Mange anyone?

Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 01:48 AM

Curious how your percentage was for good pelts this year compared to previous years.
In my area last year it seemed we had pulled away from the major mange out from several years ago.
Back up again this year to 67% throw away.
I’m referring to coyotes myself but I would be interested to know how some of you fox trappers are faring.
Best to you all.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 02:05 AM

I would say 1/3 throw away. Probably should have pitched a few more questionable ones. A few years back we had a year with 1 good one to 11 bad, so this isn't so bad.

Couple years ago it was 50% percent here this year none. But did have some lice problem on some.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 02:56 AM

I only had 1 out of 18 with mange, skinned 14 cause i threw out noticably rubbed ones, shoulda been more selective but now i know what to look for now

25% last season. Less than 20% this season.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 03:20 AM

I've been trapping even after the shoulders are rubbed, but about 8 of the 29 had mange or lice. I only got 15 pelts out of the 29.
So 25% had skin issues

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 04:23 AM

Guess Im the lucky one here . I was complaining about losing 2 to eagles and 2 to mange out of 114 coyotes and 6 fox .. Im very happy with what I got

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 12:07 PM

Last year I caught 7 coyotes on our small farm and the neighbors, 4 were more or less bald from mange. This year 4 so far 3 in great shape one had a rub spot on a hip.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 12:43 PM

How can you tell if it is lice or mange or just rubbed????
Posted By: Ken Smith

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 03:10 PM

Rubbed hair the guard hairs is missing and the under fur looks like it's shedding or very short.

Mange looks like wounds on the body which causes patches of hair to be missing.

Lice usually is on the back right behind the neck and looks like the hair is falling out. Or in my case it has been.

I've seen someone on here cut the lice spot out and sew it back up and sell it as is.
Looked pretty good.

I threw out 8 of 22 coyotes for what I'm pretty sure is mange. All from the same square km too.

Yup we got it bad. Dont know how many ive thrown away this year. Theres a guy around here that ive been trading mangy yotes for traps.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/14/18 11:27 PM

No mange this year on either yotes or fox. 35% had white lice.. The typical rub over the shoulders. Shame

Possumcatcher if I understand you correctly, it sounds like you have made sweet lemonade from some bitter lemons.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/15/18 01:25 PM

Out of 10 reds 2 had mange . Out of 10 coyote 2 had mange 1 had lice. About normal here for the past 4 years.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/15/18 01:27 PM

I had to throw away 40% of my yotes for one reason or another

Yes I sure have. There is an old buyer around here that we take the mangy ones to. I keep my good yotes and finish them. But the bad ones go right to him and me and a friend get traps for them.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/16/18 02:12 PM

Good for you possum catcher.
For those of you with low mange catch:
Do you have a coyote population that is heavily trapped? Hunted? Hounded?
One member mentioned I may have possibly been subject to higher coyote density thus higher occurrence of mange.
Great point since I feel pressure in my area is minimal.
My solution might be to trap heavier. But who would want to do that?

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/16/18 06:25 PM

I don’t catch many with mange but do catch a few with a pink belly ( lice ) . I just talked to a buddy of mine that raises cattle and said something to him about injecting a mange or lice infected coyote with ivermectin and turning it loose. He told me that they have a new product out that you just poor on. Said it lasts a long time and is good for a number of issues ( bugs ) sounds like a half pint would do a hundred coyotes.

Is anyone using this treatment ?

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/16/18 06:35 PM

Can’t think of his name but a fella in ks was posting about treating and releasing sick ones. Maybe he will chime in.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/16/18 06:43 PM

If you released a coyote in my neighborhood and got caught by a landowner you would lose your trapping permission faster than a coyote could get out of sight. But I've heard of guys who catch for the live market cleaning them up with ivemectin

Small sample size, only caught 8 this year and 7 last year. No mange or lice on any of them. Really good fur.

Same % for us this year. My trapping partner this season had trapped texas 27 years in a row starting in the early 80's.
Said he never seen the mange this bad.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/17/18 03:18 PM

Does the lice die in the winter. I caugth a coon that ls belly looked like it had lice. But I didn't see any one it. When I fleshed it the belly was very thin skin.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/19/18 03:53 PM

Brokenboots, I didn’t mean to hijack your thread. I just don’t have that many coyote and their is more than I like to admit that get thrown out. Would not bother me in the least to treat and release!

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/19/18 05:31 PM

Here it is the worst I have ever seen 95% of the coyotes have mange this year. Pretty sad to see how bad it is.

Caught 45 coyotes this year. One had bad mange and I tossed 5 other ones that were rubbed so bad they weren't worth skinning and I kept a few that were marginal. The one with mange was the first one I ever caught around here that had It.

Zero percent this year.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/20/18 01:18 AM

So do you mean you caught no coyotes?
Posted By: 908shooter

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/20/18 02:25 AM

Caught 27 reds this year. 20 were perfectly prime. 1 mange 6 rubbed bad.

Re: Mange anyone? - 02/20/18 02:36 AM

No worries golf ball. I’m open to all discussion on the topic.
It’s frustrating at least to see some of these higher numbers.

Scott Phillips where are you located? I’m partly trapping in some of the sagey type country similar to the eastern plains and that is where my mange is the worst.
