Opens here in Arkansas as well.
Stay safe, check those deer stands I would say use a safety harness, but then I'd be a hypocrite because I don't. Lol
Good luck

Buddy shot one with a bow this morning, tracked it a good ways where it ran through a neighborhood, we got the deer but it was a fiasco.

Re: Mn. Gun deer opener Sat. - 11/08/25 12:26 AM

This is a pretty densely packed neighborhood of lake houses, keep that in mind.

He shot the deer and while tracking it it got up and ran, he backed out and waited 90 mins. I went and helped him track. We tracked her to the front yard of the resort and lost the trail, she doubled back and crossed the road and laid up in cattails beside some cabins, it was there we bumped her again. She took off running pretty good and my buddy said "well she looks okay" I said Screw this and took off running for the bridge, she got to the end of the peninsula and jumped in the river and swam across, she kept running and swimming through the little channels until she laid up behind someone's garage, I tried to back out but she got up and ran though the last canal on the map, I ran around and there was a guy in the yard so I explained what happened but he was sure the deer didnt run through the yard, I started looking along the shoreline and the homeowners dog found the deer under the dock that was on shore for the winter, deer took off back across the canal, I went running to go around the yard and the homeowners dog bit me, thankfully just got my boot.

Blood was gone at this point and I wasn't exactly sure where she went but I had a good idea, we walked to the canal where the trail ends and she was laying on the bank under a propane tank, we managed to back out without spooking her and I went and talked to a lady on her ring door while my buddy snuck in behind the garage and tried to shoot the deer, first shot missed but she didn't move and he put a second in her, at that point I ran up and finished it. Drug the deer across her yard and loaded it in my buddies trunk. All's well that ends well.

Re: Mn. Gun deer opener Sat. - 11/09/25 04:36 PM

Whats the problem the fact it was near houses or the poor shot? Seems a errant shot can happen to anyone and hunt where you have permission. If that's not the problem then what is?

Re: Mn. Gun deer opener Sat. - 11/09/25 04:38 PM

I'm guessing he was talking about shooting at it by a propane tank but I think he missed the part that it was a bow and not a gun.

"Hunting" neighborhood deer, then wounding it and chasing it through people's yards. And I agree. What a black eye that must have put on ethical hunters. And I would venture that folks that put up the money for a cabin on a lake are mostly city folk, and seeing wildlife in their yard is probably a big part of why they buy that cabin.
Some guy chasing a wounded deer through their "subdivision", legal or not, won't earn many points for hunters.

Next time I'll just let it die in someone's backyard without bothering to look for it, that's probably the most ethical thing to do.

Hiding our activities is why half the non hunters are non hunters

catering by Hiding hasn't helped.

And shooting deer in a development and chasing it, wounded, through people's yards does remarkable good things for our sport? Give me a break!
I am a hunter, trapper, and fisherman, among other things, and I would be furious if such a thing occurred on our property and would take pains to make a case it didn't happen again.
In a setting like what was described, you can bet some of those folks actually feed those deer, legal or not. I'm not here to debate whether or not people should get attached to neighborhood wild animals. I am just pointing out that harvesting what amounts to residential deer falls in the same category as "trappers" making sets in places they know they shouldn't. Same stupidity, same results. Bad for all ethical hunters and trappers.
Now, are you going to say I'm wrong?

"Residential deer" are archery hunted heavily in a lot of towns and cities here in Iowa.

You might need to increase the amount of corn you're putting out.

Re: Mn. Gun deer opener Sat. - 11/10/25 02:36 AM

It wasn't shot in a development, it was one lunged with a bow and ran quite a ways. Not everyone lives in Alaska and can hunt miles from civilization. Once the deer ended up there what should he have done? Let it die in someone's yard or do everything he could to finish it.

Yes, they are trying to stop the spread of invasive plants. Starting this spring you will also be required to bag your feces and take them out of the woods with you. They don't want to introduce any corn to the WMA's. grin

I think the first round of breeding is done. My cameras became active again 4 days ago now they are starting to go quiet again. Been keeping more involved with the rut this year. Quite interesting.

It appears that this year my focus is how fat I can get from sitting all day and binge eating sandwiches. I have over 50 hours in the stand so far but each day is getting a little more difficult.

In this area its neat how the hunt changes with groups a half mile away. One group isn't seeing deer and a half mile away the others have filled out.

Buddy of mine got his finally today. He saw one other buck today after shooting his. On the way home from the book fair at school just after dark I saw deer on almost every single field I went by so they were out. Saw one decent buck neck outstretched doggin a doe. I’ll be in the stand tomorrow and excited to pull the chip
On my camera when in walk by on the way in. SEnwimd is not great for my two main stands, but I’ll just need to be on watching over my left shoulder to see them coming before they wind me! Managed to catch my first muskrat of the year yesterday so I’m feeling optimistic! Happy trapping and hunting! ScottW

Backstraps for supper! Haven't had much time to hunt, but I was able to talk the boss into giving me the day off. It was George's turn to go with me. We had a yearling doe in front of us at one point, but it's a buck only zone. A five point stepped into the clearing about twenty minutes before the end of legal shooting. He stopped and stayed quartering hard towards us for about ten minutes. George was shaking like a leaf the entire time. When the buck wasn't turning broadside, George started begging me to shoot it in the head so it wouldn't get away. He finally turned and I shot hit him right over the heart at about eighty yards. He ran about thirty yards and tipped over. George came unglued and started smacking me and screaming, it was really funny to watch. A really fun hunt for the boy and I. [Linked Image]
