picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/17/24 01:34 AM

hit the army navy to get some ragwool glove liners before deer season next week

walked in and they had a couple white gas stoves they said it is an old guy that finds and rebuilds the stoves then sells them to them for resale.

they had a big 3 burner and a small 2 burner

I have been looking for a stove as my LP has seen better days and I hate the little tanks and the price of them.

I figured the 2 burner for 30 bucks was worth it and bought it

anyone ever use one of these little tire pump fuel caps ?
https://www.oldcolemanparts.com/sel...5E/Filler-Cap-Tire-Valve-Brass-R261.html

I have a little pump that would make quick work of pressurizing the tank as it seems the neoprene pump gasket is usually what goes out.

I also found leather pump replacement cups that many of the videos say work better and last longer.

they fired it up for me outside the store it got to good flame and I heated some water to make tea with it when I got home.

I need to get a new can of white gas I used all mine up in lanterns

it came with about a half tank of fuel in it.

Never seen a pump like in your link.
I have a couple of those stoves, but you have to cover the wider mushroom shaped pump with your thumb, in order to pump up the pressure.
Have the old lantern also.
One stove will burn unleaded gasoline, not just white gas.
Haven't used them in years, should sell them.

I use the 2 burner when space is a little tight. Top pic warming breakfast burritos. Three burner is awesome for shore lunch during fire bans. I have a square pan that fits over two of the burners and there’s still room for the lid over third burner for warming plate. Beans cook behind square pan. I burn 91 octane with no ethanol in all my Coleman stoves and lanterns. In a pinch I’ve used mixed gas. Also used av gas last year when we ran out of regular gas.

Never seen that type of pump before. I wouldn’t trade it for the thumb pump on a pack stove. I might get one for home and cabin use. Great idea.

Got half a dozen coleman stoves here plus that many lanterns. Got a couple alcohol burners as well.

Grew up with tornadoes, hurricanes and ice storms to be expected so I won't be without a stove or lantern.

seems like just a brass fuel cap with a Schrader valve toss a bike pump on and in a pump or two you are ready to light.

yup 2 turns to the left cover hole with thumb , pump turn back to right when bottomed out when you think you have enough pressure.

more fuel = less pumping

there are 21K btu in a pound of LP

there is 125K btu in a gallon of white gas

2# of lp in the little cans is 10 dollars 42Kbtu

you get almost 3 times more in a gallon for 15 dollars than 2 little bottles for 10 it works out to almost half the price per BTU.

LP gets cheaper when you use a larger tank but the tank is a 50 dollar investment

that would be much cheaper yet

I went to propane 20 years ago. I have a Coleman two burner propane and I run it off a larger bottle with a tree and hose. I can run three things off the tree at once. As often as we loose power I am going to have a propane heater and stove.

Re: picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/17/24 04:22 AM

I have a propane and a larger bottle , the stove has seen better days , and hauling the larger bottle with is a bit of a hassle for a weekend trip with just the wife and I.

at home I have a larger outdoor stove I use for fish boils and things that need a big burner.
I have 4-5 20# bottles and they run me around 16 dollars to get them filled
I run the grill off those as well

this was to have a nice compact ready to go stove for a weekend or 3-4 day fishing trip just the wife and I.

I like the looks of that motor canoe also.

Glad to find that Old Coleman Web Site. I bookmarked it.

Ive always wanted one of those just never found a good deal on em for a $20 bill I'd buy them out. I've been using Coleman's little lol single burner griddle wok combo thing a couple years and love it.

I’ve been running 91 octane in my Coleman’s for over 30 years and never had an issue. If you can’t find no ethanol it will work but I’d use white gas before ethanol. If you do get stuck using ethanol be sure to empty the tank as soon as you can. Then pump tank up and run it wide open out of the stove to empty the generator tube. Run good fuel through as soon as possible to clean out tube. If storing for a long time I treat the gas with starbrite enzime treatment.

Good eye! It’s a 52/53, but it’s a 3hp, self contained fuel tank. 5.5s were same color but remote tanks. 52/53 were the same model #. 52 was the first year of that motor. 54 and newer have year specific model numbers and different colors. I have several of that motor from 52-67. Great little carry motors and the first motor I used as a kid so I kinda have a sweet spot for them.

A buddy in Canada scored me this little guy this summer,1956 real good paint. Had it running in 10 minutes.

You’ll love that stove for that purpose! You can store fish breading, oil, paper towels and paper plates inside as well as a can of beans and tongs. Real self contained unit. You need to take all the stuff out of the bottom of the stove when in use, even a bic lighter, don’t ask!

Extra thumb pumps are easy to find and I usually have an extra along but rarely need it. Lack of use is the hardest on the pumps. They usually can be brought back to life by removing and dabbing with a little cooking oil or spraying WD in little oil hole.

I’d recommend practicing lighting the stove at home a few times b4 you head out. Some stoves like the lighting lever all the way up to light, some 3/4 etc. they all need a crazy amount of air during lighting so pump it up often when getting it to go. Once it’s hot and starts vaporizing the fuel it takes less air, and you turn lighting lever down/off. 3/4 tank of fuel leaves more room for compressed air than full tank so it runs longer without pumping. If I’m going to use it for more that one or two fire ups on a trip I’ll fill it all the way and just pump more often till fuel runs down and makes more room for air.

