Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 11/20/24 09:51 PM
I have been seeing a nice fox at one of our dams at around 4:30 in the morning when I go to check traps.
I got a shot at him with the 22mag yesterday but I missed.
He was there again this morning so I put a couple of dirt holes in.
Also a lot of pigs around this dam so I might nab one of them.

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 11/30/24 11:38 PM
Ive never eaten them, they dont have much meat so i just use the carcasses for bait. Maybe if you get like 30 of them you can make some chimpy chili

How did you catch that one alive? Those are good sized rats, keep on catching them and keep an eye out for mink or weasel sign around where you're trapping them and maybe you can catch some bonus fur.
Posted By: TrapperE
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/02/24 03:38 PM
i caught the one alive because the water dropped a little bit
Nice looking rats, good job. I eat the red squirrels we have up here, they're pretty good just not much meat to be had.

Yeah I used to save money and get rat, mouse, pocket gopher, and mole traps at Fleet Farm and set em out. Only caught 1 pocket gopher before but I've shot a bunch of 13 lined ground squirrels though! (they're good for improving accuracy

)

It's definitely worth it to be able to have the title "Farm kid"! Although I've never cleaned pig pens before but I get hay and stuff for our horses
Posted By: TrapperE
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/26/24 01:09 PM
I will help my uncles bail hay in the summer a couple times. When the hay is stacked up in the straw barn then the coons will go up there and crap all over it so I trap the coons out of the barn
Posted By: CoyoteCowboy
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/26/24 02:21 PM
Nice! We have a horse who had a disease called EPM (Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis) which affects the spine, and how they get it is from eating hay that has possum droppings in it. I bet if trapping was banned, there would be a lot less horses around, 'cause EPM can be fatal if ya don't treat it.

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/26/24 06:37 PM
I've been trying to catch this one possum, his tracks are everywhere. My #1 coilspring froze over and I could see where he stepped on it. I've got 2 cage traps out for him too but he just avoids them. I have decided to sit up all night with the .17 and a flashlight and blast him if he shows up near the barn
Posted By: TrapperE
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/26/24 08:45 PM
Yeah I would go out at 10 or 11 with a shotgun and shine around till you see him, that’s what I do when I go possum or skunk hunting and I’m successful most of the time
Posted By: CoyoteCowboy
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/26/24 09:32 PM

Went out with the 20 gauge and a red flashlight for the possum... Nothin'. It was raining though, so maybe he was hunkered down in a hole or something.
Posted By: TrapperE
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/28/24 11:11 AM
Dang, if you find an old groundhog hole and set it good you will catch possums all season if it looks active, possums will travel around and hunker in a random hole at night so sometimes I walk along a fence row and find holes and set em and I usually catch a few possums. Then if I wait a week or two I routinely catch them. Possums are weird animals. You don’t need a red light to get close to them either, if you have a super bright flash light that is just as good. If you have crunchy leaves by where you think the possum is, walk near the crunchy leaves and see If you can heat anything walking on it. If you do run like heck at it till you see what it is then decide to shoot or no

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 12/28/24 03:06 PM

So, I went out to check my coyote/fox set (a scent post) with a Duke #1 3/4 coilspring, and when I got closer to the set I saw the trap, set off, with the chain stretched out. Do you think that I caught a coyote but he pulled out? The trap was brand new...

Mine is, work, get money, catch another yote, and get me a girl

Get some cage traps and start advertizing my business. I already got my deer I wanted. Also I want to make 5000 dollars this year with my business. Made 800 last year
What is your business? I'm kind of trying to start some kind of ADC-type business.

