Earth Anchor Removal? - 01/22/18 08:30 PM
Ok, so let's say that it's the end of the season and it's time to pull traps. What do you all do with your earth anchors?
I dug out two super stakes today. Man, that wasn't easy.

When i did pull anchors a handy man jack made short work. Also my drill with a drill bit worked. But most of mine are staying in this year. Dont try to pull them when the ground is froze

A lot of mine are along edges of food plots and fields where I have tractor trails so I pull them with the front end loader bucket on the tractor in the spring.
While on the subject, I often wonder what most of your preferences are for attaching the trap chain to the earth anchors? I usually just use a j-hook on the last swivel but wondering how many use quick links or something else??

I use quick links. Have yet to have one fail.

Re: Earth Anchor Removal? - 01/22/18 09:48 PM
I too have been using quick links.
Unfortunately a tractor isn't an option for me.
As for the handyman jack, you're literally talking about a tractor jack?

This is what I am using. I built them so you can start your "pull" with the handle in a more vertical position. It has the hook as a 3rd point to pull from, but the bottom is slotted for chain or rebar.

Pull them with a puller

Rednecktrapper those look good and I like the design. One question tho. How thick is the tubing? I have one similar just with the angle iron on the bottom and mine has a nice sweep to the tubing from pulling hard stakes. I've been looking for one that has a longer handle on it cause a standard one hurts my back when they are in tight. I'll be looking on your site soon.

Don't drive them in so far if you are using fox hollow chain stakes I only drive mine in about a foot never lost a coyote just di down and they pop right out not much digging

Randy I did that this season with my dirt hole auger and they all popped rite out easy but I don't always have my drill and auger with me.

I've built them with both 1/8" wall and 3/16" wall. I imagine 1/8" wall will hold up well in a more loose soil, but guys in clay, or those trappers that are just plain hard on equipment maybe the 3/16" wall is better. The 3/16" wall does add some weight to the puller. I had built one of each wall thickness for myself, but just sent my 1/8" wall puller to a trapper on here to see if he could bend it up.

Thanks everyone. Redneck, if you have those at the PA convention, and I'm able to get there, I'll be picking one up.

Redneck, I have to go down to Harrisburg for some agency training for 2 to 3 weeks in the spring. Maybe I could get together with you sometime then and check out the goods.

I bought a stake puller from F&T at the NY convention . I can't find the catalog and can't remember what they call it but it has been one of the BEST trapping purchases i've ever made . Its got a big c shaped notched bottom with a braced metal bar coming off the bottom.I use chain superstakes and rebar . The notch fits the rebar very well and I put a 30 or 40 P nail through a link of the chain below the j hook , span the notch with the nail and pull back for the superstakes. If the ground is soft I carry a piece of scrap 5/4 PT decking to set the puller on so it doesn't sink into the ground . THIS THING WORKS ! No back strain . The only thing I would change is making the bar you pull on longer but its easy to slip a piece of pipe over it like a breaker bar to give a longer pull .

Re: Earth Anchor Removal? - 01/23/18 01:30 AM
Thinking about ditching the super stakes after this season. Puller wouldn't fit #2 chain, and I'm not in shape to dig them up anymore.
This is what I use. All my stakes are 10" cable/6" chain. Just dig down hook spike in cable loop and use mattock and handle to lever out. If in hard ground a few whacks with the spike then hook and pull.

I use a 4 wheel drive 4 wheeler and a short snatch rope they come out or bend .Except for if its still froze then I open the j hook and pull them later

I just gave a solid beating- or maybe I took a solid beating from the bulletproof puller that Rednecktrapper sent me. When I get my act together I will post some pictures. I could not bend the puller and I am positive that J-hooks and 3/32 cable and twist link chain (the kind that comes on a Victor #2) will break before the puller will bend. O and the frozen ground certainly doesn't help. But the puller certainly holds up its end of the bargain!

Maybe you are just "TOO STRONG", I think I saw you pop a "J" hook & a cable.

Jerry Jr. from the forums met me today and brought his puller. Man, they just popped right out. I'll never be without one again, that's for sure.
Now, to find the best one is the new task.

Mine are very hard to get into the shale that I trap on. I carry bolt cutters and just cut the "J" hook. Next time I want to set that location my stake is already there.

4 wheeler - winch - hook to cable loop on retrieval end of super stake - turn switch to "in" - done

What size chain hook are people using for #2 & 3 chain?? 1/4” hook looked too large to me

Lol^^
I use the bulldog stake puller, it paid for itself the first week. Can't imagine going without it.

TB1, the fastest and easiest way I’ve found to pull super stake earth anchors from unfrozen ground is with a DeWALT drill & a 1½" auger.
Drill down right next to the chain, then pull the anchor.
It only takes 6-8 seconds from start to finish; and you’re on to the next trap.
I haven’t picked up a puller since I tried this method for retrieving earth anchors.

Thanks Tejas, I like.that option. That auger can also be used for other purposes.
The chain doesn't wrap around the auger or anything?

You Betcha!
It’s a fine line staying close to the chain without catching it.
Extend the chain to one side and push on the trap with your foot to keep the chain tight while you drill.
If you happen to wrap it on the auger, just reverse the drill, then push the chain back to one side and keep it tight as you redrill the same hole. Apply pressure to the side of the hole opposite the chain to avoid wrapping again.
The less loose dirt left in the hole after drilling down, the easier it will be to pull the anchor.
Make sure that when you drive your anchors you drive them straight down, and not at an angle.
That way you can drill straight down the chain to the anchor for easy removal.
It takes a few times to get the hang of it, but once you do you can pull a line really fast.

For what few trap that I have moved around I have been marking my anchors with flagging tape to pull later once the ground thaws. I have a bar with a chain hook that I pull with.

I can pull a trap in less than a minute with a drill and auger bit. Heck with digging or prying.

Re: Earth Anchor Removal? - 02/07/21 01:18 AM
I use a 4ft piece of steel water pipe from lowes. Screw a T on it and a then a foot or shorter piece on each side. Weld a loop with a hook on it about 1/4 way down. Then put the hook through the chain and pull up. Some get stuck if the anchor catches a big root. Its heavy but works.

Mine are still there, quick link them up year to year.
Get about 3-4 years out of them.
Except in the hay ground, the swather's find them every year
