Skunky Backbreaker - 12/10/24 11:25 PM

… looks like there may be more work involved in the scent proof packaging than the making of the stuff lol

… it’s stout !

The wildcats are in trouble

No sir but I sure did after opening all the packing and putting in the shed lol .. the wildcats don’t stand a chance with that kind of kick … I’ve used it before with good results… just don’t remember it being that stout… you must have sent a fresh batch lol

Next year I'm going to have to get some.

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 12:24 AM

That was actually from an earlier batch. It was formulated back in June. I have one customer who buys a bottle e very year and puts it on a shelf for a year. He said when aged one year, it's just right for him.

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 01:47 AM

I am a bit surprised by the first comments in this thread. I tried skunky back breaker this year for the first time but was very underwhelmed with the smell. I even had a friend (non trapper) with a sensitive nose test it and they got didnt get any skunk smell. My jar has a weird rotten meat type smell over the standard back breaker and I figured that was what paul was going for. I may have to give it another try next year and order another jar for next season and give it a second shot. I was sort of expecting something close to a cross between back breaker and cavens gusto but thats not what i got.

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 03:20 AM

I never had the issue referenced above, everytime I got it in, it was sho nuff skunky and beaver castor strong. Savell and I caught a lot of critters on that lure.

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 07:11 AM

I remember a beaver trapper friend that used Skunky Back Breaker one year on his beaver line and waylaid the chisel tooths.
He commented that his lure wasn't over powering with skunk but had just enough skunk to give it a little extra kick to call them flat tails.
Think he caught 90 plus beaver that year

I have not had that experience at all. I can easily smell both Castor and Skunk, even at cold temps.

I will order another bottle next fall and give it a second chance. Thanks for those who reached out to me.

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 06:56 PM

I have had good luck with it on marten & wolverine. I also used the dirt from the packaging and caught a couple reds although they showed an inclination to roll.

The packaging was just as potent as the product !!

Good stuff IMO !

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 07:43 PM

How would the smell not be contained to the jar?

I hear this complaint often on tman.
It has to be something in the packaging process.
The only stinky lures I have ordered,,, were from Bobby J and Ace when he was alive.....
No smell problem until opened.....

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 07:46 PM

I have had the postmaster complain more than a few times when I have received different lures. Especially skunky stuff.

Something in the essence is smaller in particle size than something in the lid (paper or plastic) or glass. Same reason nitrogen infused beers like Guinness can't be carbonated in a glass jar. The nitrogen escapes through the glass and it goes flat.

Probably the same reason skunky lures that sit in jars on the shelf for a few years lose some of their punch.

Sealed mylar bags seems to keep the skunk contained. As does the metal ammo can I keep my skunky lures in.

I have to agree. Just like blood can migrate through the plastic of a Ziploc bag. The blood molecule is smaller than the "holes" between the plastic molecules. Just like the molecules of flatulence can pass through various layers of different materials.

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 08:55 PM

I've gotten away from using dirt to package the skunky lures. I use a mylar bag inside another mylar bag. It seems to hold down the odor nicely. I have a box with three bottles of skunky backbreaker in it right now on the table in the house, and Rhonda hasn't said a thing. That tells me the bags are doing the trick.

Hide one in the dishwasher and see if she discovers it ))

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/11/24 09:50 PM

It's been a couple of years since we've used the dishwasher. We just do the dishes by manually. I can't afford to put it in there, because I'll forget where I put it, and it needs to be shipped tomorrow. I could write a note reminding me where I put it, but then I'd have to remember where the note is.

Fantastic! I was thinking the stuff I had was called "Spicy" Backbreaker. I will need to dig the jars out this weekend and see if I can still read the labels. I bought it for use on cats but I was thinking "Spicy" was in the name. Maybe I will try to make a video of taste testing the jars.

Most people don't know that you should clean the drain filter every month or sooner.

Now we are a home improvement site also.....

I just use the dishwasher for traps. Never gets any food clogging the filter. The trap oil just runs thru the filter with no problem. My filter is lifetime.

Thanks Bob for the info you posted about using mylar bags for shipping stinky stuff. Works great!

Re: Skunky Backbreaker - 12/12/24 04:27 PM

I have been using them for years now Paul.

Some postal delivery folks gave their customers notice about our stinky boxes and they made me aware of it. So I tried several methods until I tested the mylar pouches and found them to do a good job.

I also put a small piece of shop towel scented with spearmint oil into the pouches to help mask any possible leakage of odor. They aren't cheap but it may help us all down the road before odor restrictions are put into place.

Savell, all these motion pictures you are making you need to start a Youtube channel

Wouldn't be long before a couple things went viral. Then you'd be making money off your motion pictures and living the good life

Might even make yourself enough money for a nice new pellet grill
