Morels

Morels - 04/09/20 05:50 PM

Didn't we have a bunch of fires last summer? I think some of the inter tie electric lines were damaged and a dam down by Homer had electric damage. I know us Fairbanksans are paying more for our electricity after loss of dam power.
So anyway, who will be out looking for morels?

Planning on it. Also planning on shrimping, halibut fishing, salmon fishing, bear hunting, etc etc. but I'm sure I'll get a few. The fires were close (too close!) to Cooper Landing and Sterling so won't have to go far . Some areas you could actually walk through. Other areas the deadfall is piled up jackstraw 6-8' high!

Speaking of fires does the downed trees/cover then regrowth help the hares overall or will it tamp them down?

Depending on how quickly they lift the travel bans we might be picking morels big time this year. The big fire around the lodge should produce a good crop. Hoping the borders open soon so we don't have to go down that road..

Re: Morels - 04/10/20 12:06 PM

False morel for sure in the BOTTOM picture. It has/will have a solid/filled body while true morels ARE hollow. Another thing to keep in mind is when picking morels make sure they are in good shape and not old. Lots of orange and dark yellow spots or starting to decay will very likely equal some serious discomfort and "ejecta" from both ends, if you get my drift.....

I'll be picking as soon as mother nature and the morels decide that "winter" is over. Right now it's snowing and frozen again.....spring in Pennsyltucky.....

One very important point I stress when teaching the youngsters about mushroom hunting is "when in doubt throw it out".

I can't wait until ours pop here....good luck and happy eating!

I'm guessing that with the 4 feet of snow still in the woods, the season here is not quite ready.....!

In Montana after a fire, we can't really find much until mid- to late may. Better in June.

20short I believe that shroom is called a verpa. My cousin is a mushroom fanatic, I’ll ask him next time I see him.

The Kenai got scorched pretty good last year, and lots of easy road access in Sterling and Cooper Landing. I haven't gone looking yet but a couple buddies got about 15 lbs last friday afternoon. Its warm enough and got some rain last week so they're popping out.
