Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 01:25 AM

I bought a dozen JR's to test last fall. Loved everything about them except the weight. IMO they are too heavy for a toe caught coyote. I only caught 6 or 8 coyotes with them. One was a two toe catch and it was waiting for me, but I don't think it was going to wait much longer.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 01:41 AM

I have some LT and really like them. They are made like tanks and will not bend or need any adjusting after a catch. I have inside outside lams on both 4 coiled and 2 coiled and very little foot damage. They are made to lock up tight and they def do that. I still like my jakes for when I cover with grass on flat sets but Kendall's traps will last a lifetime. They work great with wire screen as well

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 01:44 AM

I have a dozen of the extremes and a half dozen of the the jrs and they are my favorites. I have had the extremes for about 3 years and have had to tinker with them the least out of any trap I have ever used, and I have not had to dip them since getting them. Stoutest trap on the market, and very well designed with the pan level being below the bottom of the jaw level. I always have good deep pad catches in mine. They work great for me on coyotes and cats, which is mainly what I target. I do catch the occasional fox and the extremes are a bit too much for them and I do get foot damage on them. I have not caught a fox in the jrs yet so I cannot attest to how well the will work on them. They are pretty much an extreme in a smaller more compact setup with a little less weight. I have seen comments on the jrs of guys using a little wax on the trigger to get the pan tension below 2 lbs. A three pound hammer head sets mine off which is good for me. Great traps for me with a good set up ready to go right out of the box. I just have to put my drags on them and go set them.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 02:14 AM

I've got both the extremes and juniors, both stout traps. The extremes mud up in some soil types, lost one coyote but I think it was toe caught and it twisted out because of the 1/4 inch offset. Could be wrong. The extremes are a great snow trap and if we ever get a wolf season they would be great for midwest wolves. The Juniors fit my style better, 6 inch jaw spread is Ideal for yotes and occasional fox in my mind, but cant get the pan tension below 2.5 even when waxing the contact points. Our red fox here average 8 pounds so if I can't get 2 # pan tension I see tracks on my pans. Love the adjustable dogless design on both. Don't know how they would be on extended checks. Both paw freindly. All mine are 4 coiled and outside lams. The coating on my Extemes are wearing great but not with the Juniors, flaked off in a few spots. For straight coyotes the Juniors fit.. smile

I have an extreme and its a great trap but really heavy. Thats not a bad thing but if you have fox id advise against the extreme. I also have his dps and fheir great traps. My favorite actually. His traps are definately built like a tank and are great traps

Forgot to mention that I do have some jakes and they are neck and neck in my opinion with the extremes. It is tough to buy them a dozen at a time, hahaha, but they are a great trap as well.

I had one get ran over 3 or 4 times and I don't think it bent at all.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 03:08 AM

This is my second season with the extreams and they are the trap I use the most. The pan sets below the jaws, and has pleanty of pan tension for full pad catches with the pan flopping, the tension stays consistent. During foot guiding I set a dirt clod, a leaf with a little dirt on it to hold it in place, or a small pile of dirt on the hinge point of the pan to keep the critter stepping on the live part of the pan. These traps lock up strong! I had six NO-BS traps in one field and two NO-BS traps in another field along with one MB650 run over by cotton pickers and large tractors this season. Three had minimal frame bending, a couple strokes with a shop press and they are good as new. The 650 was toast. I also found the jaw bolts to be a little tight, so I loosened them one quarter of a turn and this freed the jaws up nicely. The first traps I ordered with out the coating. The second ones with the coating. I think the coating is a plus but you still need to wax to protect the inner surfaces of the springs, and the jaw and pan pivot points. My traps are four coiled, off set, and outside laminated. I almost forgot. I had one trap box bladed from the middle of a farm road, the j hook opened up and the tractor tumbled and shined my trap up nicely and then left in a pile of dirt. I put some new chain, swivles an super stake on it and was back in business. This is a quality trap!

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 12:54 PM

I really like them, 2 seasons with the Extremes and one season with the Jrs. When I buy new I will be getting more of the Jrs, however I keep finding deals on pre-owned Extremes so I am adding those right now. Running 4 doz last season I had one that came out of adjustment and needed to file the latch slightly but that was it as far as maintenance. The only complaint I have heard is the weight, however it does not bother me at all...............

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 01:06 PM

I have 5 dozen of the Jr’s and used them this year for fox and coyote. I ordered 5 dozen more for next year. I love them. They worked flawlessly for me. I sold all my Bridger 2’s, they don’t even compare to the quality of these traps.

