Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/26/20 03:27 AM

The start of the 2021 trapping playlist. It should be 3 or 4 videos long by now but zero snow. This is the beginning

anyways.

Nice haul of fish! Is that a lake you are on?

Gotta be a river. I saw a sheefish in the net. Big whitefish also. Don't catch those in lakes.

That there's the peel river below aklavik

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/27/20 01:33 AM

Nope the Peel River. Starts up in the Yukon near Mayo Yukon and flows north through the Peel River Water shed. The all Canadian route to the Klondike Gold Fields at the turn of the Century. Crosses the Yukon border then passes the community of Fort MacPherson then Aklavik and eventually dumps into Mackenzie Bay and the Arctic Ocean.

May not be the norm in lakes, but I know some guys that take them out of lakes in under ice nets. I heard that when the water is high in spring time the fish go in and some don't make it back out when the water goes back down.

Thanks for the info! I know one guy in Fort Mcpherson. Did a river rafting trip with him two summers ago. He doesn't hunt, fish, or trap, but will join those who do and help out. He sure enjoys the outdoors and photography.

Now everybody knows where your fishing spot is Muskrat.

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/27/20 05:38 AM

Nice day fishing muskrat. I have two nets out now. Been catching pretty good so far. Not quite that good though.

Around here the beaver dammed off alot of whitefish streams like you have there, and they cant to get back out to the river from the lakes in fall. We bust them open sometimes a bit, and grab fish as they go over the spillway, and let them out.

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/27/20 06:27 PM

You are correct on the Sheefish and lakes. we had a lake like that near the mountains. But the river cut into it and they can come and go as they wish now.

How far up did you start your river rafting trip? Bonetplume River? I hear that is a beutifull trip though the big canyons of the upper Peel.

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/27/20 06:29 PM

It is not the best spot anyways, I mostly set it there because it is so handy for the school to walk classes down. If I catch a couple egg fish iam happy. The dog will eat a fish once in a while
Posted By: muskrat411

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/27/20 08:26 PM

I pulled my net out a while ago the whitefish eggs started to get runny and the meat soft so pulled it out. Lake fish are better eating but I have to find a good lake. Most of the good fish lakes are cutting out and drying up. From the banks eroding and cutting into the main rivers. Side effect of climate change I suppose. Too much rain in the summer washes out the permafrost.

The porcupine caribou herd is going through close to town and lots of hunters out. So I have been busy monitoring. No snow so I have been going out by ATV.

Whoalla you really made a long trip to get to Fort MacPherson from there you sure you were not in Fort Yukon? I don't think there is a pass over the mountains to get to the Peel watershed from those rivers.
Posted By: bfisch

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/30/20 02:11 AM

Never been to the Peel. Haha! The man I was with on the trip was from Fort McPherson and traveled to Alaska to join me for the journey. Started in Anaktuvak Pass and went downriver to Allakaket.

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 11/30/20 10:12 PM

Last year we got lots of salmon, Chum, Pink and the odd Chinook. Mainly Chum. Last year I caught a couple they are in a different video. The caught lots in the ocean also last year but hardly any this year.

That sounds like an incredible adventure. Some big mountains in that area, must have seen lots of porcupine caribou too through that area.

That gray is a nice big one from the looks of it, crazy catching two like that. What was the stuff you got out of the butter container you added to the caribou head?

Ukaruk. Rendered beluga oil used to preserve muktuk. Finished the muktuk so it is bait now. Like bacon grease on steroids.

"Muskrat what are you calling the "Bible" in the deer's guts? We take another part too - what we call the deer's apron. Mesentaries would be the book name. You know it. It is the thin like "see thru" layer wrapped around the deer's guts. Lots of fat in it. We just throw it on the snow to cool and then ball it up for trail food on the way home.

Thanks Northern Trapper I have another caribou hunting video ready to go but waiting to get a little more video as it is too short for a mixed video. This has been the best caribou year I have seen in my life. the caribou showed up end of October and stayed on the edge of the delta all winter. Still about 10000 bou within cell phone range of Aklavik.

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 03/18/21 12:03 AM

Once you get the fence and stuff set up they are quick to assemble and if you take the bait out and the beats leave them alone they should be good for several years with minimum bother.

Beautiful country Muskrat. I like your sleigh. Sure is deep, you can pack a lot of stuff in it. Looks like your tongue on it got a little tweeted . Stay safe

I dropped trees on it a couple times. Lucky I never hit the sled. That's my wood hauling sled. It must be 15 years old now that black plastic really saves it.

That Ox meat is good stuff. Assume you are allowed to shoot some. The Canadian Ox are noticeably larger than ours in Alaska.

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 05/11/21 08:15 PM

Its the same Greenlandic muskox that you have Marten, They made there way over from Kaktovik area in the 80s. I wonder if they have muskox legends about travelling through the Panama Canal? The closest Canadian muskox we have are eat of Tuktoyaktuk near the Anderson River.

Re: Muskrat411 2021 trapping season - 05/11/21 08:17 PM

We are allowed to shoot muskox Martentrapper, they want to keep herd numbers low to keep them from competing with caribou, moose and sheep.

Yes knife market is big. Blade show in Atlanta next month. Not sure about shipping horns out of Canada. Ask around.

Harbour Stanton from Alaska use to always drive up and buy antlers. If I ever hunt muskox I will look into it further. Or just wait for Harbour.
