Meeting famous people - 10/14/24 11:25 PM

Anyone on here met any celebrities? Not just seen them in person, but actually met and spoken to any?

Myself and some other coaches in my county got to go onto the field pre-game for a Red Sox game as guests of Jackie Bradley Jr. the year they last won the World Series in 2018 I believe. Got to meet the whole team and spoke with multiple Yankees players while they were taking BP.

Met the Jets Safety Chuck Clark during his rookie season with the Ravens on a cruise ship. My oldest was wearing a Va Tech shirt and he introduced himself having just gone there. Played dodgeball with him. Great guy.

Had a beer with Dave Matthews in Charlottesville.

Met Penn from Penn and Teller by chance at an amusement park.

Went backstage and hung out with the band Korn for 20 min or so. A guy’s father, who worked for me, was the life coach for their band. Pretty reserved dudes.

Can’t think of any one else, but I’ve never had a bad experience meeting any of them contrary to what you read about.

Went fishing with Ken Griffey Sr on a two day trip went I was 10 or 11. Dad reffed basketball with our mail man who happened to be good friends with Griffey.

I met Mr McFeeley the delivery/ mailman from Mr Roger’s Neighborhood. He was doing an appearance at the Fayette County Family Funfest. Additionally, at the time, I got a job being Smokey Bear at the last minute as we had a friend who worked for the DCNR and he needed someone. Was a lot of fun! Kids loved it!

Maybe this fits your scenario. In 1976, I went to the American Royal 4-H Conference in Kansas City. The banquet speaker was Jesse Owens. We were allowed to go up after his speech and get an autograph if we wished. I got his autograph on the banquet program. I likely thanked him for it, so maybe that counts as speaking to him. grin

About 25 years ago one night when WWF was in town, we were hanging out at the local strip club. Undertaker, the Godwins and a couple others were all sitting at a big table, each had their own escort. After a few shots I got the courage to walk up behind Taker, tap him on the shoulder and asked if I could shake his hand. He stands up and we shake hands, he really is a big dude. Then the other wrestlers stick their hands out and I shake em but didn’t really care. I turn around to go back and there’s a line up of guys behind me….lol
Super nice guys. I had to tell the wife that one though.

Re: Meeting famous people - 10/15/24 12:07 AM

You guys probably don’t know them, but I’ve met two celebrities in my life, both when I was a kid. The first was Sally Starr, a local children’s television host and minor celebrity. Back then my dad was an air traffic controller at the local regional airport. The Blue Angels had performed that day and I was with my dad and mom at the after party. Sally Starr was there and she was drunk and she was hitting on the blue angel pilots. LOL

The second was Soupy Sales, a minor celebrity comedian. My brother and I were selling golf balls that we salvaged out of the ponds on the golf course. We’d clean them up and display them in egg cartons near one of the tee offs. Soupy Sales was a regular there and he always tried to haggle us down on the price of the balls. We figured a famous guy like that was probably wealthy and we considered him a cheapskate.

I've met Paul Neuman briefly , shook his hand. He used to involved in racing and seen him at the dealership that sponsored his cars.

I've met Robert Vaughn briefly , shook his hand. He used to live one town away.

I took a half hour ride in a car with Antonio Farcus ( original 'huggy bear' ) from Starky&Hutch.

I am 66 and a half. I don't recall ever meeting someone "famous".
I am 66 and a half. Maybe I just can't remember.
I have met and gotten to know a number of people who I consider heroes, either from what they have done that actually matters in life, or who helped me become a man, which to me supersedes any "famous" celebrity or sports icon.
Carlos Hathcock comes to mind. He never considered himself a hero nor a celebrity nor famous. He would say to me that he was just doing his job.

I did some work for a pretty wealthy guy from Los Angeles once. He told me to always remember they go to the bathroom same as the rest of us. That has kept pretty well grounded when meeting guys like a guvnor or some sports athlete or coach. They are just guys.

I can’t disagree with any of that. Certainly never said I idolized them, I’m always just fascinated by folks who know others that a lot of folks have heard about for any number of reasons or the path that life takes to be introduced to folks like that.

I would say personally knowing ‘White Feather’ is pretty dang cool. I’d hs e to assume he was a man’s man with very regimented beliefs based on what I’ve read about him.

Tyler Perry Studios has been a client going on eight years now. I was with The Walking Dead for three seasons. Done a few other movie gigs.

