Best Picks for coyote and beaver trapping DVDs?

Best Picks for coyote and beaver trapping DVDs? - 10/17/17 02:55 AM

Ok I know this has to be a question that had been asked, however DVDs are an always evolving medium.
What trappers make the best DVDs?
Who are your favorites, and why?
Which guys are the most thorough?
Which DVDs have the best content?

I'll be picking up a couple DVDs one coyote, one beaver.
I would just choose some based off of random supply shop reviews but there are literally 100s of DVDs on these topics from a few dozen trappers.
And they are not cheap..

I recently got to see demos from Rusty Johnson, Wayne Derrick, and Lee Stinemeyer that were packed full of info. So I'm interested in checking out some other videos.
So if y'all would share your thoughts, reviews, and ideas on trappers and their DVDs for these two target animals it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Ken Smith

I have coyote videos from several trappers, not a dudd in the bunch. But the ones I learned the most from where from Mark June and Rusty Johnson, Wayne Derrick, and Andy Weiser. You may also want to consider some instruction in print. Two very good books by Ed Schneider, [Coyote Trapping Proven Methods from Kansas and One Square Mile]. Also Slim Pedersens Problems and Solution series are highly informative. Jc Conner's dvd's are also full of info. Hope this helps.

Yes that does help. I was very impressed with Rusty Johnson, however I cannot find a DVD one of his. Would you happen to know where I might find his information?
I believe Andy Weiser only has the one coyote DVD that I could find, it is in the running for sure.

Nevermind... A little bit of reading and it is clear that Rusty is in Mark June's DVDs.

Casey Payne & Trent Masterson - Trapping the High Plains is a good one too, Lee Ruewsaat, Matt jones, Dobbins & Dunlap are some others.

I'll look into these guys. I am definitely considering Lee Reuwsaat's DVD, he was a pretty cool guy, and I have seen some great reviews or his skills here on Trapperman..

If anyone knows of a good beaver trapping DVDs with a good amount of info on foot holds please let me know

Thanks

All the above and Land Trapping Techniques by Charles Dobbins. I read that book till the pages fell out. His beaver book is real good too. I've learned something useful from every DVD or book I ever read!

I've never seen any beaver trapping videos, but Andy Weiser is the best I saw for western coyotes and Randy Smith is the best for Eastern/Midwestern Coyotes. Good luck with your next buy. Its hard to go wrong with anyone who makes their living off trapping.

I've watched ALOT of videos and Mark June's 1st yote video is my favorite and learned a ton. Now,I haven't seen Andy or Wayne Derricks. To be honest I have good luck with June's methods. At some point too many DVDS could be a curse trying to mesh too many different styles.Little tricks are great to pick up but I always go back to June's methods

Dobbins for beaver-

I would not get either. Instead, get a copy of Charlie Dobbins book "Beaver and Otter Trapping" and also Hal Sullivans Otter 2000 and his beaver book. Everything you need to learn is in those copies.

Re: Best Picks for coyote and beaver trapping DVDs? - 10/18/17 03:09 AM

I will pick up both books.. they are both pretty cheap from Minnesota trap at the moment. So they will be a great read k am sure.
I am thinking about Andy Weiser's DVD vs. Mark June's set vs. Lee Reuwsaat's coyote set. Seems like a lot of cash to put out for a few DVDs. However doing a bit of research you can see that there is well over 15 hours of expert coyote trapping advise in all 3 of their DVDs sets.
I can only afford one DVD up front. So looks like June's reducing the numbers will be first followed by Weiser's Western coyote trapping. That DVD is 3 hours long. Well worth the 40$ to get it.

Still want info on what DVDs you folks prefer and why.

Thanks

Andy Weiser and Lee Reuwsaat dvd are top notch. Trent Masterson and Casey Payne's dvd is a waste of money.

LDW, can you give us more info on the Casey Payne and Trent masterson video? Thanks!

Re: Best Picks for coyote and beaver trapping DVDs? - 10/18/17 07:47 PM

The only problem I had with the Casey Payne DVD was the constant ad placements flashing in the bottom right of the picture. I know you gotta pay the bills but don’t make us sit through a 2 1/2 hr commercial . It was super annoying.

I watched it again this morning. I guess its not as bad as I first thought. Still not one of my favorites.

I am a big mark june fan. His sets are simple and make sense, i like his coyote and bobcat dvds. He keeps me interested though the hole dvd. I just got kyle kaatz water trapping dvd so i will see how it is.

Mark June for the win.
Still need a good beaver DVD.
I have been reading the archives lately and it is a fact that Paul Dobbins has a ton of beaver info. So his book will be here soon.

I'll second dekalb. DVD worth getting.

I'll also say that dobbins books are top shelf learning material. Money well spent.

If Red O'Hearn has anything that I don't own, I will buy it when I find out about it. That guy has a gift for teaching.

Sorry, but I'm no writer. There'll be no book written by me. I did participate in a beaver video with dad, and then after his death, I made a beaver video.

