Joe, I think you need to go up there and live for a while, so you can personally get a handle on the situation .

Alcohol & welfare

Re: Alaskans wanna comment on crime in the Bush? - 07/02/19 07:13 AM

Lets comment on the crime in New York instead, Its much more interesting. You all have gang bangers, car jackings, armed robbery, ANTIFA, an opioid crises, crap on the streets, homeless, Gay Pride marches, oh and I am sure you have alcoholics as well. We dont have any of that other cool stuff here in bush Alaska.

We have problems with Alcohol , just like any other place do. Most bush villages outlaw the sale, so they are trying to get a handle on it (unlike New York)

As far as police protection. We should have public safety just like any other town in the US. Some folks don't realize that a lot of valuable resources like, fish, timber, minerals, gold, oil and gas.ALL come of out of bush Alaska. And with oil alone, the US government gets 60% of the revenue. That supports the welfare of Anchorage, Fairbanks, and yes ,even New York City, and then some.

The news source in your link is a Liberal Washington Post Rag. owned by the globalist that hate America, and wants all us Rural Americans to move to the cities to better control us.

No thanks.

Far from being a snow flake, lol.

I'm not real nosy about what goes on in other locales. I haven't had a drink in more than 20 years, and I have my own way of handling drunken abusers that doesn't include LEs, lol.

Re: Alaskans wanna comment on crime in the Bush? - 07/03/19 09:39 PM

I've preached all around the world, in every state but California, Maine, and Hawaii, individual people everywhere have the same body, soul, and spirit, the same emotions, the same conscience, the ability to choose between right and wrong. The drunks at the bar I grew up next to Florida were just as likely to murder and rape as the drunks in bush villages in Alaska. The ability to sin is everywhere, but so is the ability to repent (Turn from.), ask forgiveness, and then do right. Others should be willing to forgive, and except in the case of a sin unto death, (Murder, rape.) allow the individual who is willing to do different to move on with their life. I do not conceal carry in bush villages, but I do in Anchorage and Fairbanks, where people have tried to rob me and my family several times. In the Lower 48, I conceal carry where it is legal for me to do so, as I feel much more uncomfortable traveling between big cities to preach than I do in bush villages. If believing in God, voting for Trump, having guns, being an outdoorsman, trying to live a moral life, admitting when I am wrong, asking forgiveness and getting up and dusting myself off and going on when I do fall makes me a snowflake, so be it.

Re: Alaskans wanna comment on crime in the Bush? - 07/04/19 01:15 PM

I think maybe some are missing the point of the article. It isn't saying that 'crime' is any different in rural Alaska than it is elsewhere. They are pointing out the response time ..or lack of response to the crime.

I recall in 1980 I had a bunch of stuff stolen. I managed to raise the troopers on an old HF radio. Three MONTHS later 3 troopers showed up. In the meantime I had dealt with the problem myself.

Slow or no response and an almost complete lack of real consequences is, IMO, the real problem with recidivism. It isn't the root cause of the crime, but it sure adds to it IMO.

I appreciate Otterman's kind words...

I must admit, that is the first time I have been called a "snowflake!" Ever...

Like AV said, if you ask for opinions, why would you be upset when those you queried actually did what you asked and gave you the benefit of their opinions? Especially opinions based on EXPERIENCE (not to mention, in my case, the wisdom of age!)

Attention. Take a look at a map. A lot more to New York than cities. I know. Not looking to p people off but facts are facts. We all benefit if we think with our heads and not our stomachs and heart.

Most all cities in the lower 48 have a police force or at least a county sherriff and deputies. They have that because they have a tax base of property owners and working stiffs, as well as a few businesses to TAX! Tax money provides for policing.
Rural Alaska does not have any of that for the most part. At least they don't have enough to support police. Lack of police is definately part of the problem.
There are other differences in rural Alaska than the lower 48 as well, I think.
More policing may help, but I think there are attitudes and ideas in rural Alaska that must change before real change will come.