It’s ADC and I’m fully licensed to do it in the state of Ohio. Do yourself a favor and start with cage traps, I started using conibears and there was problems with doing so

In Wisconsin all you need is a trapping license and written permission from the landowner... No special license required

Note: Wildlife you may not shoot or trap under this provision are migratory birds, white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, turkeys, black bears, mountain lions, and any endangered species. Well, when I ran the line today, one of my cage trap's door was shut, and the bait door on the top of the trap was open.
Last night I had baited it with dog food, but I forgot to wire the bait door shut. Hard to believe a coon could get through that little bait door, but I guess he did

Nah there was a whole lot of dead grass that he pulled inside the trap which is a coon thing, plus there was big yellow droppings

Yellow is kind of a weird color for coon droppings but my 20 acres is surrounded by cornfields, he probably has been feasting on corn

mountain cur, she’s out of some world champion squirrel and coon dogs. Her drive to kill is so much, I caught a squirrel alive in a trap and it bit her and before I could react she grabbed the squirrel by the neck and shook it so much that its head was about to pop off. I tease her with the coons I catch while she’s in her kennel and she just barks and barks and jumps. I’m trying to get her in the woods every day after school

Here’s a nice dirthole I made, I used waxed dirt to bed it and for the hole I made it 1 inch around and I put a big glob of no bs lethal injection bait in it with some cavens Minnesota red on the back of it. For the trap setup I used MB 550 4 coiled with a wolf fang. The set looks really good with the snow

Made a dirt-hole set today with a Duke 1.75 and AuSable earth anchors. I put a little Caven's Minnesota Brand Predator Bait in the hole and Caven's Canine Force on the backing. Should have used a gland lure but I didn't have any handy
Didn't use waxed dirt, but it's dry so it shouldn't freeze.
Weird thing is, I tried to take a picture of the finished set but it was so cold my camera was frozen!!!

What does a good red pelt bring over there ?
We get a 20 dollar bounty from the property owners here ( my parents).
Still that’s nothing compared to dingos, the state north of me pays 100 dollars each, but have paid up to $500 for problem ones.
Btw I’m basically doing adc as the is no fur market here any more, hence trapping in summer.

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 01/16/25 11:40 PM
What are those? I can't make it out

Red fox
What does a good red pelt bring over there ?
We get a 20 dollar bounty from the property owners here ( my parents).
Still that’s nothing compared to dingos, the state north of me pays 100 dollars each, but have paid up to $500 for problem ones.
Btw I’m basically doing adc as the is no fur market here any more, hence trapping in summer.
20 a fox is crazy, a skinned and put up fox round me gets a 15 dollar average

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 01/16/25 11:41 PM
Wow!! Around here you could get maybe $40 for a nice red, but it would have to be VERY nice

Average you could get about $15-$20 for one.
40 for a nice red? That seems pretty high but I don’t know

To be perfectly honest I have never caught one. I live just inside the dingo fence so we have very few in my area now.there used to be more when I was little but the fence has been maintained better lately.
We had some hanging around 2 years ago and I was trying to trap them but I was unsuccessful. We might have 1 on the place every few years now.
It is my New Year’s resolution to trap a dingo this year though.
from what I have heard they are pretty similar to coyotes as far as trapping goes, except that you need a bigger trap.
number 2s seem to be about the bare minimum people use.
I know of people who use mb750s for dingos though.

Went with a tiny hole cause I can’t make a bigger one, the ground is froze solid, I only put one thing down the hole, blackies blend brushfire or bushmaster or something like that, it’s lure so it’s strong smelling and with our negative temps I figured I needed something strong

Not in the cage trap yet but I’m gonna use a super weak zero for them cause the stupid birds and rabbits get caught in my cages faster then squirrels. I need to get my pup in the woods cause she is treeing squirrels on her own. She is out of some big name dogs too.

All the work with my dog paid off, she sight treed this one which isn’t that impressive for a 7 1/2 month old pup then she struck a track and ran 200 yards and her e collar tells me when she’s treeing and I got the treeing notification and then I heard her barking really loud for like 5 minutes which was so cool to hear and by the time we got there she was still barking and I was getting her tied to the tree so when she grabbed the squirrel she won’t just run off with it cause that’s a bad habit of hers and the squirrel jumped out to the tree and ran off. This was her first time in a woods and not just being walked in a patch of trees.

It may sound weird to you guys, but my squirrel dog is a Lhasa Opsa. She was never trained to tree squirrels, she just picked it up on her own. She will go, tree a squirrel, and then wait for me to come out and shoot it for her. And even though she is small, she is very good at it!

