Mentor is getting old - 03/19/25 02:33 AM
My mentor and good friend is in his mid 80s and slowed down a lot this year. He has been stuck in his chair for the past month due to pain. He taught me to commercial crawfish and catfish. I know like most in the outdoor world we have had that one mentor who has helped us through the years. Just wondering what y’all did when they got to the age were they couldn’t go in the outdoors anymore. I try to make sure to visit at least twice a week but today it hit me hard when he sold me they last of his commercial fishing gear.

Don't really have anyone local like that, all those guy passed when I was really young. Most of my mentors are online. Basically just try and keep in touch, chat a good bit, help them post stuff when I can

Just tell him what yah catching ...how was the bite...weather ..conditions...
All the little things going on with the fishing...keep him well informed...he will
Appreciate that....almost like he was there.
Be sure to tell him...how much you valued him as a mentor.

You talk. About any interests, any happenings, whatever. If YOU are trapping, if you can take him along with you some day....Do!! If not, tell him about it. He may be living vicariously through you.
But the main thing is to be there. Just be there. Let him show you what he needs.
I had one guy that ask me to bring over some beaver to put up, he could do this at his house, and we would have coffee, and I would tell him how the line went that day,

This. Old folks get lonely and spending time with them makes their lives better.

Lost a good one in Nov of 2020 to the vid at 84.
He was still going and fishing and doing pretty good.
Taught me a lot about deer hunting, fishing and trapping
Dad is still going at 78, hunted out of a lock on type tree stand this past season
Best thing you can do is sit and talk with them about their experiences and try to absorb all their tales to remember after they are gone

Used to meet an old Bayman every morning for coffee at a rowboat livery station to chat and watch the sporties go off to fish....He was a wealth of information and history of the area, but if you asked a direct question he couldn't remember. However, in the course of the story telling, something would click and you'd get a tidbit of info, IF you were paying attention.Learned a lot by accident that way. My only regret was not taking him with me once in awhile.
