First year trapping. 2 red fox in 3 days. 1 male and 1 female. I've been so excited and waiting for this since I took the state required trapping class in August. Now I'm getting to have fun and enjoy. Still getting outsmarted by those dang coyotes tho.

I’m jealous of everyone so far!! I wanna get out there and start haha. We don’t start for another month here and another 2 months for beaver and coyotes. But nice job so far, looking good catching fur the first couple nights out.

Birth tree, those beaver look really dark like almost black. Are they or are they just wet and look like that?

Gotta spend time skinning tonight. First 2 of the year. Made 10 sets on Sunday just because I needed to. Gotta go to Owosso to work next week so didn't put full line out. May take a handful of traps with me. Anyone in Owosso area that wants to go out let me know. Don't know area very well.

@ swick3, yes they are jet black, I was sad to see that big boy in my trap, I was hoping to catch a large black one to go on the wall in my boy's room with the black bear rug hanging up! I may get lucky and catch a bigger one after the regular season opens up when it will be all mine!

Kenai, yes that is a mink box stuck in a dam by the support pole. The water came high after a rain, and the box was flooded,so I put in fresh bait and stuck it in the dam beside a tag alder to keep the bait fresh and dry.Not normally the way I would set but I was in a hurry that day, lol.

Re: 2017/18 season picture thread - 10/30/17 08:06 PM

No picture today, the wind was fierce and it was a major struggle to paddle my little boat to the traps and back to the landing. 18 more rats today, I would have moved some unproductive sets if not for the heavy winds. I am wondering just how worth it it is to double set everything? While I have gotten several doubles, most of the sets have singles and even singles with two traps on them (one on the head and one on the leg or tail). Thursday I will move sets around if the wind isn't too bad. The wind and waves are tearing up feed beds and toilets bad!

Re: 2017/18 season picture thread - 11/03/17 01:17 PM

These coon ended up in beaver sets. I had a bunch of 330s on some dam breaks and when nothing came to repair the dams for a few days I told the landowner, he promptly took and backhoe and took out the dams hich dropped the water level by a lot, exposing my other sets on slides. The result was these 3 coons in beaver sets and when I told the landowner he tweaked a little and told me not to kill his coons because he likes them, I explained what happened and he didn't say a word. I do not think I will be going back to this property next year.

In Wisconsin you have to have a tag to keep a bobcat. And where I am it takes quite a few years to get a tag from what I understand. The DNR is doing a study on bobcats, so if you catch one and don't have a tag, there is a number you can call and they will come out and sedate the cat. Then they take temperature, tooth size, ear tag, and collar it. It was a very very cool experience. Major props to the WDNR and their bobcat collaring team. It was a very educational and fun experience. Especially for a newbie like me.

Took my 3-year-old son trapping yesterday, it took us 6 hours to put in 6 sets but we had fun doing it (even with the frustrations). This was our first set we made, I picked the location and let him pick the trap from the pile of traps I had with us, he touched the trap and walked all over the area and we still caught this beautiful large gray fox. I made this just a pee post set using the little pine tree as the post. The Bridger 1.75 with about 3-4lbs pan tension caught him in the center of the pad.

The farmer cut the corn and knife plowed it all up good, need to check sign there but he hasn't been able to plow up the bean field yet (he asked me to wait to put anything out in the field till he could knife it up on the outer edges) I don't think he will get to do the bean field now but we will see! Thursday I will be setting the corn field.

Re: 2017/18 season picture thread - 12/06/17 03:26 AM

The wife figured out how to post pics for me on the computer. Couldn't make it without her. had 4 yotes in 3 checks on 3 farms. Farms are 40acre,60acre,and 20. I'm happy with the results for what land I'm trapping. Hopefully its a good sign to come when I can set my larger properties after deer season goes out

Re: 2017/18 season picture thread - 12/06/17 02:55 PM

20 yards from yesterday's female

34lbs male. Guessing her mate

Not a sign of mange on him. I really figured he was going to have it, along with any others I caught on this property

Re: 2017/18 season picture thread - 12/06/17 06:25 PM

Pulled 8 sets of the one farm and had just a few to check this morning including the beaver culvert set, Got him 3rd night, my first true under ice beaver lol, he was bigger than I expected around 30lbs a bit more maybe, my son is 40lbs. this was the grinner we caught in my set that took the gray and a very fat coon.