Thanks , we get 91 e-free at the pump here all the kwik Trips in our area have a separate handle for it on the pump, I run it in all my small engines , chainsaws , boat motors

I use startron towards the end of every season not always if we are mid season and gassing up the boat regular

Cool! Exactly what I do. If I’m at a station with a shared hose, I run some in the truck b4 filling Jerry cans.

I used to do that before we got designated hoses for 91 no-e 2-3 gallons for the truck , then whatever I was mixing for the saws.

the little pressure pump would catch then not , I took it apart , just putting oil down the maintenance hole only seems to oil one side of the leather cup

I had been watching videos and messaged a little oil into the rest of the leather cup and , now it pumps quite well

found a little cotton bag something came in , got a long lighter , tongs , spatula , 2 forks and 2 spoons in that little sack and it hides in the stove well . also ripped up some towel and added a rag that doubles as a pot holder and I found my little fuel funnel and added that to the stove as well

all it needs is a pot that stores in the dry goods box

I heated some more water and cooked lunch on it yesterday to get more run time make sure all is good

the hardware store my son works at sells white gas so I bought a can figure it will store better like that and when it is getting used a lot I can run 91

I have a spare leather kit in the cart when I get around to ordering it.

Re: picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/18/24 02:36 PM

Awesome.
The Leather pump cups usually just need to soak up oil and swell a bit. The new plastic cups get brittle and are harder to bring back to life once they get hard, but both are easy to replace in the field. Maybe that’s what was going in the little cloth bag, an extra pump? lol

Yeah I went through a phase when I couldn't pass up a good camp stove or lantern. Not sure Ive used many of them but I like them setting there.

the cloth bag didn't come with the stove
it was from some coffee thing my wife bought I found it in the house
when I get them ordered a spare leather and the 2 little washers that come with it will go in the bag

I use mine for outdoors projects like lead melting, trap waxing, etc... I have at least two but there may be three in the shop. I take out the plunger which is leather in mine and soak them in motor oil for a few hours about ever two years. Seem to always work. I've used non-ethanol gas quite a bit in it and my lanterns as well.

Some of the finest meals I ever ate been cooked on a coleman stove. Be away from camp 10-12-14 hours hunting fishing trapping whatever and pretty near starved of an evening has a lot to do with that most likely.

Stove went down so I have a 2 burner in my kitchen I'm using daily, works great. Bought the LP adapter for the 20 lb tanks, they last 7-8 months.
I have one of those pump caps for my Svea back pack stove, really a time saver, they and parts can be had from REI or most any other outdoor type store.
I also have a Coleman single burner camp stove that really works great too.
When I came home from the 'Nam in '72, I was in K-Mart and caught a blue light special for Coleman stuff. bought a 2 burner stove, (using it in the kitchen now), a lantern, and a heater for $10 ea your pick.

Re: picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/19/24 05:13 PM

good stuff Bob
I remember Blue light specials

the 2 burner stove new at REI is 198 now

just in inflation 10 dollars would be 75 dollars now , I bet they were selling at cost for 10 dollars and selling fuel at full price hoping to make up the difference.

If you run the old white gas version with LP, you can get a lot more heat out of the burners than a new LP version. The burners on the white gas are larger.

I have 2 of these, 1 is always in the basement, ready to go when we lose power.

Re: picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/19/24 07:25 PM

I like white gas better than propane. Works in cold weather. A full tank of white gas lasts a bunch longer than a one pound propane bottle also.
Posted By: GREENCOUNTYPETE

Re: picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/19/24 08:29 PM

21,548 btu per pound of LP and 4.24 pound per gallon and 14.6oz per empty cylinder you would be just over 8 pound for 86,192 BTU in 4 1 pound cans at a cost of 20 dollars on about the best sale I could find.

125,000 btu per gallon of Naphtha/white gas/Coleman fuel 6.18 pounds per gallon at 15 dollars for the Walmart price

68% of the heat for 1/3 more cost

the same BTU in LP costs you 52% more in weight

if weight and temp are not an issue and you invest in a 5 , 11 , or 20# cylinder adding even more weight , the cost goes down per unit of LP but you have a 50 dollar tank to figure in

Re: picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/19/24 08:33 PM

I didn't have to buy a tank for my propane stove. I had three or four at the time. I run fish house heaters off the too. I never have filled a bottle for the propane stove. I just use what ever propane is around here for the fish house heater. I have two white gas stoves also. I have one that is square cornered and has the two rod legs that fold up over the top when it is closed. I have never looked at it to see what model it is. It was in the basement of the house when I bought it in 1994. It is an older one, I would guess in the 1950's or older. The only place I would use white gas is in the gas stove.

Re: picked up a Coleman 425E stove - 11/19/24 11:16 PM

I dont know anything about those numbers but I have a propane stove out in the garage somewhere. Its set up for for quart size looking throw away bottles. They run out to fast. Lots faster than a tank of white gas. If its cold the stove wont work till you get the tent heated up for awhile. Those are observable facts. If propane works for you then thats great.