NDA aside I honestly can't say whether any of the folks I met and meet are famous or not because frankly, I don't care. Seriously I could rattle off names but they're people just like the rest of us some good some bad.

Re: Meeting famous people - 10/15/24 12:58 AM

We get some “famous” folks that come down to quail hunt, but we don’t advertise or mention it due to returning clientele.
I will say this, most all act like everyone on here. They have the same interest we do. They have families and dogs and will talk about them. The only thing that makes them different, is us.
My son has met some seriously important folks…the kind that have their own bodyguards and protection details, lol. He said even those guys want to talk about hunting, dogs, children and tell you about their grandchildren. They want to know the best place to get fried chicken or catfish, lol.
I will say, they are good tippers too!!

Met and talked to yogi Berra, I had no idea who he was but he was at our local high-school football game my dad said go talk to him and get his auto graph, I got his auto graph on the paper with the players name on it. I was young he asked if I played any sports and baseball talk began. By the end I still didn't really know who he was but I figured out he knew baseball lol.. came home and looked through my cards and I had a few of his.

Nope, truth.
However, I could give 2 craps about being friends with anyone " famous".
Long as they are humble/ down to earth, not bragging about thier fame/ fortune I'll treat them like anyone else.

Met GW Bush while elk hunting in Utah in 2012. He was hunting on Hunt Oil’s property, bordering where we were hunting. We were coming off the mountain, and came up on his SUV going up the hill. My guide and Bush’s guide were friends, and stopped to compare elk hunting notes. He’s a lot shorter than I would have guessed.

Me and some coworkers hung out with Pete Rose at a company managers meeting.

Not famous here but met one on one with Dr Tony Ryan and did some cabinet work for him. He was a famous Irish billionaire businessman and owned a horse farm in Lexington.

Medalark Lenen and Curley kneel when I was about 6.

Clark Kellogg. Met him in the Buckeye locker room after they beat the Iowa Hawkeyes. About 1981?

Did a bunch of work for a playboy model. She built a house here and the builder would say she is coming to town this week so the trades would show up to get a glimpse. She never showed.

Outside of rodeo stars (8 time world clamps & my boy hangs out with the son of a man with 6) I've met a few celebs and sports stars. Karl Malone & Toby Keith (RIP) were cool cats and would visit with a guy and even ask him questions like you do a new acquaintance. Rick Perry wants to know about any trophy buckle I wear to a church function.

I met Jim Carrey and the Baldwin brothers at a party in Connecticut. Alec got angry that I was off talking to a woman he thought belonged to him. I've sold Mike Tyson pigeons and talked to him a few times for a couple of hours. Bone Crusher used to stay over at my house, when we were kids, during the Summer and write me letters during the school year, because his family was to poor to let him make long distance calls. Pete Rose's son Pete Junior was on my first soccer team and I met Pete and Johnny Bench, who went to our games. The Iran Sheik used to go to Iranian picnics we went to in Cincinnati. The Iron Sheik's daughter is my age and we would play together. The Sheik would make a muscle pose and we would hang off of his arms.

Re: Meeting famous people - 10/15/24 02:11 AM

For years I did discounted guide rates for the surrounding county fairs by me. A lot of the money taken in supports FFA and 4H. So it was a way to give back. A lot of acts went out for just 2 or 3 hours as time to relax and chill before a show.
Through a lot of pro staff obligations, I flew all over the country for grand openings of Cabela’s, Bass Pro, Reddings, sportsmen warehouse, and so on. Some “celebrities “ just rushed in/out like they were someone important. Most would hang out in the employees break room between autographs and just be down to earth good people.

For the decade I worked as a manufacturer rep in spring/fall goods, had a few I worked with. I still carry the pocket knife Zach Brown gave me. Met just about everyone you see on the Discovery Channel reality shows at SHOT Show. They are a big draw. Dave Turin and Freddy from gold rush are awesome people. Hoffmann…well worse in person.

The absolute worst experience was the kids from Duck Dynasty. If Phil would have seem Willie and Jason pushing and cussing at people in the isles at Shot Show, he would kicked both those boys in the sack.

