Calling Wolves???? - 12/06/20 08:13 PM
Alright, I am jumping the gun a little with the potential of a Wolf season here in Wisconsin...but I am sitting with 3 Preference Points.
If I get drawn I am not sure if I will go with traps or the gun, probably my tack-driver Remington 600 6mm. I have called and hunted coyotes for decades and am pretty well set up. I am wondering if any on here have experience calling Wolves. Do you hunt at night or daytime? What types of calls do you use? I was figuring pretty much the same as coyote but will also throw in some fawn bleats, etc.
Anything you can tell me will help while I am hoping for the season here.
Thanks!

I've called in quite a few over the years, with a regular hand held predator call ( jackrabbit or cottontail) and with a howler. The howler works really well if wolves are close by. There was a company in Montana that made them. They sent me one to try years ago and I still use it. Wolves are generally pretty easy to call. A fellow that used to guide with me became pretty famous because he would call wolves in with his mouth ( howling) on just about every hunt he guided. That same fellow went on a trip with a good friend of mine this past fall. They went up to my friends trapline to do some work on the roof. During their stay this guy howled in two different wolves and my buddy was able to get both of them. I've never hunted them at night because its illegal here, but Im sure it would be an effective strategy. I do use my howler from the cabin at night sometimes if wolves are in the area. My strategy with that is to bring them off the ridges during the night where my sets are.
Good luck!

I have both of the howlers mentioned here, the top one is the easiest to use and my favorite.

I wonder if using a coyote decoy would help

I’ve called in 3 in my life. Two were called in with howling. We waited in a stand of trees and howled. A black came in first ended up about 40 feet from us. One shot then more howling and a white came in. The other time was with a rabbit in distress call. Had a red fox coming in and my cousin butterhead said wait. We could see a set of eyes coming down the trail behind the fox. Turned out to be an ancient old female with a nasty old set of teeth

When I call wolves in I use a cow elk call, coyote diaphragm, recorded coyote sounds or my voice howling. Around here they also really come in when pup yelping sounds are made, either wolf or coyote, and I have had luck with cow elk sounds, too. It takes attention off of me hiding in the brush or uphill if I have some lure like wolf pee to use when howling or calling. I also use an old coonskin cap anchored to a straightened wire hanger shoved into the snow. I have had them come in when we are weaning foals, too, but I haven't done any whinnying in the woods yet. I also use the lay of the land, and try to get high above a drainage or bowl so I can see good and also to help the sounds carry.
