What to do with fall beaver?

What to do with fall beaver? - 09/24/19 05:12 PM

Working on thinning out some nuisance beavers. Got a few, will be good bait. What does anyone do with pelts this time of year? They are not worth much even when prime, much less this time of year. I was thinking about getting some tanned, maybe practice sewing or something. Anyone want to give up their secret markets? lol

I put them up, run an ad on CL and cruise some of the outdoor forums, there are always people looking for beaver skins to try and home tan. Or get them tanned and again run a ad on CL. Have done this the past three years with fall beaver and have sold them all for 6-12 dollars put up, 35-50 for tanned. I sold to one guy who was learning how to tan, he got it down pretty good and now we barter, a win win for both of us smile
You can also get hold of the mushers, some pay good money for beaver, 5-15 a piece.

Tom Krause when he was editor of the Trapper wrote an article on trash fur, in which he was cutting it up into fur patches for flat sets. It would work in strips for flags for cats too where legal. He was a real innovator and he was always teaching young trappers something to improve their skills.
That is what I do with mine, in I recycle them.

Lure holder is what I do with junk fur. Every bit as good as sheep wool maybe even better.

Tanned ones are still good for crafting and this past year I sent some off and made into leather (buckskin). It is not as stretchy as a deer hide and haven't done anything with them yet, but the leather looks nice.

If you wait to do your fall beaver trapping at least until 25 October you will have a better product than 25 September. You can sell these pelts for $50 to $60 dollars if you figure out the markets.

The hatter market is not a market for Alaska beaver. No money there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know it's better to wait a bit, but i want to get these culverts and flooded areas drained before it freezes too hard. So far got 5, ma and pa, a teenager and a couple kids. I've heard that the little ones move pretty well, will probably get them tanned and sell for doilies or bar stool covers.