She does both. She always seems to know when a squirrel is in a tree or if they aren’t there. She will hunt ‘til she drops! Does that answer your question?
Maybe I can get a picture for you next week.

So just looked it up, apparently what we call "red squirrels" is technically an Eastern Fox Squirrel, often called red squirrels. Ironically, the Eastern squirrels have red bellies whereas red ones have white.

Hey Ethan09, what kind of cool critters can you shoot in Australia? Can you shoot wallabies?
Posted By: Ethan09
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/03/25 02:08 AM
We can’t shoot wallabies over here as they are pretty rare.
We can shoot kangaroos, provided we get tags first.
They issue tags to land owners a hundred or so at a time because sometimes the numbers build up and we some times have numbers of up to 100 per square mile.
Aside from Roos we can hunt: rabbits , hare, foxes, dingoes, feral pigs, feral goats,7 species of deer, feral camels, water buffalo, banteng, and scrub bulls.
For birds we can hunt pigeons, crow, several kinds of duck, magpie geese and quail.
Some game farms also have elk, pheasants and turkey.
Aside from the game birds, all the animals I listed are introduced pests and have no seasons or tags.

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/03/25 05:53 AM

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/04/25 10:26 AM
In Alaska a Wildlife Trooper is what most states call a game warden. They are in charge of making sure all Federal and State game regulations are being followed. They also have the authority to arrest people for non-wildlife crimes.
An Alaska State Trooper is just what it sounds like. A statewide law enforcement officer. They are the state’s main law enforcement agency. They handle traffic violations and criminal activity.

When does trapping season end for yall? Fur trapping ends at the end of February for coons and fox and stuff like that but muskrats go till march 15 and then after that yall will start seeing pics of my nuisance lines and on July first (turtle opener) i will post some pics of what im running for turtles. Yall going to do anything related to trapping in the summer?

Set lines for turtles hopefully. Our turtle opener is July 15
Posted By: CoyoteCowboy
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/09/25 02:04 PM
They are pretty bad when they build up in big numbers, which they are starting to do, but the little ones are ridiculously cute so I was kinda sad to see this little one.
As far as eating goes, roo meat is very similar to venison in terms that it has almost no fat. It has a nice flavour to it and makes great steak or jerky.
The most meat on them is the back straps, tail and legs (surprise surprise

)
The best eating ones are the young bucks as the big ones can be a bit rank some times.
They sure do look awfully cute in the pictures I've seen of em!!!!

Most of the animals season ends at the end of February. So that’s my finish date. I will probably spend the summer resupplying with gear and boiling traps. Usually around the middle of October is when I set a bunch of rabbit snares so I can use them for bait.

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/09/25 10:16 PM

Well I really like jerky so I marinate it in either barbecue sauce and mixed herbs or salt ,pepper and chili sauce, then it goes in the dehydrator for a while. Roo meat is great for jerky because you don’t have to trim the fat off.
Or we will just slice it and fry it in a pan like a beefsteak.
yum!

ive caught over 60 coon in them in the past 2 years. i dont have anyone helping me set either. feels great to be running a 100 percent independent trapline

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/11/25 05:33 PM
only caught one possum in them and ive only caught 2 skunks in them. they are the best trap for coons if you want to set quick. you ever used them coyotecowboy?
Yup I have four of em but don't use em all that much, I've caught most my coons in cage traps

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/11/25 07:12 PM
man cage traps round here get flipped over by coons, the sides get chewed out by coons and they bend them all up. we have some big coons round here. you should set dps more, they are an amzing tool for coon cachin

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/11/25 07:20 PM
I stake em down pretty good so they can't flip em over, and I guess they don't like chewin' on em round here

That one I got a bit ago was a 17 pounder, probably not the biggest one i've ever caught though

I'm planning on getting a bunch of No BS DPs cuz they're actually pretty affordable and plus they come with those replica wolf fang anchors
Posted By: TrapperE
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/11/25 11:11 PM
Yeah those are nice but you end up spending ALOT of time trying to get them out when the time comes to pull the fangs if you have hard ground, round here I have to dig them up they hold so well. I pulled one out by hand and it was staked in a creek so that’s why I was able to get it out. I tried cable extensions and they are great if you have cinder blocks or big chunks of metal or trees around

Yeah, I have AuSable cable stakes for my yote traps and I ain't getting them out til spring!

