LIFE ON THE LINE

This winter past was long and cold. The snows came deep and quick.
The temperatures the worst I've seen, the ice froze way down thick.
Traveling was difficult, trails always drifted in.
The winds were bitter for a time, the hunting somewhat thin.

But the fur this year was real nice, the pelts all full and prime.
And I made it through another year; I had a grand old time.
The little cabin held the heat; the ax sharp as can be.
The friendly chickadees were here to keep me company.

But springtime is around the bend, the days are getting long.
The ducks and geese will show up soon, the woods resound with song.
Soon I must head out of here, when waters start to stir
And spend time at the trading post, where I can sell the fur.

But I don't need a lot of time in town among the strife.
I'll turn around quick as I can returning to my life
Among the creatures I admire, alongside those I know
That treat me as a part of the land, a place where I can grow.

I've found I don't do well among the bustle and the noise.
I don't need time in bars and such, getting rowdy with the boys.
I just need quiet solitude, beside some lonely stream
Where life is simple, I admit, but where a man can dream.

So long as I'm a healthy man and I can get along,
I'll do whatever I must do to stay where I belong
Where being alone is one thing; though lonely, certainly not!
There's a world of difference between the two; I like this life I've got.
