Too bad. He was one of the few that came here seeking advice, and actually took it. He kept at it, through dis-appointment, injury, and peril.
I'm truely glad he got his wolverine. He earned it.

Re: Wolverine Hunter? - 06/10/20 01:42 AM

Hi Guys. John told me you were asking about me. I appreciate the concern and questions. It's nice to be acknowledged and missed.

Life has been topsy turvy for me for awhile. Last fall, I got deathly sick. I really think I was sick with tick-borne illness all summer. Picked it up when I visited my family in MN in the spring Turkey hunting. But it kicked my ars all summer and then manifested itself into something really really ugly in August/September. I finally wound up in the ER in Homer with a temp not quite to 106 degrees. I had been like that for a few days. No wonder I'm brain damaged, eh? I can appreciate South Peninsula Hospital and all, but they really had no idea what to do with me as I'm a pretty complicated case. If you saw my med supply, it would raise your eyebrows. I had to stop the monthly biologic (immune suppressant) that I have been on for a decade - to give my immune system a chance to fight. They ran every test they could think of. Tried everything they could think of. After several days, I finally asked the doctor if I could treat myself. He/they asked what I would do. I told them that I had tick-borne illness, whether their tests confirmed it or not. I asked for prednisone and doxycycline. They obliged. I turned the corner in 24 hours after beginning that. When I was well enough, I went back to my primary doctor team back in the states, and confirmed Babesiosis. Kind of like Lyme, only this one gives you the high temps, wrecks your joints, kills your energy. We treated that for a month with three different potent antibiotics. I got to feeling better. Now have been working my way back to starting a new biologic as the old ones will no longer work. It's a slow climb out of the hole on a slippery slope.

As fi that weren't enough - I've been having some really significant marriage problems. I'm not shy about it. I refuse to live in shame. I'm not proud. Heck - lots of guys do. Especially guys who go to AK on a bucket list trip, meet a gal, begin on a long-distance basis, and finally throw in together and try to make a go of it. I'm not going to get into details. She is a good lady. I am a good man. There is love. But we just have some real big differences that we can't seem to agree on. ONE of the issues is that I am a mental health therapist, and I just know too (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) much for my own good. I don't want a divorce. I want to work it out - but when she told me that it was coming, I put my boat up for sale to feel out the market. Geez, A guy can't do anything around here with you sleuths at work! But like the typical woman, she has changed her mind yet again. So we are going to work on it. The boat won't sell in this market. There has been zero interest. So I will put it to use fishing salmon, halibut, bear hunting, duck hunting, trapping, and such. What I have always done. 700 hours in two years. I spend A LOT of time in that boat :-)

For those of you that are the praying type, I will take all I can get! For the marriage, AND the health. For the rest of you, send me whatever good Karma or thoughts you can.

Covid has been extremely hard on us. My wife's bed and breakfast has been devastated. Hundreds and hundreds of reservations have been cancelled. All deposits are owed back with numbers in the tens of thousands. Basically, no season at all this year. And all that relief money? She has not been able to get much.

Me? I've been able to keep working my real job - so I'm managing ok. It's just basically a living that supports my simple lifestyle. Hunt. Fish. Trap. Explore. Live as simply as possible.

I don't know what the future holds. I'm trying to draw the line and look to the future and build trust. I've invested a ton of time, effort, money etc. and have sacrificed a ton (where I come from) into being in Alaska, and would prefer to keep it that way.

Perhaps this Covid thing will be a blessing for my wife and I? We can work together on the house and property, and actually see each other for a change. Spend some quality time fishing and hunting and gathering berries like we like to do, walking the beach with the dogs, and etc.

I'm in bad shape right now. I couldn't possibly pull off the trap line you guys saw me do before. I'm too weak. No way I could climb a mountain. But I still have that desire burning within. My hope is to get back at it. Another wolf or wolverine would be just dandy, but I really want to get after the lynx now. Never done that before - so it would be the next big ticket item on the list. I got some good ideas about it anyway - and if the time comes, I will certainly be more active on here again.

Thanks for asking about me guys.

Good to hear from you Tim! I'm sitting in my bear stand as I write this, remembering how we talked about swapping bear hunts last year. Glad you're still kicking and haven't left the state. Praying for your marriage and health. Let me know if there's ever anything I can do. I'm just up the road and I have some solid friends in Homer too.

Minnesota is my original home. That's bad enough without putting me in Michigan haha.

Re: Wolverine Hunter? - 06/12/20 06:21 PM

Don't worry about it Viking - I will be back at it in one way shape or form. You can bet on it. It's more a matter of when and where.

Re: Wolverine Hunter? - 06/12/20 06:23 PM

KK Good luck bear hunting! I sure do enjoy that, but have less and less desire to kill black bears. Been there done that so much. Now, I mostly just help other people do it. Or if I get the urge, I try for a big one when I need the meat, which I don't this spring. What I'd really like to do is get my first brown. Please let us know if you score, and thanks for the good wishes.

No doubt about it JR. I've been at this "comeback thing" since I was 19. I'm 55 now. There have been a lot of them, and there will be another. It is the only way to roll.

Soon, I will start my mountain climbing workout. I drew a special permit for mountain goat this fall. Lots of getting in shape to do. I highly doubt I will be among the 50% who draw, and don't even try!

I got some help lined up too - so that is great.
