Vehicle title fees in Alaska

Anyone know what happens if you buy a used vehicle and dont title it within the 30 day period?

Ive tried to look it up several ways and cant find an answer. I dont want to do anything that will get me in trouble...

Do you have the title ???????? Don't sweat it ! It's just a matter of money ! I have three trucks here that have never been registered...............but I'm not on the road system. As long as you have the title it's no big deal

If you drive it on road you will need to title it and register it I know . I had a Toyota that I did not change and as soon as registration expired I got pulled over and they impounded it cost 600 to get back and had to do title and register to get it out of impound .

There is no difference if you dont title it in that 30 day window. Same price at the DMV.

Except its not in your name. Doesn't that present a problem like Team V said?

Just an FYI, the seller may have turned in their little portion on the bottom of the title to the DMV, so the state knows you didn't title and register it in your name. If on the road system and they pull you over, they will impound it as Team V said.

Thanks guys. I do have the title and im not driving it yet. It had just slipped my mind until i saw the title pinned to my to do board the other day... I noticed it wasnt dated too. I tried to contact the previous owner but got no response. As mentioned i cant rely on if he sent in his portion either. Guess I'll call the old dmv monday and tell em i screwed up... I am just stressed it will cost me a fortune.

I woul not call any one and just go to one of the title and tag places and they will just do it. Dmv can be a pain

X2. If you are there with the title in your hand they are more likely to just register it . Don't call and give them time to be a bureaucrat.

I have held Titles as long as 5-6 years and never had a problem when I got around to needing to register them. Don’t worry, it won’t be any problem.

There won't be any issue if you just go into the DMV and title it in your name and register it. The only issue you would get into is if you were driving it, got pulled over, and hadn't done what you were supposed to. No big deal otherwise.

God I love Alaska. As was mentioned no problems no extra fees. New plates and z tags, 140 out the door. Where I come from i'da paid an extra hundred in late fees...not to mention waiting for a title in the mail.