I've used his beaver foot holds a good bit. I will be selling my 750's and Bridgers and buying more of the Beaver extremes.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 04:32 PM

I have the Extremes....I can't think of a negative about them other than they can sort of "stick" on lock up which can make them hard to get off a live market coyote which is what I do. They are also tough on grey fox but what trap is not? All of the other things above are accurate. I mean you can say they are expensive and I guess in comparison they are but when you hold one and get to looking at them I don't see they sell them for what they are priced. Very heavy frame, music wire springs, bolt spring pins and bolt jaw tips, huge low sitting dogless pan, laminated, painted and heavy chain and MB swivels. I may order some JRs next.

Beav, you are looking at the 1 1/2 size trap, not the Extreme or Extreme Jr. Kendall's website clearly shows that the Extremes are Made in the USA.

You can have them supply the steel certifications, we do with all steel & components....
All steels have a range of the different composition levels, tensile strength, and elongation, so even if they fall into the specs. they can still act somewhat different when you form them.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/23/18 09:29 PM

The DPs and the 1.5s are made overseas, I have a couple dozen of the DPs and they are better than my R-traps and Duke DPs. His 1.5 is top notch, the levers and pans are thicker than anyone else's and his prices are great on the traps themselves but the shipping sucks but that isn't Kendall's fault.

His Jr's and Extremes are American made. Kendall told me this at the convention last summer. I am presuming the beaver traps are too.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/27/18 04:03 PM

I've never used a Sterling or a Jake, but I don't see how you could improve on the K9-Extreme for strictly coyotes. Especially since Kendall will mod them exactly how you want them.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/27/18 07:46 PM

Not only did Kendall weld them, when I had one that seemed to be off a little, he offered to pay all the shipping and fix it for free. I bought them second hand and told him that, he still offered. I paid the shipping and bought a set of setters so he could ship the trap back, but he still fixed it for free. A bolt had bent I believe. It must have been run over previously, but he wanted to check his work. He is very nice and cares a lot about quality. I’ll buy more that are made in USA from him when the time comes. Stand up guy.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/28/18 02:19 PM

Even though they're made overseas (which I didn't know until this thread), the NO-BS 1.5 is the best on the market. In my opinion, the 1.5's are his "stand out" traps. They are the K9-EXTREME of the 1.5 world.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 02/28/18 02:22 PM

I have 2 dozen if the dj 11/2's. I went to using them for dirt holes for coon this year. I caught just short of 30 coon in them, plus fox, possum, skunks and a couple coyotes. Never had a sprung empty trap. Absolutely zero chewing on the coon. I will be getting more this year and run more dirt sets for coon.

A young fella I know in SD, is a beginning coyote trapper. Went to buy some 'yote traps locally, and all they had was the No BS 1-1/2's. So he bought a dozen. Been catching and holding coyotes... wink

Do you guys the extremes would work as a three species trap? Coyote, otter, and beaver? I'm thinking about retooling and would like to go with one trap. John

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 03/03/18 01:09 AM

I have a half dozen Extremes on the way. Will be my first experience with them. I will pass on my thoughts. However, I have communicated with Kendall, the creator/builder of the extremes, and he is a solid guy that cares about the integrity of each trap he builds. I don't think you could find that with any other traps besides possibly MJ's. Course Sterling doesn't build many these days or sell the ones he does within the US. So if you want American made with a human standing behind the product, No BS is the way to go.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 03/03/18 01:54 AM

I ordered 4 1/2 doz Jrs today. I got one bout 3 weeks ago and been looking at it, had Montana’s and the extreme jrs are 1/4” smaller but the pan sits below jaws and every part of the Jr is thicker and stronger. Kendall will build them how you want. I’m having 3 JC Connor swivels then 18” or chain and his earth anchor everything welded shut. Kendall spent bout 30min on phone with me today talking this trap and bout his screen and his extreme lure. (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) of a good guy.

Yes, and steel certs should certify whether it's domestic material. It'll be interesting to see what kind of impact those proposed US steel tariffs have on trap prices.

Re: Kendall Obermeier's traps - 03/04/18 01:59 AM

I have 6, K9 extremes that just came in the mail. From initial look, setting, and testing they are impressive. Heavy duty trap for sure. They have a nice crisp break on the night latch. Very fast too. The Extremes may be hard on Foxes, as they are heavily powered, but you can get smaller traps if you are targeting fox. I really like the long pan. You get an "over-sized" pan without over sized pan. I am not worried about to catches. I am most likely going to dump my MB 650's and switch over. The 650 pans drive me crazy.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But dosnt Kendall get the parts made in china. He just assembles and weld them here. I will say it's one the heaviest built traps I ever seen for yotes. I'm thinking about selling all my jakes, sterling's and mbs and going to nobs traps for all species.
