Removing fleas

So I used to spray all my critters with raid to remove the fleas but last year I started hanging my critters to remove the fleas because a friend of mine recommended that.  The thing I like about this method is I hate using raid on my hides.  That stuff is so nasty and I hate getting it on my skin when I am skinning.  I have two questions.  #1) How many on here are using this method?  #2) What have you found is the optimal time period to hang the critters remove the fleas?  My friend says a week to 10 days.  I'm just curious what other people are doing.

I do it a couple weeks to get rid of mine and its probably colder here. The other way instead of spraying the critter is get a garbage bag swing it to inflate it and spray the raid in there and then put your critter in I never spray the animal directly.

I usually skin the weekends catch starting the following week. Rarely are there live fleas unless our temps are staying above 5 to 10.

This is what I do with my critters. We do not have the cold temps to encourage fleas and mites to leave the animals here so chemical encouragement is the route I take.

I don't like the oily residue that spray-on insecticides like Raid leave on fur.

I much prefer insecticide POWDER. I don't use the low potency powder from the pet store. I get the heavy duty kind from a veterinarian or a good farm feed/supply store.

Powder the carcass, work powder into the underfur, and put in a plastic garbage bag for a few hours. Then take the bag off, brush out the fur to remove the powder and VOILA..... it's all good.

I just hang them up out side and hit them with air from the compressor real good . When I skin I see none or very little at all . Plus it drys them and fluffs them up.

Nitrile gloves? Raid is nasty, so are lynx fleas. Nothing like skinning a warm carcass -- when possible.

never gets cold enough here to hang them that long or you get green belly. I use a canvas sack with permithan dust not sure if that is spelled right. it is a pesticide chemical that is used for different insects. I throw them in the sack with a can of that mixed in and shake them over the bag when I take them out and no fleas. I last most of the year and cheaper than Raid. Also raid would make me cough up a lung. I clean the bag once a year and it is amazing how many fleas are in there.

Also no need to keep your Raid warm so it sprays when you use permithian

I am religious about using Raid in the early part of the season. " Let us spray" ! But by December I let everything freeze hard for a week as long as it's below zero. It will take a couple of days for a wolverine to freeze completely at 25 below

I use a shop vac. works great.

Some years are worse than others.
I do like Hankit,but when the fur is dead outdoors at cold temps for a few days the fleas leave the carcass.

pop a moth ball in that shop vac for some fumigation afterwards.


wrong answer, many flea species can be frozen and come back to life.

I did a series of on 5 flea species found on red squirrels at -17C freeze thaw/ over several weeks up to a month
some were through 5 cycles. and came out fighting.
Now granted there are numerous species of fleas and the wild animals but do you want you butt chewed on

The dust on a burlap sac is a good idea. Save any plastic mattress cover you find the 10 mm plastic is toe puncture proff

I read an article in national geographic about fleas I think they have identified 138 species of fleas in the world. There were amazing facts about those little critters how many times there body length they could jump and diseases they carried very informative article. Only ones that seem to bite me or even get on me are from fox and always get my ankles and waist.

Danvee those fox fleas are probably Pulex irritans regular known common name of[b] human flea[/b] small triangular and black would fit the bill.

I think there are well over that 138 number, that was probably for what had been found on one species of animal.

Most of the research is always centered around the disease vector especially the plague which was bad in the west in the 1930's before medications were developed to counter-act the disease.
With c-19 out break there has been they have found that an old disease has re-surfaced with the human louse population in the homeless people. It was named in the 1st World War....Trench fever

I know one thing they itch like heck and give you love for a long time, worse than no seeums.
