Loons

Loons - 08/15/25 09:44 PM

Had a chance to photograph a pair of loons along the North shore of Lake Superior in Ontario this summer. Such a cool bird with a call that makes the north woods famous.
Hope you enjoy.

My favorite water bird. Sadly here on Lake Erie we don't see them like we used to. Seems as if cormorants have taken there niche over completely

The loons remind me of the movie “on golden pond”!

Lovely birds . They are on the big river by me and make all their neat calls every spring. One of the most beautiful birds to see and hear. Thank you for sharing.

Made me feel like I was part of nature, and one with the world!
Nothing else seemed to matter.

Beautiful birds, but can be a real pest if you're fishing with live minnows.

Loons appear on the NC Outer Banks in March. On of the last birds to leave for the northern grounds.

Loons and elk, make my two favorite sounds. Been infatuated with both critters since I was a boy.

Years ago, I was duck hunting on a lake. About 100 yards away was another guy in a blind. A loon flew over him and he shot at it. Luckily, he missed.
Later that morning I asked him how he did and asked him why he shot at the loon? He said, was that a loon? He thought it was a goose and had never seen a loon fly before.
I wondered how he thought they went south for the winter? Walked? crazy grin

Loon is gagara in Russian, Yuri Gagarin's last name literally means "son of a loon".

Some men in the village where I used to live went fishing to a lake deep into the peatbogs in the sping on an MT-LB and it broke down. They were stranded there without food for a while so they shot a loon, plucked and cooked it, out of desperation. It was so saturated with fish stench that they all reeked of fish and pond scum so bad that when their friends finally came to rescue them on a snowmachine and pulled them in a big Khanty sled through the village, all village dogs chased the sled and barked like crazy. The smell took another week to dissipate.

If you squint real hard from a distance you can almost make those cormorants appear to be Loons.

For sure. It's how they ride in the water that reminds me of them. First time I saw 20+ cormorants floating, I thought I saw the mother load of loons lol

Cool story and cooler art. A friend of my father's was once snowed in on a spring bear hunt up in Canada. The story was that they ran out of food and all they could manage to kill was a loon. According to them it was so fishy that they couldn't get past the first bite.