My absolute favorite is Ted Nugent. He lied in a video about using an optic on his bow and I asked him about it at the Milwaukee Sports show. Saw it in an editing glitch. We played it back in slow motion and you could see it. He went absolutely nuts and wanted me thrown out. Years later, I guided him on a local lake. I couldn’t resist and brought it up. I enjoyed the entertainment value of it

I was in Arizona back in the 80's visiting my cousin. He said "you listen to Alice Cooper". I said sure I like a lot of his music. He told me that's his next door neighbor. We went over and said Hello. I hardly recognized him without his makeup and stage clothes. What a nice guy. He sent me tickets and backstage passes to his next concert and me and my cousin went. I had a blast. He was a real down to earth kind of man.

Re: Meeting famous people - 10/15/24 10:06 AM

Have meet a lot of famous people over the years Greg Gagne was my dads cousin and was here a lot when I was a kid along with a lot of those other old time wrestlers, never could fall into all the TV pretend bad blood shown on the tube because it was a hard sell when you had them sitting around the house drinking beer half drunk singing dirty songs together

Hubert Humphrey was also a cousin of my dads and my little brothers god father he also
Got after the VA when my dad started getting sick back when he was governor and they didn’t want to provider him with benefits he deserved

Met Rod Carew, Tone Olivia and several other players but the best was Kirby Puckett who I meet coming out of Abbat NW after he had his eye injury, my mother who was a huge fan was in the same hospital (why I was there) and I went up and asked for his autograph and he went up with me to her room and sat and talked with her for over an hour about baseball and gave her an autograph personally hugging her and wishing her well, made what w e didn’t know were her last few months the best

Seems I am related to several other famous people so have meet them and have worked in the service industry for a good many years a well, most of them were great people a very few were not and some were just odd

Re: Meeting famous people - 10/15/24 11:11 AM

Was playing gold at a local club. We got to the 7th or 8th hole and caught up to the guys ahead of us who were waiting on the guys in front of them. My friend goes "I know that guy from somewhere. Where do I know him from/" It took us until the 10th hole before we realized it was Alice Cooper. Like was said above. Very cool dude, and a heck of a golfer. When we were loading our bags in our car this fella walks up and hands us 8 tickets and backstage passes to his show at a local fair. I didn't tell my wife, only that we had scored tickets and a special surprise. We were sitting backstage when he walked back and started talking to us. Our wives were star struck. His daughter was on the tour with him as the nurse for his "kill/suicide" parts of his show. My wife asked her how she liked being the daughter of him. She looked at my wife and said "How many daughters do you know that would take a grinder to their crotch region for their dads show?" She was a hoot.

My dad when I was about 6 or 7 caddied at a local club for extra money. He came home and said I was going with him the next day. We got there and the golfers came out and picked their caddy's for the day. This shorter fella walked up to my dad and said "you're mine for the day." He then told my dad to go get his clubs from his car. He didn't like having a caddy that didn't play with him. They ended up playing 36 holes that day and my dad never carried his clubs. I kept asking my dad if that was who I thought it was. He would just smile, but not answer me. Between rounds we went to the club house so the guys could drink a few and I would eat. He asked me what I wanted. Told him a burger and fires. He told the waitress to get me a burger and fires and to put it on his tab. She goes" No problem Mr Palmer." My dad said my face was priceless when I figured out he was caddying for Arnold Palmer. Then was really shocked when I realized the other guy was Jack Nicklas.

I've met most of the Steelers as we only lived about 29 minutes from training camp in the 70/80's. The only one I really got to talk to was Tony Dungy.

My wife is an artist and did a lot of shows in the Hamptons, she met a lot of them. Alan Alda, Jane Seymour, Diane Sawyer and a bunch of others, some bought her paintings, She said Alan Alda was very nice, and Diane Sawyer wasn't, lol, my daughter taught Jane Seymours grand daughter and met her at school functions, Rod Stuart bought a summer home by us and we saw him at a school concert once, but he moved on....

My old man was at a rest stop restroom and was standing at the urinals with Johnny Cash, they exchanged pleasantries, but the old man had no clue who Johnny was. He finally figured it out when he saw the tour bus in the parking lot..... grin

Re: Meeting famous people - 10/15/24 11:51 AM

Ok fine- I'll spill the beans- I've had supper with Gary Lephew, bucked 3 yr olds with Donny Gay, and hauled a fairly expensive horse for Cody Ohl and his business partner. Gerald Roberts made a pair of chaps for my son and way back when, Jim Shoulders put his hand on my shoulder. Of the guys my age or just older I have met and personally know Tuff, Ty, Gaffney, Sharp, Morales, and way too many more to name. Lane Frost was a good dude but so was Brent Thurman & Glenn Keeley- all gone but none forgotten.

