Board of Game needed support

Board of Game needed support - 02/16/21 05:48 PM

Lets all participate in getting our friend and fellow trapper Lynn Keogh though the conformation process. He was appointed last year by Governor to serve on the Board of Game. His first hearing will be held in Senate Resources Committee at 3:30 pm on Friday the 19th. You can call in and give your personal testimony by calling 1-844-586-9085, tell the operator you wish to give testimony for the confirmation of board of game appointments. Or you can send in written comments to the committee members of Senate Resources. These are the committee members, http://www.akleg.gov/basis/Committee/Details/32?code=SRES
this is the link for Public Opinion Messages. https://www.akleg.gov/poms/
As you know the anti trapper crowd will be opposing him, so lets show our Senators we are a bigger voice! Also let your local Senator know your thoughts. Protecting our trapping opportunities start with us as individuals and what we do to protect our lifestyles.

I gather that would be due to his guiding?
Did a quick search, but found nothing relevant to the RHA opposition.

There are crappy guides and there are good guides. Lynn is a good guide and a good person.

Too bad RHAK is preoccupied with hatred for all guides and refuses to think about wildlife conservation and hunting opportunity for ALL hunters. The group has very selfish and short-sighted goals.

Dear RHAK Members,

RHAK is opposing Governor Dunleavy's appointments of two more guides -- Lynn Keogh & Jake Fletcher -- to the Board of Game. Hearings on these appointments are this Friday, Feb. 19th, in the Senate Resources committee.

We need your help! Please contact Senate Resources with emails and calls and oppose these appointments! Adding two more guides to the Board of Game will completely unbalance the board in favor of commercial interests!

Contact info is below. Scroll down to read excerpt of RHAK letter to Senate Resources for an idea of why we are opposing the two guide appointees. Please call or email with any questions.

I agree Pete, I would prefer it be a balance of guides and non guides but Lynn is good people and I hope he wont be biased when making important decisions.

Re: Board of Game needed support - 02/17/21 08:17 PM

I am puzzled why RHAK would not support Lynn, when he was the only board member that supported their proposal, that wanted the BOG not to be able to change or amend the intent of a proposal. Jan. 21, 2021, Public Request for Board Policy on Amendment Process.

VERY surprised to se Mike McCrary's name on there!
It can't be the same one that ran "outfitting" for a couple decades.

Re: Board of Game needed support - 02/18/21 05:48 PM

"RHAK was largely formed over resident hunter dismay at how our current Alaska Board of Game (BOG) has been managing allocation of our game resources and how the Board seems inclined to favor the big game guide industry over the resident hunter. We, along with the public and many Fish & Game Advisory Committees, believe the Alaska BOG has also overstepped its authority and subverted the public process.

It is well known by the BOG that unlimited nonresident sheep hunting opportunity along with the unlimited big game guides most nonresidents are required to hire, has been causing biological harm to our Dall Sheep populations and restrictive drawing hunts for all. Currently nonresident guided sheep hunters take 60-80% of our sheep annually in some areas. Statewide the nonresident guided sheep harvest is 40% annually. Clearly our Alaska constitution and our statutes and regulations intend for Alaskans to have a priority to our game resources. But over the last decade, resident hunters’ appeals to the BOG to limit nonresident sheep hunters has resulted in no action taken by the Board, rather the Board requests more money for more studies related to a problem they themselves have publicly agreed is happening.

Sheep issues are the tip of the iceberg. Without a clear statutory resident priority to our game resources Alaskan hunters are in danger of losing hunting opportunities to restrictive draw-only hunts brought on by BOG inaction until the only course of action is to limit all hunters. RHAK is unapologetically pro-Resident and we seek to work with the administration and legislators to secure a long overdue resident priority to our game resources for future generations of Alaskans through clarification and amendment of our current laws. "

This explains why most of the names I recognize smell like sheep. Don't see them circling every clear day like I usta could.

Not too late to support Keyo.
Here is what I sent. Limited to 50 words or less:

Please support Lynn Keogh for the Board of Game. Lynn has a lifetime experience hunting, fishing and trapping in Alaska. Lynn has worked to resolve trapping conflicts. He has guided big game but is not an industry pawn. He is committed to serving. Thank You.

Re: Board of Game needed support - 02/18/21 08:21 PM

Thanks Dirt, for that review/policy statement. In the statement it only cites successful harvest by non-resident vs, resident. Why do they never cite how many residents went hunting for sheep vs. non-residents? I am sure you will find some very different numbers. You most likely find many times more residents went sheep hunting than non-residents. you will also find resident sheep hunters spent far less time in the field hunting sheep than non-residents(per hunter). So without researching a whole bunch more facts that effect why non-resident guided sheep hunters are more successful than residents i will leave it at that for a while.