Wow lol! In my line of work it shows when a person is green, I guess that's true in all walks of life... Even here on Trapperman

I apologise for the mix up, and appreciate the correction. The book I have in my MTP cart does say Charles Dobbins.
Seems the Apple doesn't fall too far from the tree anyways.
Thanks

Best dvds for beaver (imho) that cover snaring, footholds, and bodygrips would be:
Open water beaver trapping by Charles Dobbins/Wayne Freeberseyser, beaver sites and sets by Paul Dobbins, and matt jones beaver dvd.
Dale Billinsgley and Jeff Dunlop have some good all around dvds also

Honestly, June's coyote dvd is really good and he teaches very well. But I would compare Weisers video to a Mark June video on steroids. The nontarget catches are pretty cool, too.

Re: Best Picks for coyote and beaver trapping DVDs? - 10/20/17 10:43 PM

All of the DVDs mentioned are pretty darn good. You really cannot go wrong with a instructional DVD by most of the big name guys. Each guys may have a trick or two that you can add to your methods if you choose to.

Wiser shows some methods that make a lot of sense. He shows some preseason work that if one did not know about this it would cost them.
Andy is admittedly old school. I like old school. I really like Andy's DVD

Ray Milligan has some great DVDs. I don't think he traps wicked hard anymore but that does not matter, That guy knows how to put up some catches.

Someone mentioned June's DVDs. He has quite a few and they are all good, but I really like his last one the best. The one he did with Johnson. I always try to look at the DVDs from a beginners view point. The last one he did he filmed a bit different. Usually when demonstrators make a set the take a lot of time and explain it. June and Johnson both explained and showed what they were doing very well but they did it like it was on a working line. And they are fast. I think this helps a beginner gain a little insight to the speed factor. You need to pay attention because he stresses a lot of points that are worth noting. Mark is a lot more chipper than I could ever be but I think he is a good teacher.

Some of the big mouth chest beaters have put down his coyote DVD but I am a Johnny Thorpe fan and liked his canine DVDs. Could be because I trap a lot of area that looks like the dack's. Plus Johnny was pretty old school. If I had a choice to trap with someone like those back biting, sniping dudes with the elementary school attitudes or Thorpe, I would pick a guy like Thorpe hands down.

Someone not mentioned above is Graham. Pretty good coyote trapper right there.
Dunlap has some good ideas on his coyote DVD.

If you listen close you learn some cool stuff off Derrick's DVD. (He also has some on gray fox and two on cats, all good)

I think Jeff Dunlap has a good way of teaching. I even broke down and bought is beginning coyote DVD because I was bored and there was nothing new out. Good job.
Beaver?
I really like Jeff Dunlap's beaver DVD. Charles Dobbins DVD is very good. I have not seen a bunch on under ice work but Trapper Art made a very good under ice snaring DVD.

A guy that people forget it is James Lord. He has put out some excellent canine, cat and beaver DVDs.

Probably a bunch more that I have forgot.

Hope this helps.

Re: Best Picks for coyote and beaver trapping DVDs? - 10/20/17 11:09 PM

Milligan explains his location theory very well on his Art Of The 2 Inch Circle DVD. Down to earth and full of common sense methods. The man has caught over 6,000 coyotes in his career, when Ray talks I listen. The series includes a DVD on Cats and another on Fox. All filmed on his ranch and leases in Northern New Mexico from river bottom to timber line.

The key is to learn techniques, equipment, and locations you can use and create you own methods that fit you and your geography, then create your own system.

This is great advice IMHO.
Andy, Wayne, and Casey have all put out great information, no matter your area.
A couple that I have learned from that have not been mentioned are Scott Welch (coyotes) and Clint Locklear (beaver).

Randy Smith "coyote's and combines" for me. Mainly because he has the same soil and locations as We do here in central MN. Watching a person bed a trap in sand don't interest me.

Reviving this thread. I'm in the market for some coyote trapping DVD's. In a few weeks I will be home with a newborn for a bit and will have some time to watch. I'm torn between Mark June and Wiser. For someone with some coyotes experience would you recommend the 1st or 2nd volume of Mark's?

Ken can you give us a review of the DVD's you ended up with?

Don't forget the video Coyotes by the Thousands . By Pete and Ron Leggett.
Posted By: star flakes

Re: Best Picks for coyote and beaver trapping DVDs? - 04/07/18 12:10 AM

Ditto on the Legett's work. Their production on the line out west and production quality is very good.

But for your choices, all first volumes are basics and second always is the additional sets. There are not any secrets in this as it is always as Ray Milligan said in vertical and horizontal location, location, location and one main set and a change up if needed. As you are going to be sitting around waiting for a baby to cry, I would go for the video which has the most coyotes caught as that is what will keep you interested.

Well I ordered Mark June's and Ed Schneider's coyote dvd for now plus a few books on mountain man history and predator sets. Should be here just in time for the baby. I will take a few days off to help her and I go crazy just sitting around.
