scary to laugh at for a while. I forgot his name but there used to be a guy that would enter some rodeos and he only had one arm. He was out b4 me in the BB riding and I leaned over the chute to help him cinch down his riggin. That ol Kephart horse grabbed me and flung me out into the arena so fast I had no idea what had just happened.

The one armed guy accused me of wanting to look like him. 4 hours and 5 drinks later I decided I night just live after all.

Ain’t never liked horses. Got stuck watching one for a friend as a teen. That dang horse grabbed my forearm and about jerked my arm out of socket. I swear I was bruised for over a month.

Never minded cows, ours down here are pretty tame. First time in Kansas I learned not all cows are the same and turkeys use them as bodyguards. Those cows out there will chase you down and I believe would kill you.

You are supposed to go around them. A guy is a lot better off getting run over when he is young. I was run over five times in one day, in Fargo. The fifth bull stepped on my right arm and broke both bones just above the wrist joint and dislocated them both. 330 is past young. Hope you get to feeling better quick.

One of my grandmothers had a aunt killed by a hog. My grandpa who raised cattle was a firm believer in if a cow seemed the least big aggressive, she made a one way trip to the sale barn in short order Most of the cows were tame enough that my grandpa could scratch them all on the head. Not saying that was wise, as obviously any large animal is going to win if it decides it wants to.

Re: Steer got me in the bull pen, Much pain - 08/11/24 08:31 PM

I worked a year for Pat Byrne out of Mill Iron. Fought the Lewistown HS rodeo three years in a row. Grass Range HS show. I was in HS then. I worked in eight states and Canada. MT, ND, SD, WY, MN, TX, OK, & KS. I lived in Gt Falls then. My Dad always told me I would not be able to walk across the street when I was 40 years old. I made a point of telling him I could when I was 40. I went to four bull fighting schools. One was in Mesquite TX at Neil Gays old out door arena. I flew down and back from Gt Falls. I called my Dad to pick me up at the airport in Gt Falls when I landed. He live in town. When He showed up I told him he could get my bag or we would just leave it. I was pretty well beat up. He told me where the PU was and I turned and headed that way. He caught me with my bag before I got there. [Linked Image]