The list of young guys that my son competed with is a who's who of the current standings and last 5 yrs of NFR & PBR finalists so I don't have enough thumb wind to list them out. BUT I can say that myself enlisted Jess and Ty Popes parents along with Trey Holstrom's dad and formed up the youth roughstock association that got them all to their first national competition. Koltin Hevelow's parents knew it was a good thing and drug their boy across state lines so he could come along too. Good ppl and we still keep in touch.

I cannot even remember all of the top hands I met back when I judged some bull ridings it would be a long list. And the list of bull fighters and barrel men (clowns) would be an impressive who's who in the world of pro rodeo and PBR celebrates.

Learned a long time ago the majority of famous people are people that just haven’t disappointed you yet, it’s better not to meet them they are better off left alone.

Another note on Griffey SR, his friend got him to be an high school basketball official. Dont think it was a long career. He was doing a JV game and my dad and Griffey;s friend was doing the varsity game after. My dad came out of the locker room and there were some kids waiting around for Griffey and had no clue who he was or even looked like. One of the kids asked my dad if he was Griffey. My dad is white, Griffey's friend is black, but they asked my dad lol.

I was sitting in McDonalds when I was in college, cramming for a test one morning. I hardly noticed the older couple that sat down across from me in the next row of booths but the guys voice jarred me out of my studies. Looking over I saw Doug and "big" Jane Moe looking right at me. Doug had recently been fired as coach of the Denver Nuggets. Jane asked me what I was studying to break the ice and we had a nice convo. This was just a couple weeks after Doug announced his own firing from the nuggets.

No other than to answer him when he asks about a bull I unloaded and what it does (spin, kick, left, or right) we have never spoken. He is a hoot tho, I know that.

Of the past PBR champs, I'd rather hang out with Mike White or Adriano Morales than anyone. Those 2 never met a stranger and will never forget a friend. Down to earth good dudes. Adiano won't admit it, but back in the day he hooked me up with the best sponsor I ever had. I'm purdy sure he can even sleep with that big smile on his face.

I met and became good friends with Wally Hilgenberg of the MN Vikings. We were both involved in Christian activities. One evening at one of those activities we were at a dinner sitting with Wally and his wife when my wife passed out. She had given blood that day. Wally and I had to carry her out to my car. It was in the winter and below zero. She came to and we went home. Missed out on the steak dinner. Wally died a few years later from Lou Gehrig's Disease. A wonderful human being.

I love professional boxing. Went to a boxing match in ND. It was televised for Saturday Night Fights. I was in the casino's cafeteria having lunch prior to the start of the fights. The table next to me was Teddy Atlas who was at one time the boxing trainer for Mike Tyson. Got to visiting with him and he said see me ringside during the fights and I'll give you a T-shirt. He was a very nice, cordial guy. Sugar Ray Leonard was there as well sitting with Teddy. Got to shake hands with him. I overheard Sugar Ray trying to convince Teddy to train a guy who was on the fight card that night. Teddy said he'd have to see him fight first. I don't know if he ever trained the guy or not. Sugar Ray seemed like a nice, likeable person too.

I have never had any interest in famous people. A few small time famous people in small homesteading circles I have meet was because I was at events they were and I was I interested in their knowledge and experience learned techniques. Not because they are famous. Joel Salatin is one and he is as genuine down to earth and as smart as they come. Anytime I'm around him it's a pleasure and I learn a lot. I have had the privilege of seeing him 3 times at events he was the key not speaker at and have gone to his farm in Swoope Virginia a day got to see thing in his books first hand. It's easier to understand seeing it than just reading about it.

Here is the kicker I would feel the same getting the opportunity to meet many of the members on here. Keith C for sure the man has his systems in place has developed his markets and I would be privileged to get some of his time and learn from him.

Ksnow would be the same learning about his skills tanning, garment making and bead work.

Jerry's woman and her side hustle.;)

boco and Ryan McCloud wilderness living, The Boss because well to many things to list.

Honestly I hesitate to list individuals just so many talented individuals I hate to leave them out but would crash the sight attempting to.

So yes I would rather get to spend time with members here than any famous people. It would be time much better spent.

I met Miss America 1970 and her court in Germany in 1972. We were waiting for our ride to go back to our barracks, after a USO show, when they walked out in the parking lot. Our rides were late. So we talked in the parking lot until our duce and a half arrived.