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/12/25 01:14 AM
The biggest thing we can catch around here is wolves. When you set a trap or snare for them, you better have it tied down tight or they will snap small chain and wire. They have been known to deform a #5 foothold trap to unusable shapes! One of my friends had a wolves break a 1/4” quick-link that was tack welded to a chain. Wolverine are almost just as bad. My grandpa had a Wolverine in a 330 hold right behind the head, and it still fought enough to break 9 gauge wire before dying 25 feet away.

But when you trap marten, you barely have to tie the wire down because they don’t fight much. (Especially if their head get caught inside a 120 coni

)

I used to not stake down conis at all and I never had a problem with it but I started doing it for my business so I didn’t lose and ghogs, the traps I use are so big tho that like if it don’t kill them they can’t go anywhere

Well caught a skunk in a cage trap that’s uncovered and very big so he was spraying everywhere when I got about 50 yards away from him. Not sure how I’m going to take care of him but I will think of something

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/15/25 05:33 PM
Best to let them rest for a few hours before approaching it again. It's probably over tired from being up all night trying to get out of the trap. Let them sleep it off for a few hours, then you should be able to approach it. I've do this in the past and the second time around the skunk was much calmer and easier to deal with.

Well, yote, fox, and coon trapping season ended on the 15th for me so I've snapped most of my traps. I'm gonna pull them in a few days. I like to stick close to the trapping season even though I can trap year round on my own property.

I'm gonna order a few colony traps and a bunch of 1.5 coils for muskrats soon and next year I'll be trapping the river as well as my property. I'm looking forward to next trapping season already

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/20/25 07:03 PM
dont order colony traps, make em! muskrats are my favorite and they are still in seaso here. honestly if i were you i would buy cheap victor number 2 square jaws because they hold muskrats really high on the leg and drown them without drowners, just use a long cable or wire. also scout your muskrat spots to make sure there is runs or holes to put the colonies into and make sure there is places to set the footholds for the muskrats. i made the mistake of buying abunch of skrat footholds and there is rarley any slides to set them on. muskrats prime up in the spring so if you can trap them on your property then try and catch some within the next month or so. use any conibear from a 110 up to a 220 in a run or use any weak foothold.

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 02/21/25 12:04 AM
The only muskrat I trapped was one that had burrowed into my grandparents septic hill. You can imagine the problems that would cause! Needless to say, he didn’t stay long!

Oh boy my first box trap was so bad. This trap sucks but I have a resivoir that has so many small bluegill so I will set it there and just pull it up every ten minutes and I know it will catch. Im so dissapointed ngl I spent money and time to fail… again… and again… even more… yep keep goin. Litterly every single thing I’ve made of wire has failed. My colony traps worked but I had a mink in one and he bent the door all the way out and it was 16 gauge wire and it was a long door was it would have been hard to bend out

1 inch by 2 inch is what I use and the one colony trap I love is as made from like 10 gauge wire. If you could buy a peice of 1 inch by 2 inch wire that is like the same gauge as hog panel it will keep its shape better and is easier to work with then flimsy wire

No I havnt trapped there since I had the bend out. I assume mink because we have a good amount of mink around me and last year I picked up a 3 pound mink that had been hit on the road in the same ditch I’m trapping. Also I saw guys on YouTube use the same wire I was and he was catching skrats

actully it isnt as easy as you think. they blend in so crazy well with brush and stuff. id argue that its easier hunting cottontails without snow if your hunting them in a brushy place. snow makes it hard to see there fur

I have a dogtra pathfinder 2 mini for her, it’s cheaper and it works well, the big difference between the one I have and a garmin is the garmins you need a special 600 dollar handheld device just to use it but the dogtra uses my phone and a receiver. The receiver is the correction maker too and I can correct her with gloves on

