Stormy Kromer hats

Stormy Kromer hats - 01/08/25 09:26 PM

I have looked at them for a while years , needing a size 8 no regular store had one and I dislike not being able to try anything on because so few fit.
so the wife surprised me for Christmas and ordered one in blaze orange size 8 and it fit perfect.

I didn't quite understand she had gotten the rancher , but she got the rancher which is the warmest of the Stormy Kromers and it is very nice and fits great.

a really nice touch is that while wearing it you can see no blaze to catch your eye or reflect , the underside of the bill is flat black

so I tried ordering myself one not in blaze orange , there are lots of times I want to be seen a mile off and some times maybe I want to have a warm head, no sun in my eyes but not be blaze orange

I ordered the original in Ottawa green , it came today and it did not fit the same , not near as deep as the Rancher which is an issue because deep and wide are a requirement to cover my head.
nor as warm.
I tried it on without removing the tags and it is going back I ordered another rancher.

they have a mid weight also but by the time I am ready to switch to an insulated hat it is already cold enough to just go all the way and I know how the Rancher fits.

any other Stormy Kromer wearers?
what model do you wear?
not cheap but American made.

I really like my hand knit wool hats the wife makes but like the bill and not having snow get behind my glasses

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/08/25 09:31 PM

I've looked at them on and off over the years, I need the bill, but those flaps don't really cover your ears when you need them too, I keep putting it off cause I can't try it on, though I guess I can just return it

usually wear a ball cap with a wool watch cap over it..

Got a new one for Christmas....can't find the old one...lol

They do run a tad small.

My Resistor hat size is 7 5/8.

But the Kromer 7 5/8 needs some stretching...but it getting there.

It's a nice hat...but not an ice fishing hat if the wind is blowing.

Those ear flaps do a little...but not much.

The Beaver / Otter hat comes out ...when ice fishing or when the Montreal Express is blowing

I have at least a half dozen. A couple of ranchers for cold weather, a waxed cotton for wet weather, and 3 or 4 regulars for general just looking cool.
A couple are the old originals, probably 25 or 30 years old.

And Pete... I own 6 Beaver Dam tip-up from the early 70's

So between the hat and traps...there's plenty of Wisconsin in my life

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/08/25 10:35 PM

I wear a 7 5/8. Ordered it some years ago from their site and it fits well. I have a couple others in the closet somewhere. This is my newest one. I've found out the hat will stretch about 1/8 in size after wearing and breaking in. Here's a couple pics [Linked Image]

I used to do that also my son does that a lot , still have to find a watch cap big enough to fit and then over the hat.

the rancher does cover the ears , it has an additional flip down insulated flap to get to the bottom of the ear , I am sort of glad I never found one to try in it probably would have been a classic and I would have not liked it

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/08/25 10:48 PM

I have one original Kromer and about 5 Stormy Kromers. I also have a Stormy Kromer wool vest and a wool mackinaw coat. As if one couldn't tell, I'm a big fan of wool.

Most of these I've purchased in person at the Stormy Kromer home store (& factory) in Ironwood, MI. My wife kringes when I turn off to go the their store when we're driving through that part of the U.P.

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/08/25 11:02 PM

I like to try them on , as sizing can vary slightly. I probably have 8-10 of them in inventory.

They have an online Clearance section that can be hit or miss !

I never bought one because I thought they made people look stupid. But I see now it's not the hat.

Wyoming Trader hats beat Stormy Kromers hands down. Covers ears also.

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/08/25 11:49 PM

I have three...and like you said, they are all the same size but definitely fit differently. I need a rancher, the three I have are what I would consider going out on the town hats, not out in the woods or on the ice (dont fully cover ears like the rancher).

I always liked the look of them ever since Ed Gein made them famous.

They are made in the UP now. Stormy was a train man from Wisconsin and his wife made the very first one for him.
The originals were made here, they went out of business for a while and started up again in Michigan.

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 01:39 AM

Being 20 miles from where old Ed operated I can tell you he did NOT wear a Kromer. The hat he wore had side flaps which tied over the top. Usually bought those at the farm stores. In fact we used to call that style a GEINER. All the old railroaders used to wear black Kromers, part of their winter attire.Have been up to the Kromer store a few times in the UP. Worth a stop if you are up that way! Nice selection and you can try them on. If your in the UP make it a stop, worth your while.

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 01:45 AM

I have one of the waxed ranchers.

Here I was feeling all self conscious thinking I had REALLY big ears and it wouldn't cover them.

I'm glad I'm not alone in the struggle !

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 01:53 AM

I'm always surprised how many trappers especially are head over heels for a company that uses fake fur on their trapper hat. Mine collects dust ever since I found that out.

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 01:59 AM

Elmer Fudd says be berry quiet. Turn the hat sideways on your head so the wabbit thinks you don't see him. 🤣

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 02:54 AM

did you know that your hat size is the circumference of your head divided by 3.14 , it makes perfect sense I don't know why all the size charts when it was so simple

25/3.14=7.96 which is why I generally need an 8

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 03:46 AM

I prefer the Stormy Kromer Rancher to the Wyoming Traders type due to the fact that the ear flaps fold up outside the hat. WY Traders fold inside so the fit changes, gets to loose when you fold the flaps down.

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 05:33 AM

I just got a new one in the mail today. Original Kromer, 7 3/4 Partridge Plaid. I ordered it back on Cyber-Monday in Dec., on sale with free shipping. Got it a couple of weeks ago and had to send it back, too big. I have 4 others,
all 7 3/4, this one was sized wrong, the new one they replaced it with is perfect. I have a blaze orange for deer hunting, a cammo one, a black one that is about wore out, and a canvass khaki water proof one. Been wearing Kromers for years.

The Stormy Kromer Rancher has better ear flaps than the original models, but all are quite functional.
No doubt the Wyoming Trader is an excellent alternative.

Re: Stormy Kromer hats - 01/09/25 03:15 PM

I have several models and FOR SURE they all seem to fit differently..........it's a bit frustrating as I have a couple I don't wear as much as wrong fit that its too late to return them.

That said, when one goes out west in the winter, you can't help but notice all the ranchers and cowboys wearing them. Those dudes know how to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter......

You don't see many of them wearing knit stocking caps like we do in the east......maybe its just that, like cowboy hats, western guys are making a statement? Not sure......I certainly don't see many of them here in NY and we have 18 inches of snow right now and they got 5-6 feet just north of us........SO, we are just as cold as most places where guys are wearing the Stormy Kromer's......

Big fan of Stormy Kromers. It's the only billed hat I will wear!

They're not wearing cowboy hats cause they don't want to be mistaken for truckers!, lol