Exactly. It will take "cultural change" to get better.

In bush Yukon calling the RCMP is a total waste of time, and I was reminded of that fact just last week when we actually caught two slugs in one of our cabins. Police were not interested at all. They wont even answer my emails. This isn't the first time it has happened either. I have zero respect for our LEOs. Will deal with it my way from here on out. Im so sick of being taken advantage of, it wont be pretty next go around.

I spent the last month watching organized crime ,primarily nonresident guides and fishermen illegally fishing for king salmon during a closed season with a little help from resident air taxi services.

Residents are not allowed tp fish or keep even one fish, yet a blind eye is turned to the comercial abuse of the resource when there is a conservation problem?

I met up with a CO one day near my trapline. He had a snow machine, sleigh and a bunchof 5gal jugs of gas and some overnight stuff.
I asked him where he was headed,he said there was a report of two guys fishing at a remote lake and staying in an outfitters cabin. He was sneaking in to gather some evidence and arrest them.from where he was,it was about a 150 mile trip one way breaking trail thru the bush.

In all fairness Jeff, I agree with all you said, but you have to take in consideration how many more people there are in NY State than in Alaska. I live in Central NY, in the Country. 4-5 hours away from the NY City cesspool. I am hoping to be able to go to your great State some day. Not trying to be a ----, just saying. Would be a trip to have your life style.

Jeff. Each to his own but a couple of facts. 1. I’m an 8 hr drive NE of rotten NY City. You mentioned a number of lousy things in/around cities. I agree with NEAR these (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) holes. Not a problem here. Please take the time to look at a map of NY.
2. On MY property I trap beaver, mink, otter, coon, rats, coyotes, red and gray fox, fisher, and bobcats.
No bag limits and for some critters 6 month season.
All of Alaska is not the same, neither is NY.

I am not here to bash New York State, I do know geography (Thank you) I just wanted to discuss some of the serious problems there, but the OP deleted his post. I guess he only wants to hear about Alaska's problems and not about his home state.

Bash NY City all you want. lol. We do too. Especially Cuomo and DeBlasio. Our gun rights are always in jeopardy because of Cuomo. He likes to pass Bills in the middle of the night. There are many serious issues in this State, agreed.

As some of you may know I'm trying to move to the interior in the somewhat near future. I had a customer come in yesterday to my work with Alaska plates. After helping them, I commented on their Alaska plate and asked where they were from. They said Seward and that they absolutely hated Alaska and would never go back. He said the crime and drugs was out of control. I mentioned that I was looking to move to the interior and he said "well you better move soon because the whole state is in the toilet, because of the heroin addicts and car jackings. Oh and Seward has become the gay capital of Alaska." I couldn't help but think that this is only one guy's opinion (and the first I've really heard someone from Alaska talk about the state that way). He said I would be crazy to leave Idaho. But something about the guy led me to believe that he was exaggerating. Or that maybe it was just his area of Alaska in particular that had those types of severe crime issues and that he just had a bad taste in his mouth. I'm thinking I'm going to visit some towns in the interior before I actually move up there to get a look for myself. If any of you want to meet up for some fishing or bird hunting, I'm probably planning on September of 2020 for a visit.

Don't know about Seward, but plenty of theft and break-ins around here. Mostly drug-related.
And, the State is financially broke.

Spent a short time in Seward this spring......from my short observation I would say the fellow you talked to was pretty much correct. A real close friend is a state trooper up in Anchorage and he says its so bad he's going to quit and move back to Yukon. Stay in Idaho, you wont be disappointed that way....

Re: Alaskans wanna comment on crime in the Bush? - 07/29/19 02:42 AM

Just like everywhere else in this country Alaska has a relatively large percentage of people who can't deal with life on a daily basis. They have turned to drugs and alcohol to escape, can't hold a job and have lost any sense of morality if they ever had one.

This is what happens when there is no accountability.

It would be an act of mercy if they were shot and killed in the commission of a crime.