Are dingo pelts worth anything?
Posted By: CoyoteCowboy
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 03/06/25 02:28 PM
Put new suspension in my car a couple days ago.
Got a couple fox sets out, and will put more out tomorrow.
Also the professional trapper on the national park that borders us to the north, shot 4 dingos about 20 kms north of us.
The ranger on the park told us he saw a large dingo at a waterhole 4 kms north of our boundary, and there was tracks within sight of our boundary.
I put 2 traps out for it not far from the boundary fence( on our side of course) so maybe I might get him soon. I also got a shot at a fox this morning but missed.
I will put some more pics up tomorrow.
I have a bit of an update on this.
I some how managed to break the rear suspension in my car, so there goes another 300 bucks

.
In other news. The dingoes have moved south and are now watering at a dam on our place.
They have attacked a few of our sheep in that same paddock as well.
I put out 5 sets at this dam last night but did not catch any thing.
This dam is a good location as it is the only water for a 10 km radius, so it is a magnet in this hot weather.
Today I went down there to see if I could find their tracks leading to and from the dam.
I found the tracks and also a scent post that they have been using so I put a trap there. If this doesn’t work I will do an all night stake out for them with the .223 and my thermal spotter.
That is gonna take some coffee!

Judging by the amount of damage, I would guess there is between 2-4 dingoes.
I’ll keep you posted.
Good luck on those dingoes! Do you have a thermal scope too, or do you use a light? What kind of thermal spotter do you have?

Are dingo pelts worth anything?
My state will pay 10 bucks per dingo scalp, but my mother has a friend who is interested in buying fox and rabbit pelts and fox skulls from me, so I’ll see if she wants dingo hides as well

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 03/07/25 01:48 AM
Dingo scalp? Or a dingo skull?
Posted By: Ethan09
Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 03/07/25 03:07 AM
The state pays for the scalp, which is the skin off the top of the head and a 2 inch strip of skin down the back, and the tail.
They used to want the head skin only but they had issues with people faking them.

Pretty easy if your In a woods that dosnt have alot of brush. There was two but the other one kept biting my boot and trying to bite my hand when I grabbed him. The big guy in the pic just kinda sat there and played dead when I grabbed him. They were eating on the rotten guts of a dead coon

A fancy name for a possum

Oh! You got me on that one. Never seen an opossum either!

I've only got possums this season. Me and my dad found some nice roadkill though. 2 minks, 5 coons, a skunk.
What do you catch up in alaska?

We don’t have an official bounty here for foxes but there is government talk about a 10-20 dollar one soon.
We have a huge fox problem in Australia.
I heard of a feller on the east coast of my state (NSW) who had a 100 acre farm that he shot 100 foxes on in 6 months. From memory he wasn’t even using thermal or anything, just shooting during the day.

Yall going to do anything related to trapping in the summer?

i just got a crossbow this year and i hate it, it seems to finicky
yep! That's how I felt about mine last year
Crossbows are the most accurate thing. You can split an arrow if u have a good rest.

Yeah, most of them but mine's an old Barnett Quad 400. Heavy, wide, clumsy and not accurate. The newer models are crazy though!!

Why crossbows are shooting way faster than a bow.

Speaking of 80lb draw weight, has anyone heard from NTO recently? I sent him a PM like 8 months ago but I haven't heard from him

Oh nice! How do you make squirrel snares? Just wire with a noose or do you use cable and locking swivels and stuff?

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 10/14/25 04:46 AM
it's just 24-gauge brass wire with a noose on the end, its pretty effective on a snare pole.

Re: 24 -25 trapping thread - 10/17/25 02:36 PM
Here it's only legal to use a snare if it's half underwater (which doesn't really work if you're targeting rabbits and squirrels lol). It is legal to use cable restraints on land, but only for fox, coyote, and bobcat. I really think they should change the regs so that you can use a snare on land no larger than like 18" circumference or something. like 6"x6".

Cuz then it would be hard to catch a dog or cat in a snare that small, but it would be a good size for small game I think