PF I am same way, brother. IV never understood the "fan" girl type swooning over some celebrity. Now I kinda get it. Id probably poop ma pants to get chance to meet one of the people from a self defense company called ASP. In an appropriate, platonic sort of way. wink

Love the message of self defense for everyone. That no matter your political status or religion, race. Everyone deserves the right to defend their life against violence. They educate the public in a way it's available to everyone. Anyway,I'll stop gushing now. Lol

I would probably be very nervous meeting anyone here, too. smile Just because y'all are so talented and I know I'm not anywhere near as such.

Nope, never met anyone famous, that I knew of at least.

That would probably require being around crowds, and that is WAY down on my list of things to do.

PF, you ever make it to WI, my door is open.

You could offer courses, write some books or make some videos. Maybe u tube. Sharing your knowledge and skills and make a little profit possibly.

Someday hopefully I will take you up on that. Can get some cheese and maybe shoot some grouse. Wish I still had a kennel full of English setters sometimes. .

I’m now impressed! Back when every Sunday night was spent watching bull riding, Morales was the Bomb!! That guy looked like poetry in motion on a bull. Every interview showed how thankful he was doing what he did. Seemed like a great guy!

Dang Swamp, Wayne Pearson is a name I haven’t heard in a while. He had an outdoors show back in the day and was hoot to watch!! We ran into him fishing Blackshear one weekend and he was as down to Earth as anyone. We were on a shell cracker bed and dad invited him to scoot on in and get on it. He stayed off a ways and they talked for 20min or more before he moved on looking for another bed. It wasn’t until a little later on I was watching a show and realized that was him.

One of our family members was in Trumps cabinet and knew that my wife admired Ivanka so we were invited to the White House for a 5 minute meet and greet. It turned out to be closer to 30 minutes as my wife and her hit it off. Her assistant was having some kind of neck issues that day, so Ivanka asked my wife, who is a chiropractor, if she could adjust her assistant on the office couch.

A friend of mine is movie producer in LA. He invited us out for the premier for one his movies. We walked the red carpet. Was at the afterparty and some fella walks up to me wanting to chat. Looked and sounded like a flamer so I told him to scram. My wife walked up a few minutes later and asked what David Arquett wanted. lol

Took the neighbor kid to MO years back he was a smart kid with no common sense really sadly he’s a lawyer now we thought he’d do better in life. So we stopped at a truck stop and Conway Twitty’s tour bus was there. The bus was named Twitty Bird like the cartoon character so my other buddy goes, there’s “Twitty Bird” and the kids goes where, where?

Same kid would sit up and look around at every deer crossing sign and look for deer I’d just shake my head.

I met Adam West back in 1989 and astronaut Jim Lovell in the 70's. Both guys were very cool and nice. Adam West was very funny and personable. Built like a tank too. Also kind of met Todd Rundgren walking back to our cars after a fireworks show in Hyde Park,N.Y at the Vanderbuilt mansion. Turns out he was walking right along side of us.

Wannabe Adriano was the man both on and off the back of the bull. At one time, Asriano was winning the PBR and I swear if he was 90 (which didn't happen all that often back then) and the same round you put up a 91- dude would meet you at the walk out gate and unless you got your hand up first to high 5, he would prolly wrap you up in a bear hug and lift her feet of the ground. He loves the sport, he loves others around him, and he loves America.

And he even speaks Englisj now- back when he first came up not so much.

He would show a a bull well- Jim Sharp and Michael Gaffney were about as good to watch.

Terry Don West and Tuff never looked comfortable on the back of a bull but it sure was hard to buck em off until quiting time.

Your assumption is dead on. He was a very serious man, but had a great sense of humor as well. He would laugh so hard at something I'd say until he'd start choking on his own spit, then he's say something that made the next guy do that same thing.

I knew Dick Trickle personally and he sampled food off my plate at a wild game feed at a friend's house. I accidentally bumped into Annekka De Lorenzo at a bar and restaurant. She was then the Penthouse Pet of the Year. I did not realize who she was until the bartender told me who she was. Kirk Hibbert and his son Tucker fixed us an outdoor breakfast over a campfire at our hunting camp one morning .I met Paul Dobbins at several trapping conventions. Trapstickman is a close acquaintance of mine.

Met Dick Vandyke in a bar outside of Minneapolis. He was on the wagon.

Met Richard Simmons in a hotel in Chicago. The plate on his Caddy read "R U 2 Fat"

I am so proud.