Tough conditions here temps in the teens at night. Freezing all in ground sets and we can't run CRs until January which I suck at anyway

So as long as I have a few inches of snow. Traps with drags put in walkways it us for me

Been slow going on the snare line this year. Had some issues with #265 Senneker break aways opening up resulting in the loss of 2 coyotes and had 3 more chew out, so last night's check was a welcome change. Hope we get some snow soon to get things up and moving a little bit more then what they have been.

Love them reds in the snow.

I haven't caught a single fox yet this season, seems as the seasons go by they are harder and harder to find around here. Seen only two sets of what appeared to be fox tracks but they where in snow that had been drifted over a little

Started a new property that I thought may produce some but only coyotes so far

Thanks! If you got to go out of state to catch a cat, id suggest going further west. Ya we do occasionally get awesome cats here, but they have way better cats further west. Alot of ours here have bad bridge bellies, however this is one of the better cats for our area

Re: 2017/18 season picture thread - 02/08/18 06:01 PM

She sure is a pretty one Possumcatcher, looks like you had a good season, nice job!

Things are that slow here Michigan Trapper, I pulled all my canine sets after Christmas, 6 weeks and only the 1 coyote so I cut my losses, ran some rat traps with the boy for fun and people keep yanking my traps out of the huts and not making it worth it, had 0 luck with the short mink line so pulled them too! This was my best season by far and I will be getting ready for some spring beaver trapping when the ice is out. As my kids get older and start Kindergarten I will hit the trapping much much harder! Hoping to make Mark June's academy in 2019, we will see though.

One beaver at a time, makes put up a little less time consuming

Son and I are getting about 1 every other day, 6 in the last 10 days. This is a nice pace to finish out our season

RM. wish we could still catch yotes here but our season is over and the last one was rubbed and the others I've seen still running are not looking good either

Amazing you have snow down there, we have none up here and it's getting warmer

Nice yote

Yea, its been a crazy winter, we have about 9" of snow now and 2 weeks ago it was 70 degrees. Im about 5,000 ft elevation but you drive 20 minutes and there is no snow and its 50 degrees. I couldn't believe how good the fur was on this one. I caught one Saturday that was eat up with lice. This is my second year trapping and I've caught27 coyotes but that's the first with lice and I've never caught one with mange

Thanks Gary, I had to release a big tom bobcat today, that's the only bad thing about trapping yotes after season closes on everything else

Our fur season ended yesterday, was a good time. Beaver and otter ended yesterday. Otter eluded us again, but we only set for the last two weeks for them

However ended beaver on a good note. Had two sets in a small drain off a swamp and both connected

So that's a wrap on the 2017-18 season

Wanted just a few beaver to make the wife a vest and needed a couple more for gifts next Christmas

Got 12 out of this small drainage in the last few weeks

It's ADC work now

By the toe. This guy had been working a dam and completely ignoring my sets with castor or food lure. So I kept moving the drowner set around the dam, and he kept repairing without hitting it. Till now

What part of Tennessee you from? I’m in N.C. bout an hour from Johnson City and we froze our hind ends off here in the later part of the winter. Frozen pipes, burnin thru fuel, couldn’t get diesel equipment started at work. Anyways nice pics neighbor

All cleaned, tuned, adjusted, waxed, hung outside under a lean-to to deodorize and ready for this coming season. Good luck fellow trappers.

So jealous! I always wanted to trap a badger! Still haven't got a trap on the pesky things!
